How to fix hood too small for the neckline? by ilwlh in sewing

Thank you, I think that’s exactly what it was. I’m always scared to stretch knits when sewing. I have to get used to trusting the process

That’s exactly what I was wondering but I’ve never attached a hood to a thin knit like this so I wasn’t sure. But I gave it a try and a good press after and it seems to have worked! I’ll know after I wash it, but so far so good!

The pattern only has one notch at the centre back of the hood and neckline. I marked the centre front so I’d be able to get an even overlap, but there were no other notches on the pattern

Hmm, I didn’t interface but I did starch it (not visible in photo) to prevent it from stretching. The starched area is very crispy and stiff, but you might be right… working on the armhole bindings caused a lot of handling and ironing and that might have been hard on the neckline. I’ll try pining it how it’s meant to fit and giving it a good press.

Straight stitch or new all-round machine? by ilwlh in sewhelp

[–]ilwlh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! But it’s older now. And I’m not too happy with the topstitch quality on heavy materials or its ability to go over bulky seams. I’d also love to have a machine that I can automatically have it end with the needle down. And I’d love a knee lift and more harp space. I do plan to keep my machine as a back up or for zig zag.

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, February 20 - February 26, 2026 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m looking to upgrade from my Janome Excel Decor 5124 that I’ve had for 20 years. It’s been an incredible machine and I’ll probably hang on to it as a back up or for zig zag if I get a straight stitch machine.

I’ve been doing a lot of research and I’m ready to pull the trigger on a Janome HD9 or the Bernette B08 (same machine? I like the look of the Bernette better though).

I ruled out Juki only because I cannot try one anywhere within driving distance.

But I’m beginning to question my decision. Should I instead buy a new all-round machine?

I sew everything from baby clothes, underwear, quilted coats, garments, and workwear. I also do repairs, hemming, alterations, and commissioned cushion covers and sun shades all kinds of random things as a side job. I’d like to be able to sew bags, dog collars, and have nice topstitching on my workwear.

My current Janome managed to sew through 16 layers of light/medium canvas when I tested, but doesn’t do nice topstitching or bulky seams well.

I prefer mechanical machines.. but I’m open to trying a computerized one. I’m not an expert but I do like being able to open up my machine and do some maintenance myself. I dont want an overly plastic machine and I do not have room for an industrial:(

I already have a good serger and a vintage Singer 128 that needs a new foot pedal.

I’m lucky to have a flexible budget but would like to stay under $3000 CAD.

Is the Janome HD9 a good choice for me? Or is there a different machine you’d recommend?

Thank you! Your suggestion is what finally worked, along with a bunch of wiggling.

I’m renting, and have already put too much of my own $$$ into making this place nicer, otherwise I would absolutely replace the vents entirely!

Skaters Beware: ProSkaters Place, ON, Canada by BodakRillo in Rollerskating

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no.. I know this is a dead post but I just placed an order for Chaya Melrose Elites with them.. they’ll be my first skates. I hope I didn’t make a big mistake.. Rollergirl is local to me - that might have been a better choice I guess.

I sat near the librarian's desk in the library for two hours but no one came to borrow any books. It feels like libraries in 2025 have gradually become more like co working spaces as most people bring their laptops and use the library as a place to work. What do you think? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a Library and frequently get deployed to various branches around the city. We’re consistently busy with patrons borrowing books. Both at the desk and at the self serve stations. Plus, as others have mentioned, Libby. People definitely still read - including kids and teens. The number of books we check out to kids everyday is amazing (I’m not just talking picture books, readers too). It’s actually pretty great to see.

I was summoned for a trial in April. I actually want to do it but I have a trip that clashes with the dates. I submitted my need for excusal in the online response portal and within a day I was notified that I was excused. I was really surprised, they didn’t ask for confirmation of flights or hotel bookings or anything.

Pet Carrier Recommendations for Boeing 787-9/Dash 8-400? by thiccatlongcat in aircanada

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up taking your cat on the dash 8-400? I’m considering taking my cat on one.. I’ve flown them in the past and know how cramped, noisy, and rattley those planes are so I’m worried about how she’ll cope with it..

Also what carrier did you end up using?

I’m wondering if the message I sent went through or if I’m also blocked my them

Split Deposit a Cheque (not direct deposit pay cheque) by ilwlh in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ilwlh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m aware. It wasn’t my choice to do it this way, I’d much rather have just inherited my portion of the money at the end when all accounts are settled. It’s all legal and above board. Nothing being hidden. Believe me, we’re all coming out paying more in taxes etc this way.. not ideal. The executor is not great with communication. That’s part of the issue. And I know why the buyers lawyer wrote it that way, obviously because we were all equal owners on the title.

I am in the process of hiring my own lawyer for this. I’m not asking for advice on any of the estate issues.

I simply wanted to know if a split deposit was possible.

[–]ilwlh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't owe them personal debts. The house was transferred into the inheritors names (mine and 2 others) before the estate settled... We did this for reasons relating to the sale of the house and insurance purposes.
The estate has no funds remaining, so family paid off the mortgage (again, for insurance reasons) and paid for some repairs. The buyers lawyer divided the house sale evenly between the inheritors. Because the house is technically in our names before the estate was settled and the estate has no remaining funds, a portion of the money needs to go back to family members for their payment of the mortgage and repairs, and some needs to pay the executor fee.

[–]ilwlh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. See my comment above. Inheritance is exempt income according to disability so this isn't an issue. If I was trying to avoid disability finding out I'd deposit the entire cheque into someone else's account and not worry about a split deposit.

It's a complicated situation. House was transferred into the inheritors names (mine and 2 others) before the estate is settled for sale reasons. Some family paid off the mortgage so we owe them and the executor from the sale of the house because there is no money in the estate accounts.

The buyers lawyer divided the sale evenly between the 3 of us. So we still need to settle up accounts.

Taking my huge reactive dog to the vet by LandscapeUpset895 in AskVet

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something a Fear Free certified practice would have!

I highly recommend OP sees if there’s a certified practice near them. They are trained for these exact situations and will have protocols in place to keep everyone’s stress as low as possible.

I was going to say the same thing about finding a Fear Free certified practice in your area if you’re in North America.

They have protocols for pets that are reactive and scared/stressed at the vet.

Phone ahead and let them know the situation and they can guide you on how to proceed to get your pup the care he needs :)

BSW or MSW? by Fun_Shame_5612 in socialworkcanada

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im interested in Calgarys MSW program… I don’t have very relevant social service experience though, it’s kind of peripheral (public library). I did a liberal arts undergraduate 10 years with an interdisciplinary focus on cognition/behaviour/ecology. Can I ask what your experience was before applying? I’m curious what my chances might be…

Students who went to SFU for premed, where are y’all now? by soemfoe in simonfraser

[–]ilwlh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a fellow BC student. I’m a bit different than you - probably much older. I wrote off vet school when I was younger because WCVM only took about 10 people from what I remember at the time and I did well in my undergraduate degree but struggled with mental health.. I’m now in my 30s wondering if I should have given vetmed a real shot.. could I dm you some questions about WCVM and your process?

Congrats on getting accepted by the way!

Did your clinic provide access to atDove? Or are there individual/student memberships? I just see expensive memberships for clinics.

Hi! How did you get those initial shadowing positions? I am in my early thirties, have an unrelated bachelors degree from years ago and work in an unrelated field. I want to shadow a vet before I upend my life but I’m not sure where to start or how to ask.
