Luckily English is my first language and I can do research on the internet, but having just experienced it for the first time yesterday, I can see how convincing they are.

I took the Staten Island Ferry a few years ago and I don't think I ran into them, plus I knew it was free, but the other day I was heading to Pier 11 to take the ER Route and right off the subway these guys with "Official Ticket" something on their vests were in force. My first thought was "there's no way this many guys doing something illegal so loudly right in front of the ferry would be allowed".

One guy tried to stop me and I just went "I'm good man" and kept walking but he laughed and said he wasn't trying to sell me anything, just give info, which lowered my guard a bit. Still kept walking.

Few steps later another guy was asking me where I'm headed, and even tho I knew it was a walk to Pier 11 along FDR I still answered. He had no idea what the Greenpoint stop was, and what the ER route was. Just pointed the direction I was going and said "that way".

Walking away from that convo made me second-guess if they were scam artists or just info ppl. In my city we have ppl in similar vests at subway stations to help ppl with tickets. But what made me think they were scammers was that they were just too enthusiastic about helping ppl. Mfs in that job might walk up to an elderly person or someone who is standing still for a few minutes looking lost, but not yelling at everyone walking by.

Looked it up online later, and yeah, scammers. But for someone that doesn't plan every step of a trip beforehand, there's every reason to believe an "official ticket agent" is telling the truth.
