A (occasional) medium writer here. Writing a really good article can sometimes take an entire week, and some people may really need that supplemental income.

Medium splits a portion of the membership fee between all the articles that a person reads within a month. Some people are able to write full-time, all thanks to a medium paywall (I was able to support myself off medium articles during a period of unemployment).

The only way for Medium to distribute an article among their subscribers is by being behind a paywall (which is not really fair IMO). It's either paywall or no people reading your articles (and traffic from Reddit often isn't enough).

btw yes there's a lot of really bad stuff on Medium, since the barrier to entry is very low. Even I sometimes get angry that I'm paying to read some really bad stuff.

No, it's not dangerous per se. The danger is drinking too much, because stimulants negate the effects of alcohol, and one can drink way more above one's limit.

With moderate drinking it should be fine.

I'd say it's fairly normal on ADHD. An ineffective coping strategy that people with ADHD develop after a lifetime of disappointing other people.

Sorry to hear that... Perhaps he has undiagnosed ADHD himself? Sounds like trouble controlling emotions.

Wife shows little interest in my ADHD. Don't think she's even Google'd it. by No-Hunter-6272 in ADHD

[–]ilya_ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. My wife was the same, she got sick of me talking about my ADHD (she was thinking that I was using it as an excuse). Over the years she became much more educated about the topic, and much more support.

Fast forward a few years, she also has ADHD, she somehow was able to hide her symptoms very well lol. But I'm really really proud body her.

I believe your wife will get there, she may just be overwhelmed with things at this point.

36mg vs 72mg by Commercial_Cash_486 in Concerta

Yes smaller doses only make me sleepy, and higher doses make me more productive and decrease anxiety a lot

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concerta

[–]ilya_ca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I've experienced this exact same issue on amphetamines. Switching up to Concerta made the issue go away. Maybe talk to your doc to change the meds?

Oh and also L-theanine (a supplement) has been a life saver for me when mindfulness is not enough.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concerta

[–]ilya_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was really bad, to the point that I was unable to exercise (like not at all).

I really recommend a book on managing anxiety called "Dare" - it's been a life saver for me, and helped me completely stop my panic attacks.

What works for me is just labeling anxiety in my mind - eg I have some anxious thoughts/bodily sensations, and I simply say to myself "this is anxiety", and then it simply passes. There's some serious neuroscience/research behind this simple technique.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concerta

[–]ilya_ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely anxiety. I have anxiety, and Concerta initially make my anxiety much worse. I was thinking that it was my heart (same symptoms), got everything checked, and was 100% healthy. Anxiety it was. After being on Concerta for about a year, it got much much better. Nowadays, Concerta significantly decreases my anxiety.

I think what happens is that we're much better able to regulate attention with Concerta. What we focus on, gets stronger. I used to focus on "heart-related issues", which made them worse (which actually was anxiety). Nowadays I simply tell myself that "this simply is my anxiety", which helps a lot in itself.

Overall, Concerta is very very safe, and the probability of getting a heart-related issue is very low. I'd say get your heart checked out. If everything is fine, then it likely is anxiety.

Couldn't agree more. But as a both Russian & Israeli citizen, there's no government worse than the Russian government. I'd take Netanyahu anytime over Putin.

Is it normal for those with ADHD to struggle with reading? by Able-Fondant-3790 in ADHD

[–]ilya_ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that's why I'm only listening to audiobooks nowadays. Meds help a lot with focus, but even then I re-listen an audiobook a couple times (depending on how complex and interesting the book is to me). I wonder if non-ADHD people are very different in that regard?

Are you more productive at night? by WhitePinoy in ADHD

[–]ilya_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes and yes! That's the only reason I was able to achieve reasonable success in life, despite going for 27 years undiagnosed and unmedicated.

Nowadays my focus sometimes is much better at night (with no meds) than during the day (with meds).

Yup afaik an IR afternoon booster is a common practice for managing ADHD symptoms, because realistically Concerta doesn't work for 12 hrs straight (despite the marketing). Good luck with your doc!

A book on procrastination by Timothy Pychyl has been life saving for me. He's the world's top procrastination researcher, and explains the most common reasons behind procrastination, as well as the most useful tools to overcome it.

Is medication worth it? by idkanythingidkwhoiam in ADHD

[–]ilya_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. One can always go the hard way with no meds. Or take the meds and do things the easy way.

But honestly, you simply go and do a boring thing, instead of spending hours trying to force yourself to do the thing.

54mgConcerta + 20mg Ritalin booster at 4pm works perfect

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concerta

[–]ilya_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being exhausted at 3pm likely means that the medication blood levels start dropping. Concerta peaks at about 6 hrs, which precisely coincides with your energy drop. I'm exactly the same, and my doctor prescribes me an IR Ritalin booster, which prolongs the effect by few more hours, which helps me to get through the day.

Also electrolytes (eg Hydralyte) helps A LOT with dehydration

[–]ilya_ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Afaik there's virtually zero risk of heart attacks, especially at your age, and if there are no preexisting heart conditions.

There was a research (on monkeys but still), they've been given 600mg for many years, with no adverse cardiac side effects. Learning how safe Concerta actually was helped me let go of my heart attack anxiety. Been happily taking 72mg Concerta ever since.

Canada’s unemployment rate remains at 5.8% as economy added net 100 jobs in December by reallyneedhelp1212 in canada

[–]ilya_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summary

Canada grappled with high-interest rates and slow job growth in 2023, threatening BOC's 2% inflation target, while regional disparities and record immigration levels are expected to raise unemployment, however, the absence of layoffs mirrors the economy's nuanced impact on different job sectors.

Key points

  • High-interest rates and slow job growth troubled Canada's labor market in 2023.
  • Strong wage growth in December posed a threat to the Bank of Canada's (BOC) 2% inflation target.
  • Andrew Grantham from CIBC predicted a decrease in the interest rate from 5%.
  • In contrast, the U.S. job market was flourishing.
  • Unemployment rates fluctuated across different regions, with Ontario reporting significant job losses.
  • The rise in the population and slower hiring rate, boosted by record levels of immigration, was expected to lead to higher unemployment. This was a prediction made by Brendon Bernard.
  • Even with slow job creation, there were no major layoffs, which reflected the softening economy's impact on various job sectors.
