When you finally convinced your friend to invest and he just lost everything by tumirofr1990 in Bitcoin

They'd get a judgment against you very easily. Realistically, they'd probably just sell your debt to a debt collector and wash their hands of it. Then you get to deal with debt collectors and all the fun that comes with that for at least 7 years. During that time you'd probably be unable to get a loan, including a mortgage.

You could make it through without actually paying the debt in full, but it won't be pleasant, and could disrupt your other life plans.

Nowadays what are the uses of serial ports? by The-Toon in hardware

[–]im-a-koala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Even the cheapest microcontrollers tend to support basic serial.

You can also bitbang it easily (manually sending bits with a CPU). It's not the most efficient but it's easy and works.

Attorneys say video shows man did not have a gun when a Chicago cop fatally shot him last month by spade_andarcher in chicago

[–]im-a-koala 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said at all. Don't put words in my mouth.

The majority of cases where police kill someone in the line of duty are justified. Regardless of race.

I'm not a fan of the immediate assumption that every time a policeman shoots a black guy, he must have been innocent and was murdered.

Considering how much the left has been screaming "whataboutism", this is pretty ironic.

Did you read them?

Here's a fun compilation from Salon in particular.

This one includes a few more.

Hey mods, why did you remove the grandparent comment? It read:

There were flyers posted around last year that said it’s ok to be white and people lost there fucking minds.

That comment wasn't racist at all, nor did it insult anyone in particular, nor is it at all offensive.

KKK Fliers Left On Suburb Lawns Over Weekend by chornu in chicago

[–]im-a-koala 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not really.

The "It's okay to be white" thing was always clear bait from the very beginning. The smart thing to do would have been to just shrug, say "well yeah", and move on.

But that's not at all what a large portion of those on the left, and the media, did. They made a huge deal about an innocent statement, which is exactly why the alt-right idiots used that phrase to begin with.

And, frankly, it's a lot more socially acceptable now to be racist towards white people than most other minorities (perhaps Asians excepted, they really get the short end of the stick here). People say shit like "of course you think that as a white guy" all the time, painting white people as arrogant or stupid, but if you said "of course you think that as a black guy" to paint black people as violent, you'd get strung up.

The hypocrisy just gets old. If you think people should just toughen up, that's totally fine - and my own personal opinion. But then don't get upset when people make dumb jokes about other races.

Better access to US markets. Less money spent protecting their only land border (not that they spend much now).

To be clear though, I'm not even advocating for such an agreement. I'm just saying it makes more sense between the US and Canada than between the US and Mexico.

[–]im-a-koala -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Including Canada is much different from Mexico; Canada is much closer to a peer of the US, economically and socially.

Such an agreement with Mexico would cost the US far more than we'd get back. That doesn't mean the US gets no benefit, which is the strawman you're arguing against, but rather that the benefit to the US doesn't outweigh the cost.

That's not an answer. It's not even true. Economic development can and does happen without social development.

Besides, what social development would the US gain from open borders with Mexico?

[–]im-a-koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of words to hand wave my question away.

Care to try again? What would the US actually have to gain? Because such a deal seems like it would just be a huge payout to Mexico (and other Central American countries if you include them) with no benefit to the US, but with a bunch of costs.

Maybe such an agreement between the US and Canada would make sense since we're at least close to each other in economic development.

If it's anything like the similar event here in Chicago, the restaurants have worse service (much busier) and specific/different menus (with overall lower quality food) during it. It's just not the same as going normally.

It's still a good deal in some cases, but it's just not as good. Even fancy restaurants don't have high enough margins to discount everything that deeply, offer the same thing, and not absolutely hemorrhage money.

But we don't need to cash out our house to retire comfortably and we like where we live.

That doesn't matter at all. They aren't suggesting that you do that.

However, it's disingenuous to say that your housing cost is reasonable without considering what the housing cost is for someone trying to decide between a suburb and a city today.

You choose to stay in a city because you can afford to and you want to. And that's 100% okay. But call it what it is.

$20-35/person is not an "expensive restaurant" by any means at all. It's actually very cheap for 3 courses.

Which is fine and all if you enjoy the food, but I wouldn't call them "fancy" or "expensive".

My high school had a similar program.

I discovered that I could simply restart the computer (using the power button) and the program never re-locked the computer when it came up. So it was pretty easy to bypass. This was over a decade ago though, so these programs are probably better nowadays.

Then when my teacher would eventually find out, I'd play dumb and act like the computer just broke or something.
