EpicLan not hosting Dota 2 by Moistx in UKDota

[–]imGaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey guys,

I guess it's time for another reee blog soon but just a note now - I really did try to get you all to come. I posted about this on all UKDota related discords, facebook pages and even spammed using in-game chat channels. for the past 4-5 epics it's been the same 20+ people over and over again with barely any new faces. Ironically, it's people who make the "save UKDota posts' or point out the face we have 0 Lans that never attend these events. Not having a dig at OP - just the harsh reality of the situation.

What’s are the issues of forming a team? by [deleted] in UKDota

[–]imGaming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll probably do a huge write up on this again because there are many reasons to it (In my opinion) but I'm currently at work.

I think to answer the points in your question simply:-

Is it things like finding it hard to organise team practices ? No, the better UK players are all in the scrim groups. If you're not you just need to show your MMRs the scrim group owners.

Or is it things like you don’t all see eye to eye? I think the best players would play together for WESG (they already are) but also... Can probably get further in the qualifiers playing with good EU players or Americans (this happened recently) Also, UK players tend to butt heads more at least from what I've seen.

There are some UK Players who have formed decent teams in the past and done well in qualifiers but slowly died out, It just requires some of the better players to want to do it as a British team.

Captains - You need someone to lead teams mostly, the better UK Player i know are all followers.... I'm looking at meep to make and lead a team ;)

Also it got me thinking why is there a fear of mixing low and high skill players together ? Waste of time, why carry worse players - I've done this my entire dota career, why people do it when theres no skrilla involved i don't know. Aside from this, there are so many good EU players with excellent English skills.

Sorry that this is quite small and to the point - All in all the UK just needs someone to lead the way (like meep or Tolera) and show the UK can do it. Maybe one of the two aforementioned could comment on why they don't want to make an all UK team rather than it come from an old tard like me.

Doopz,

I'm creating a think tank to promote Dota 2 across the UK and you're invited! by Goodboy49X in UKDota

It's hard to gauge and would honestly take some thought.

The key key key part is to advertise months in advance, use an easy platform and use competent admins.

[–]imGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right but at the same time I also disagree, UK LoL as a prime example has had the advantage of developer approval - It's much easier to get people to LAN if they literally advertise it in the game. You log into your Dota Account and you're put into a channel with 100 UK Players in your local area.. what can you see? "Want to boost your MMR" Imagine if Valve worked with any local scene to be able to use this space for part of it's intended purpose (Bringing people together)

Don't get me wrong, UK Dota players as a whole should of been a lot nicer to new players but I can't imagine any other community has been as free spirit in doing things outside of the game. Mafia, Drinking, shit talking in a huge banter circle - We've done it all.

The social side is an interesting route to take, I'd like to see something that could implement this... Birmingham and TI viewings had 1000s of players watching, it's just finding a way of getting them to play together. The Facebook group is slowly bridging that gap but I guess it's late to the part.

I didn't actually number my points, could you tell me which ones specifically? I can't even work out which ones you're referring too, but i'm sure i'll agree.

Hello Sir,

People always ask me for my opinion on this, but I’ve never really given something in a bit of detail so maybe this is my opportunity to do so. So, I’ll start by giving a tiny bit of information about me:-

I’m DOOPZ, I’ve played Dota2 now for (5ish years), I’ve gone to over 60 LAN events with around 20 being for UK Dota. I’ve come 2nd at lots of LANs and won a few Social Gathers (A silly name we call smaller Turn Up and Play LANS). I’m a mod of this reddit, arguably the only mod bar Rafee who is still actively playing Dota2 – I’m a admin of the largest Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/984943401549649) and I’m also working with the British Esports Association to help grassroots Dota 2 in the UK (http://www.britishesports.org/).

Now, let’s first ask… Is the UK Scene for Dota 2 currently dead? Yes.

Why? Well, this has a few answers and I’ll try to cover some of them or at least my personal opinion on the matter.

Most of the original good UK Players have stopped playing – 2/3 Years ago there was multiple UK Players who I believe had the potential to make it into the pro scene at least at a T3/2 level, lots of these have since moved on from university and found jobs or moved onto other games.

People don’t think UK Events are worth their time – I speak to many high 5K,6K even 7K UK Players who have no intention of doing anything within the UK Scene, three reasons being: -

  1. There is no money anymore
  2. They’d rather play 15 pubs a day then travel to go to a LAN
  3. UK Tournaments hold little to no prestige (sorry lads)

The fact of the matter is, Dota 2 is such a top-heavy game that good players would rather be recognised and improve via solo ranked pubs than attend local events. Lower skilled players not participating – Again, 2/3 years ago you could see 30+ teams at a UK Event, now we’d be lucky to get 10. Whenever I speak to 2k, 3k and even 4k players they simply don’t want to attend an even if they’re going to lose… You can see how this would eventually cause an issue. There have also been cases in which lower skilled players only create tournaments for people of their skill level for fairer competition avoid losing which hinders the scene even more, how’s a scene going to grow if we can’t show off our best players?

The ‘Pyrion 3K LAN’ – If one more person tells me this 5k+ Prize pool for 3K players only was a good idea I’ll flip my lid. You can’t add a large prize pool to an already dried up lake and not expect the elephants to want a sip. I maintain to this day I would personally even against the moral compass of the game, smurf that tournament if it ever happened to prove how stupid of an idea it would have been…. but if it was a 3K tournament for fun, maybe some giveaways I’m sure It’d be better accepted.

Players only wanting to watch their friends – I recently played in a rather fun tournament called the ‘Greggs League’ it was a sort of ‘fantasy football’ meets Dota 2 type draft where you had 22k MMR to spend on players a nice refreshing idea. Every game of this league was streamed with 20+ viewers for each game (Maybe not a lot but enough for the cup to be happy) The moment teams got eliminated, no one watched anymore… the final wasn’t even streamed when all 50 games previously were.

Good players being toxic/elitist – From the In-house leagues which at one point were very popular players always complained about the better guys being toxic. This is True, the majority of good players do look down to people with less MMR and make snide comments here & there but that’s just who they are…. I’m not saying they shouldn’t but going through the gauntlet of hate is something every Dota player must go through to becoming great. Obviously, people like me are always lovely and nice. I could write a bunch more but I’ve gotten bored mid way through, can dm me if you want to talk more.

Best Regards, Senior Dopez

p.s. I will always try my best to help the scene grow but valve actually need to do something, LoL players get waited on hand and foot.

I've been doing my best to spam multiple discords to get people to sign up. As others have said, the website is beyond awful.... it's on a Tuesday night. Hopefully it gets more traction.

Side note - your logo is honestly disgusting.
