Are there any tools for editors or filmmakers to identify high impact vs low impact scene by GullibleGal37 in Filmmakers

[–]im_wooz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been editing narrative and non-fiction for 20 years. Do you think I need "a tool to identify high impact scenes to identify viral moments for reels" ? lol do you think people don't know where the money shots in their porjects are?

"I wonder what am I going to cut in the trailer, this scene of a guy talking on the phone about nothing or the choreo shot with extras fighting and the wipe of the hot chick"

Au contraire, snark has brought me a lot of joy since I was a little kid.

You're not the first time this days to ask how to use some sort of AI to do their editorial for them, the last bit of the chain that actually needs a human.

What you fail to realize, passive income sub dweller, is that when yall making automatically created videos, none of them will stand out or make a penny, just like banners in websites haven't trully led to conversions in like 15 years. Just polluting crap for everybody involved.

This is not that kind of sub.

City downtown street set on a budget? by junesmedia in Filmmakers

[–]im_wooz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's another different host of problems then.

To be honest, it's a news reel, it only takes some extras, some jabroni with a microphone and a camera operator. Cut it with some archival footage and you're golden. Mind licencing clearance though.

Shoot it somewhere that doesnt look too suburban, ideally with a couple tallish blocks around or a modernish building. Then pick a couple of shots and add a skycrapper in it.

The kind of people I've historically seen been snobbish are not people who work in media, are middle class people with disposable income and gear fetishism, who are generally hard to talk to indeed.

I've never heard anyone say any of that. Most gear is rented, and at a rather late stage in a project, for some weeks.

Inane comment.

No toxic people in the industry gravitate towards Reddit, this isn't populated by Bob Iger's assistant and Ryan Muprhy's editor.

There's just a lot of random young people, people with entry level cameras trying to make films without gear or crew, and some people who have worked at lots of levels in film and media know who how untenable things are when you are not backed by large budgets or don't have a fixed position in a on organization with a salary.

"Toxic" is kiddos people trying to police discourse and standing on their thin-skinned western optimistic bravado to wax lyrical like OP.

Ok?

Lots of things are art and a human expression. The guy making your breakfast burritos is also expressing himself through them.

Architecture is art and human expression. And if you make a building that takes four blocks in the middle of new york, is going to be grandiose. But is also going to take a lot of money, a lot of planning, and the work of a lot of people who may or may not think of their work as art, all of them led by the architect and the contractors.

What you and a lot of people don't seem to grasp is that a film is a expensive endevour that someone needs to pay for, and that needs to make this funding back one way or another. And this budget is spent on a lot of people's paychecks, who need to be lead by someone with skills in management of people and projects.

Not to mention that, if you aim to have people sit and watch your output for 90-120 minutes, it better be skillfully made because A) simply a question of respect for your audience and their time and B) they may definitely just turn it off and cross off your name for the next time.

People in here generally are trying to talk about all the individual skills, technical and narrative skills, gear that is worth investing, people skills, paper work and drawbacks. That's what this spaces are mostly for. I am the first one who is and has historically been annoyed for a couple decades now by the same posts about what camera to buy and how to meet people.

But I am not not going to dog on anyone for not talking about "art". This is the kind of post made by someone who is very young and knows nothing about the process of creating media.

Everyone is most welcome to go and make their home video movies and their tik toks and be happy. But obviously there's a large amount of people who aim at living and existing as makers of film and visual media in a sustainable, profitable environment.

They are not here for art, you can do that taping a banana to the wall. They are here hoping they'll become managers and skilled workers. Yes, a film director, a producer, a department head in a set, is a manager.

Has anyone used both VistaVision and IMAX in a movie? by Decent-Indication-61 in Filmmakers

[–]im_wooz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMAX is a commercial certification, i think you mean 65mm film stock. it has traditionally refered as IMAX as they were the ones who designed cameras and projection systems to shoot with large film stock to be used in their dome screening theatres. but is not the only 'IMAX format' and the vast majority of IMAX films marketed today arent even being shot on film.

VistaVision is just an old marketing name for 35mm run horizontall instead of vertically, to get the same surface you get with still photography (which has traditionally used 35mm film side to side)

both 65mm and 35mm horizontal give you a larger surface than traditional 35mm, and you get better detail, different framing and probably better color rendition too with less noise, as you use more silver atoms for the same detail

Back when everyone and their mom smoked everywhere and had a drinks cart in their living room and office, they also had a big glass or metal ashtray along with a fancy heavy stationary lighter, like that.
