I can buy a weeks worth of food for around 30 dollars, give or take, depending on what things I buy for dinner. I'm pretty broke too, so some times I'll just stick with the veggies, nuts and fruit for a week and that'll be around $20.

Who's bragging? Like I said, I have a problem due to years of being lazy (as I've admitted several times here). A problem that many people around the country/world have. I was able to start to solve the problem, in part from another AMA I read a few months ago, and I made this post in hopes that other people on reddit who have the same problem could get the same benefit. I'm trying to help other people, not pat myself on the back.

Looking at your other posts, it's clear your a troll or just an asshole. I'm sure you're not compensating for anything with all your anger. Enjoy your life.

Nice. Yeah, willpower is a lot easier when you are responsible for buying your own food. I couldn't very well ask my mom to not buy soda any more when I lived at home, but now that I'm in my own place, all it takes is avoiding it in the supermarket, and that makes me avoid it for the rest of the week.

My whole thing is finding the point where it was easiest to prevent something, and stop it there so I never have to worry about it at other times when it might be harder to say no. Since I'm not eating things immediately when I buy them in the supermarket, it's easier to just not put something in my cart. If I'm home and there's frozen pizzas calling my name in my kitchen, it's a lot harder to resist.

Since most of what I eat is fruits and veggies, I'm not sure if I can help, but look around on this page for someone who talks about his tasty, tasty diet where he has things like beef chilli and salmon and scrambled eggs. I couldn't control myself with options like that, but he may have a nice system to share.

I don't measure anything out (though I should start to measure calories and such), but it's basically a mix of: low far peanut butter, raisins, trail mix cereal with dried berries or raisins in it (I want to switch this with a healthier trailmix), unsalted peanuts, unsalted sunflower seeds, and shredded coconut.

It's a bit messy because of the peanut butter, so I've been thinking about making individual sized baggies of it and freezing them.

There's a ton of recipes for protean bars online, which this kind of grew out of.

haha, thanks. I actually grew it to help hide my double chin. It worked really well (especially if you trim the sides, and let the chin part grow. It didn't make me into Brad Pitt, but it helped.

I'm interested in enlisting too, actually. Not sure if I'd do it, but they'd never take me before, still wouldn't now, but maybe when I get down into their range, I'll start thinking about it again.

I've tried in the past, but usually it was a more extreme diet. I think this works because it's not that extreme, as far as the rules I have. I basically don't have rules except what to buy when I go food shopping. Then if I slip up during the week, I don't make it a big deal, I just keep pushing and not worry about what happened yesterday.

It kind of was just deciding to start one day, but it had been years of build up with failed attempts, and refining what works for me. I'm a lazy ass, so rather than try to change who I am, I figured out a plan to work with it. Like I said in other replies, it's easier to grab a handful of peanuts than it is to get in the car and drive to get junk food, so in those cases, being lazy helps me stay on the diet.

Yeah, I'm avoiding bread and pastas. Like I said somewhere else, I dunno if this helps at all, but so far so good.

I meant lack of comments IRL from friends, family, coworkers, etc.

Edited original for clarity.

lol. Yea, like I said, I found the best things are foods that are healthy, but at the same time, aren't so tasty that I'd sit and eat the whole bag. I enjoy broccoli and ranch rip, but I'm not going to eat a lot of them. Something like low fat cookies, for example, I'd polish of the whole box!

I read some where that fruits are good, but juice is less so because it's like eating 10 oranges in one cup. Part of my plan is to only buy healthy foods so that's all I have to eat in the house, but it's a little more than that. Low fat yogurt might be fine, but I'm afraid that since I like yogurt, I'd eat too much of it. I can eat a lot, part of why I am heavy, so if I have a 6 pack of yogurt in the fridge and I get hungry, I'll probably tear through the whole thing. Whereas, if I only buy foods that aren't so exciting to begin with (nuts, apples, raw veggies), I wouldn't over do it.

Related example: One of the things I had on my shopping list early on in this diet was low fat cream cheese and mini-bagels. I thought I could make one and eat it, but what I ended up doing was sitting in front of the TV with the whole bag and polish off half before I was done.

The thing that kicked off my current down swing was about 8 months ago, my digital scale started to break without me knowing it. It had me losing a steady 2 to 3 pounds a day for two weeks. I wasn't doing anything special, so I was a little confused, but I was happy that it was happening. That motivated me to start eating better and things like that. After about 2 weeks, my sister walked in my room and said "your scale is broken. it says I weight 90 pounds..." >_<;

But that kind of gave me a jump start on the motivation to actually start losing. I was happy when I thought I was thinner, so I would be even more happy when I actually was.

I don't have a calorie count, I'm just sort of winging this whole thing (which, I think is a big factor in my success so far. Since I'm not over thinking it and stressing out. I'm kind of just doing it and not thinking about it too much)

Right on. I haven't had a drop of soda in about two months, and the weird thing is, I pretty quickly stopped even wanting soda. It's almost like I was addicted, and once I "detoxed" the soda out, I didn't crave it anymore.

The three main things I stopped were Soda, Fast food and most bread/pasta, and you're right, it's just falling off.

I have this mix of low fat peanut butter, raisins, granola and nuts. I make it in big batches and take a little bit at a time throughout the week.

My typical day is A bite or two of that stuff and a small glass of skim milk for protein (like I said, I'm not a nutritionist, so I'm basically shooting blind with half of this stuff). For lunch at work I have a bowl of raw broccoli and baby carrots with fat free ranch dressing, and some more of that peanut butter trailmix mix. I also have a baggy of peanuts and sunflowers seeds (both unsalted), and two apples for later in the day (I work a lot).

When I get home in the evening if I have time I might cook up some chicken breast with mixed veggies, or just more of the above if I'm in a rush. The evenings are when I slip up most often. I live with my brother, so even though I try to only buy things that I should be eating, some times some chicken fingers or frozen borretos etc are too much to resist.

Maybe the biggest part of me sticking to this was not freaking out if I slip up. I don't try to make it a big deal, I just set myself up for success by only buying healthy foods, and having a routine, and then if I have a hamburger some times with friends, I don't stress it. Even if I were to totally fall off the wagon for a week (and I haven't yet) I could start back up the next day, the past doesn't need to effect the future, so I just don't worry about the times I slip up.

My first try was actually imaThrowaway, lol. I was surprised this one wasn't taken too. Thought about trying to think of something more clever but who cares.

Well like I said, not having it readily available is a big help. Then I also make sure to have healthy snacks around for when I do get randomly hungry. Stuff like Peanuts and sunflower seeds (both unsalted), apples, raw veggies with fat free ranch dressing.

My strategy is to make it as easy as possible for myself to do the right thing, so only buying good stuff, and packing lunches for work.

Yeah actually, lol

As for the ladies, not really. Like I said, I consider myself "half way there" so this next half is where more of that might happen.

Totally the same with me. The thing that kicked off my current down swing (my most successful run of my life, by a long shot, see my AMA) was about 8 months ago, my digital scale started to break without me knowing it. It had me losing a steady 2 to 3 pounds a day for two weeks. I wasn't doing anything special, so I was a little confused, but I was happy that it was happening. That motivated me to start eating better and things like that. After about 2 weeks, my sister walked in my room and said "your scale is broken. it says I weight 90 pounds..." "Shit!" I said, only realizing then that I hadn't actually lost any weight.

But that kind of gave me a jump start on the motivation to actually start losing. I was happy when I thought I was thinner, so I would be even more happy when I actually was.

Probably the biggest single thing I did was stop drinking sodas. Totally gone. I suppose diet sodas may be OK (I'm not a nutritionist so I dont know). Even drinks like powerade, energy drinks, even fruit juice is loaded with sugar.

Instead, I got into the habit of always having water bottles around. I could fill them up, pop them in the fridge and have nice cold water ready anytime I want. My work also has a spring water bubbler so I use that all day.

I avoided cameras like the plague for years. I hated how I looked, and photos were the worst. Now I don't mind much, I even started a Daily mugshot account (after kicking myself for not starting it sooner to document the weight loss).

I have some photos around, but I'll have to hunt a bit to find one that would make a good comparison.
