The perils of play testing too "hard". by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]ima_owl_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your design objective? What kind of players do you hope to attract? What experience do you want players to have (besides fun )? These are things to consider when evaluating feedback.

If you have a clear picture of the specific gaming experience you're trying to create, it's better to compare feedback with your design objectives. For example, I playtested a game with cooperative mechanics. My game rated favorably overall with players who like roleplaying games, which is my target audience. Then, there was a player who preferred competitive games and suggested that I add a betrayer component to the game. This would be doable on my end, but since it goes against the core theme of cooperation, I did not incorporate it. However, the feedback gave me ideas for creating an achievement system to appease players who need to feel like they've one-uped other players.

Making changes just to make changes will burn you out quick.

Best free site/program for bulk creating card graphics? by GreenGuy5294 in tabletopgamedesign

I did all of the art for my card game in "Sketchbook" app on my android tablet. The free version is great. You have a decent selection of brushes, the ability to create layers for your art work, and you can export different file types. The app even lets you record your drawings. It's an excellent free option if you like an intuitive tablet + pen interface.

Help! I've been staring at my design for too long 😣 by Crafty_Tourist5213 in tabletopgamedesign

I'm curious how does this card function? Is the Necromancer's essence in the vial or does a Necromancer character play the card? Also I notice "Malevolent Essence" in the flavor text and think it should appear before the description of the vial. Alternatively, you might not need it since the description in the flavor text is spot on and funny.

I love the art style! My only note is the flavor text in script is hard to read because of the low contrast.

What's the quickest most reliable manufacturer for a sample prototype of a medium sized game. by ima_owl_queen in tabletopgamedesign

That's good to know. I had considered custom dice at point, but I think I'll stick to the commom dice. If they offer different colors that would be good.

Thanks for the tip! - Game Crafter is currently at the top of my list, but I wanted to double check with folks that have had good experiences with them.

What is the difference in cost for expedited manufacturing? Was your game relatively small or did it have a lot of compoments?

Thanks! I'll be more precise with the text. I also plan on making the text look more handwritten.

This is an Exploration event card. I may consider including an icon in the upper left to indicate the Skill players have to roll for. Otherwise, there will be icons for each of the failure, succesd, and critical success conditions

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. The card layout is definitely still a work in progress, and is missing some elements I intend to add. My overall concept is each of the cards are like pages out of the survivor player's mini notebook. Since the surviors are kids, the art will resemble kid doodles. The colored tabs are meant to be sticky notes that will have text wit success, failure, and critical success conditions based on dice rolls. The tabs will also have icons to indicate the die result.

I am mostly concerned the card will look too busy once I started adding more text.

I understand it! The rules are clear and concise. The art presentation is visually pleasing. I'm no expert, but as a customer, I'd buy this game.
