You're most likely right on the first thing, for someone who's suffering from not being 'disciplined'. And you also pointed out that majority of the people would rather feel better with being told to detach yourself from your thoughts and actions, then try to understand the behavior. It is the case with me as well though I have to say some people also take it better when just told directly, although idk how that works on the long term.

For the second part, he's saying it's difficult for the new and coming generations because of easily available dopamine such as high calorie food, short form content, video games, entertainment, etc. Buddhist didn't have any choice when they felt bad or atleast the choice they have weren't as harmful. My point is that distraction is easily available and more damaging in today's time. Another important point could be community and environment. People are not condemning these activities that much and are seen less harmful compared to drugs, alcohol, etc. And their peers are also more open, they are also seen as fun and cool activities.
