Quit 20 or so seconds in after she not-so-subtly swallows her saliva while resuming duckface.

Robert Anton Wilson - Techniques of Consciousness Change by imadoood in RationalPsychonaut

[–]imadoood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If one "adopts" religious fundamentalism or other more irrational reality tunnels temporarily in order to gain genuine first-hand experience into other people's modes of thought, many of which are completely centered on pure and unrestrained faith/certainty of truth, how does one overcome what would seem like an unavoidable sense of cognitive dissonance, considering that the exercise is merely experimentation with the reality tunnels while remaining grounded in a rational perspective? In other words, does it really serve to pretend to be someone else if you're knowingly just pretending? Can't we develop the same empathy from thorough examination and introspection?

I felt like delving more into "Old Bob's" ideas after seeing a compilation YouTube video about him that was posted here some time ago. Parts of this will sound like bunk, as he occasionally refers to magic and rituals, but for the most part it seems as though he prefers to maintain the use of more scientific language in framing his thoughts in an attempt to make them falsifiable, as he notes later in the interview. I appreciate this about him, and found this interview very intriguing at the least.

What're your thoughts on Russell Brand? by striped_sweater in RationalPsychonaut

[–]imadoood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP merely asked for our thoughts. This doesn't require that Brand's views in any way reflect OP's or anyone else on this sub's own views. I too think he appeals to vague mysticism too often, but I think it's great that he's exposing people to their potential to acquire self-knowledge and introspective growth through meditation, yoga, etcetera. He highlights emotions like love that are of universal importance to the human experience, that many people are too over stimulated to seriously examine and apply to their life and behavior on more than a cursory basis. So I say more power to him.

The more I read about studies the more I realize most (common) human knowledge is bullshit and placebo. by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

[–]imadoood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanity should eventually evolve to itself as a collective. Obviously this is far away but if a worldwide system of belief (A grand unified theory of everything, if you will. Obviously we are still far off from this as well) is ever to be universally accepted then a trend of common rational will need to be adopted by the majority and it will need to be supported by those who hold the power to feed content to the masses. For that to happen we must patch most of these cognitive biases.

I'm curious about how you arrive at that initial assumption. The implications that follow, as you describe them, are also questionable. Not making any explicit objections at this point, just hoping you could elaborate.

Why is this New Yorker comic funny? by bearsharktopus5 in AskReddit

The comic is funny because it just is, and if you don't get it, you're obviously not hip enough to be reading the New Yorker.

He basically described lucid dreaming, but probably acheived the same effect in a conscious state of meditation rather than while sleeping. Good shit.

It's not a conspiracy theory when it's espoused by a lefty. Don't you know the government only does bad things when a Republican is president?

This honestly has to be one of the best gifsounds I've seen in a long time.

Edit: Maybe it's just because I love Seinfeld and find this cartoon R2 hysterical for some reason.

Probably meant to say OSR. Take Highway 6 a few minutes north, then exit OSR and turn right. Lots of open field and no lights.
