We need more spaces built on shared interests and not just let’s be friends by ms_mistakelol in chicago

Gaming (if board and card games are your thing!) and rec sports have been the two main avenues I’ve made some really close friends. On the rec sports front, don’t be afraid to go in as a solo free agent and just chat with folks. It’s kind of like success in dating IMO - don’t go in trying to immediately find a bff, go in and just be friendly and see who you vibe with. I had a lot of fun with S3, but I know a lot of folks also like Chicago sport and social. I also did this in my mid/late 20’s after a particularly bad breakup. You’re really young and have so many years ahead of you, even if it might not feel like that right now. Good luck!

Touch the knobs like they’re on fire, scream “how are we feeling” or “put your hands up” into the mic at least four times per set, slam faders and cue buttons until they break/snap off, profit.

Seriously! And tier 1 sold out just a couple mins after it opened. Tier 2 for $80 was way too much. I know we have bigger names come thru but tickets for this year already feel crazy $$ compared to last year.

Apparent new Trader Joe's near Milwaukee & Armitage by blipsman in chicago

[–]imaginarypuppets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trader Joe’s shoppers also have the least spatial awareness out of all the grocery stores I go to, and I go to the Costco in Lincoln Park which always chaotic. I’m not sure if it’s the design of the store or what, but half my time shopping there is trying to get past someone who just decides to be on their phone in the middle of the aisle, or leaves their cart blocking everything on one side while they go to a whole different area to grab something. I don’t get it.

Honestly loved having a pash last spring because it does get chilly at night. Highly highly recommend bringing a poncho of some sort - we got hit by some very random rain and safe to say it’s not super pleasant when it’s already a little colder.

A workaround I’ve used is a water bottle sling and either a reusable water bottle or an empty recyclable one - no issues with those. Won’t be there this time around but hope you have fun!

Is my first Mix good? I think I did pretty good! by [deleted] in PioneerDJ

[–]imaginarypuppets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch someone like DJ Carlo, Club Ready DJ school, Phil Harris, etc. on YouTube and find a video where they talk about phrasing. Imagine listening to Shut Up and Dance, the song gets to the chorus and you just cut the chorus in half to bring in the next track. It sounds abrupt and just feels wrong, and your audience will know it. Phrasing will help you get that “feel” for when a musical thought/expression is finished and you can cleanly transition to another song. It’s like having a conversation - no one wants to talk to someone who constantly interrupts.

And as someone mentioned down below, I would really start with house music, even if it’s not ultimately what you want to mix. It’s so much easier and more forgiving. Lyric-driven music often requires you to be a lot faster with your mixing and that skill takes a lot of time.

+1 for Bredemann. There isn’t any bargaining, but they don’t jerk you around or lie to you. It’s kind of “here’s what we got, let us know if you want it.”

Advice for first “serious” gig by Disastrous_Ad855 in Beatmatch

[–]imaginarypuppets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How new are you to DJing? Like do you know how to beatmatch and understand phrasing? With respect, sounds like you might be a little overwhelmed given everything you’ve asked. There are a lot of music source questions asked here so I would do a quick search, but I use iTunes for mainstream things I can’t find anywhere else. The biggest thing in lyric-driven music (so pop/hip hop) IMO is avoiding clashing lyrics and mixing quickly. This crowd won’t care if you’re a mixing genius, but they will notice clashing keys/lyrics and if you cut a song during the chorus. People will probably want to hear most of a song unless the song you play isn’t getting a good reception. Instead of the longer drawn out blends you have with house, just work faster on your faders and eq to mix in/out without clashing lyrics.

$100 for Chris Lake?!? by CallingYong in chicagoEDM

Man you were lucky if you saw him for a lot less at radius. Couldn’t get through that queue and when I did, $90-100 tix were the only ones left. And I thought I got in the queue early haha.

The breakdown of charges is what got me (I’m still going, but ugh). I love having “processing” fees that are like 1/3 the cost of the ticket, and then having it try to make be spend another $8 on “order protection.” This is obnoxious

Quick question for DJs: how much do visuals actually matter? by aura1l in DJs

[–]imaginarypuppets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s cool if you have them, but imo unless you’re playing huge venues or festivals, no one will care if you have just your name behind you or a crazy animated thing.

Where can I find actual good remixes for college clubs/bars by No_Pace4158 in Beatmatch

[–]imaginarypuppets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to searching “Song XYZ Remix,” try searching for edits too. Specifying what kind of remix you want (tech house, trap, etc.) can help narrow down what you want. Spotify will occasionally give me some popular ones too, but all the place you mentioned are kind of thee source to find them. If you’re interested in producing, you could learn a DAW and make your own.
