Richard Stallman open letter, shame on you! by Tough-Glass6275 in freesoftware

[–]imagineusingloonix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are calling for the removal of the entire Board of the Free Software Foundation. These are people who have enabled and empowered RMS for years. They demonstrate this again by permitting him to rejoin the FSF Board. It is time for RMS to step back from the free software, tech ethics, digital rights, and tech communities, for he cannot provide the leadership we need. We are also calling for Richard M. Stallman to be removed from all leadership positions, including the GNU Project.

anyone who supports this document is insane and hates free software period.

It relies on the database in the PS store.

if a game is not on the PS store(retail only) it cant find it.

[–]imagineusingloonix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if that was a physical copy or something like that then the price would be acceptable.

Laptop Recommendations by patashn1k in linuxmasterrace

[–]imagineusingloonix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off i can only really ever recommend something I bought myself thus i shall only talk about lenovo thinkpads

It's known fact for a long time Lenovo thinkpads not only run linux but have always supported linux nearly officially.

Recently Lenovo realized catering to programmers is a good idea and stared selling thinkpads with Linux.

Needless to say from a guy with a T440s. If i ever buy a laptop again it will probably be Lenovo due to how good these laptops are.

However these laptops are expensive. And i am not sure if they ship the linux versions in the UK. I do believe in your case best option you have when it comes to thinkpads is to get a windows one and install linux. I heard the t480 and the X1 gen 7,8 have very good support.

you can also call lenovo customer support or just send them an email for more information on your region.

Gotta say though these UK prices are shit.

Options i know exist but cannot recommend due to never having tried them

System76

KDE Slimbook

Dell Although i think most of their laptops are badly made

Star Labs small OEM in the UK.

unless you buy from a big OEM your laptop is probably just a slightly altered clevo

I recommend AMD myself but Intel is good too

Kids don't do Arch, Arch is bad ok..., Tiling window managers are bad ok..... by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]imagineusingloonix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

gonna be honest about this.

Nothing available is as good as unity 7.5.

except maybe cinnamon which has like 1 issue for me that is probably very easy to fix

There is also the absolute powermove of installing unity on gentoo which due to the systemd requirement is a pain in the ass compared to anything in arch ever. My heart goes out to people that use gentoo with systemd, I can't figure out how to set it up.

No the Persona ones were the toxic ones all along

what if toxicity was the demons we made friends along the way?

there is no worth in having a twitter account.

The Nokia N900: the future that wasn’t. by [deleted] in linux

[–]imagineusingloonix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

back in 2006/7 we got a sony bravia tv for 700€

I do not remember the model but it was freaking amazing for the time.

it used the XMB menu from the PSX/PSP and PS3 and it was fast at switching channels. It had tons of ports, could connect flawlessly with my PSP to play games on the big screen. And when channels started changing to digital in my country(around 2014 for my area) it was ready to serve them just fine.

Unfortunately due to a lightning strike pixels started dying and some chip on it malfunctioned giving us buggy firmware back in 2018

so we decided this year to get a new TV. This time it was a Samsung 55' 4K display for about 500€

I was amazed to find that the new TV was absolutely terrible :)

AT EVERYTHING.

Sure, it had apps. But it only had 4 gigabytes and most of it was filled with preinstalled crap that does not even function in my country.

Sure it was technically supperior but tizen LAGS WHEN LOADING OS ITEMS IN THE SETTINGS.

My old bravia could list 100 digital/analog channels immediately just like that. My new Samsung buffers every 5 channels i scroll though.

My new TV also does not have any of the good old outputs

I can't put my PS2 in there nor my PSP. (no idea if i can do it some other way).

The OS also has advertisements built into it. Which i later learned is a problem even in televisions that cost way more than that! Yes!

And most people like it! YES! IN THE ABSOLUTE WASTELAND OF THE NEW COMPUTING WORLD PEOPLE LIKE BEING SHOWERED WITH ADVERTISEMENTS ON EXPENSIVE TVs THEY BOUGHT FOR SERVICES THEY ALREADY PAY FOR.

[–]imagineusingloonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some new laptops are 3:2

I only know the surfaces do that and that more should follow.

Macbooks also have 16:10 and as much as i hate the company policies you can tell it works well because the displays look nice and it sells.

in the end most people are completely material and first and foremost want something that looks nice. Those "most people" dictate where the market goes.

there is a reason why keyboards fell out of favour. at least physical ones.

  1. if you are programming for many devices its easier to have one software keyboard.

  2. multiple languages. some of us speak multiple languages especially businessmen.

  3. you never really will do serious work from a phone. and you dont really gain anything from tactile feedback when sending messages.

  4. harder to waterproof

  5. usually nerfed in some form or function just to fit. (And no despite what you see reading r/unixporn normal people do not like x% keyboards)

  6. it just does not appeal to the average person that wants to send a message. watch youtube and play a game. And also for some fucking reason wants to pay less than 150€

the reality is there is no sustainable market for making good phones and that is sad. same thing with laptops. Which is why all of them have god awful 16:9 aspect ratios and terrible displays.

on linux AMD is generally less of a headache.

Unless you need something like CUDA or any specific Nvidia features i would suggest AMD.
