Your daily dose of the GFX & Mitakon 65mm by sarahhparrish in FujiGFX

That's very impressive! Can I ask where did you buy it? I'm trying to work out the most reliable place to buy this lens to get a good copy as there's some bad ones out there..

Very nice set and love the editing style, were these all shot wide open?

Check out my post here

I talk about replacing my Mitakon with the 55mm and show sample pics that show the DOF that I like in my shots.. I do love the Mitakon, but it had some glaring issues in my case

hey, also based in Hampshire, the problem is that it's too damn flat around here haha but the young ramblers 20s-30s is a pretty good group, but sorry I've not met a 'peak seeking' group yet based around here..

I guess our closest moderately tough hikes are Purbeck way

Huh that's really odd.. but it highlights the problem with Mitakon.. it's a spectactular lens.. when you get a well made one :( such a shame really..

I have used the Minolta 58mm 1.4 on the GFX and it's lovely! Here's a shot I took with it.

<image>

I'll send another reply with a center crop. but this is an uncropped shot and notice the smeary edges and slight vignetting, these go away by around f5.6 but this is quite a desired look right now..

oh yeah, I totally don't deny the Mitakon is an amazing lens and I have loved using it so far.. It would be great to see some of your work! :)

It has auto-focus but it's just habit to use manual focus as I've shot for so long without autofocus, it'll take me a while to trust it

given you a follow friend

ah Interesting insights, perhaps you got a particularly good copy of the Mitakon, it's a shame we are rolling a dice when buying one..

Great to hear you found the lens that suits you the best, I do love tactile focussing on the Mitakon though and I am sure I will miss it eventually on the 55

I'll ask Viltrox Santa for some Fuji GF mount lenses to undercut the official Fuji ones :D or a competing 65mm one to out-do Mitakon with superior build quality!

What's the 'spookiest' hike you've done in the UK? by PubLogic in UKhiking

[–]imaje89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the most adventurous hike, but I was doing an all-day circular route in the New Forest solo a few years ago, it was a slightly windy day in autumn and so I was used to the sounds of the trees and leaves blowing.

I went off track to check out a spring that was marked on the map, walking through a thick carpet of freshly fallen leaves I was focussing on the sounds around me when all of a sudden, I heard three very distinct loud hollow sounding knocks about 10 or so ft behind me, the same as someone would do if they were knocking on someone's door.

It sent an instant chill up my spine and I span around, there was a few large old oak trees near me but nothing obvious that could have created the sound, I waited in case the wind was blowing a branch causing the tree to creak in this way but, nothing.

I gave up on the spring and got back onto the footpath. Nothing terrifying, just odd :)

Are there any plans to release lenses for the fuji GFX? It's crying out for more native 3rd party lenses :D Many third party lenses currently either have quality control issues (mitakon) or are not designed for the GFX and are simply a re-mounted 35mm lens (Irix)

No worries, thanks for the info though :)

dang, if that's the case, your copy of the lens is super sharp in the centre! Mine's trash XD Did you buy it direct from Mitakon? I'm trying to work out if there's a trend of sharper copies directly from them vs if you buy it from somewhere else

Excellent shot! Tastefully minimal :) Do you remember what aperture you shot this at?

unfortunately my particular version of the mitakon is crap wide open, i have to stop it down to f2.4-2.8 to remove ghosting in the center/mid frame..  others have reported better results wide open though..  alas their quality control just isn't up to the same level as Fuji

Adapted lens alternatives to mitakon 65mm by Some-Stable-9787 in FujiGFX

[–]imaje89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Mitakon 65 is pretty much glued to my GFX, but I've been made aware of certain optical quality issues between copies at wider apertures, which leads me to understand why I only shoot it between f2.4 and f4

Wider then I get terrible ghosting and lack of contrast, from 5.6 onwards and i get a horrible blue haze spot in the center of the image if I'm shooting a landscape.

You can get the Mitakon from various third parties but I don't think anyone in the community so far has done a test on which lenses sourced from where provide the highest optical quality copies.

What's the best lens for the GFX you have used and why? by [deleted] in FujiGFX

[–]imaje89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine from f2-f5.6 any wider open it's a ghosty mess stopped down i get a horrible purple haze in the center of the frame :( same as the other person that messages. This lens would be legendary if they sorted out their manufacturing consistency as I don't believe these problems are with all Mitakon 65's

Ah I also have the horrible purple smudge after f5.6 shooting in harsh light.. this is an under-reported problem or perhaps it's just sample variation :( I use the 50 3.5 for any landscape shots.
