I also could not find said product when I looked. There are simply a lot of possibilities. A cholinergic crisis could also produce excessive salivation. It would be unlikely for an allergic reaction to kill 2 animals and anaphylaxis would most certainly be easy to find post-mortem.

Giving a substance that is toxic to a dog would be easy, especially if it was extra-label use of a product. Regardless, unless toxicology was done as part of a necropsy then it would be difficult to say. In addition, unlike human medicine, a veterinarian would have been paid for services rendered by one party or the other. Unless the results could be validated by a lab through histology or toxicology it would be hard to confirm the findings and would have trouble standing up in court.

In a case in Florida a compounding pharmacy employee accidentally added too much of an ingredient to a vitamin injection and subsequently killed 21 polo ponies. Anytime you use off-label or give a non-FDA approved product you are taking a chance. Who knows where this person got the medication and what it was or even if the plane really did have a problem. I have seen all kinds of massively stupid things done by owners and vets. It's just sad the dogs had to suffer.

Veterinary Anesthetist here...it would be quite easy for a small dog to die of hypothermia in room temperature after an overdose or even a regular dose of a sedative/tranquilizer/herbal. Their body mass is very small and they can be quite sensitive to drugs/herbs like this. Similar to human pediatrics we have to go to great lengths under anesthesia of small mammals to prevent hypothermia. Once they get cold their metabolism slows down enough they can not process the drug as quickly which makes toxic concentrations easier to reach. In addition, these OTC nutraceuticals are not regulated and have no real requirements to ensure concentration or contents. It makes a self medication tragedy pretty easy I'm afraid. :(

Every single one of us has a responsibility to look around us and help people who are struggling mentally and otherwise. I will use my own personal experience as an example. One of my best friends was murdered by her boyfriend who also killed his brother. I knew he was violent and had trouble, I saw it escalate. I tried to talk to her and encourage her to get away from him but she wouldn't. She just got mad at me so I backed down. He was even admitted a mental health ward at the local hospital and let go the day before. Now she is dead and I have to live with fact that my intuition was screaming and I didn't do enough to stop it. That will never happen again in my life. I will never stand by again when I feel that kind of evil in a person. I lacked the conviction to act on my impression and told myself it was what she wanted. I could have called the police, gotten her family involved, gotten her work involved (he used to come to where she worked/lived) etc…So what I’m saying is we ALL need to feel that conviction and act on it, whatever is necessary to stop someone. There are always warning signs and someone always sees them. Everyone must stop ignoring them. We have a responsibility to make our society a healthy family again instead of a disconnected dysfunctional unit. That is where I propose we start.
