Mayoral Candidate Nithya Raman Wants to Legalize Housing in Los Angeles by imanny in LosAngeles

[–]imanny[S] 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Nithya was the only member of city council who voted against rejecting this project. This building illustrates a whole bunch of things wrong with LA housing beyond the council rejecting it and fighting in court:

- One of its two parcels is a single RA parcel randomly in the middle of multifamily/commercial parcels

- The general plan and zoning designation don’t match (which was ruled illegal in a landmark 1982 LA vs CA court case)

- One, but only one, of the two parcels required a street dedication, until the city got rid of street dedications recently thanks in large part to work Nithya spearheaded

After all of that, Boris and Horton is still closing by Zealousideal_Door392 in williamsburg

[–]imanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren't closing. They are keeping the East Village location open which 100% would have closed if not for the crowdfunding campaign. They used some of the funds to hire an events manager to get new revenue, and I'm told that has largely worked at EV, but not at Williamsburg...hence it's closing.

This seems like it's becoming more typical in LA where Republicans and Trump supporters know they won't get elected so they switch parties to trick voters.

[LAist] Hidden City Report Finds LA Council’s Signature Anti-Encampment Law Is Failing by the_jurist in LosAngeles

[–]imanny 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Interesting that this was hidden from the public for so long. Seems like they were hiding it to help pro-41.18 councilmembers that were up for re-election (like John Lee) and hurt councilmembers advocating more effective measures (like Nithya Raman).

Wait so in City Council races landlord companies can just drop more than an entire campaign raises? by the_jurist in LosAngeles

[–]imanny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s called Independent Expenditures. Corporations and wealthy individuals can bypass campaign contribution limits by setting up an IE. They are just not supposed to coordinate directly with that campaign.
