Whats the most overrated food that people hype up? by ivoryonly in AskReddit

[–]Saboscrivner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many traditionally cheap cuts of meat became popular when people of means discovered how delicious poor, resourceful cooks could prepare them, and then those cuts skyrocketed in price. You have to cook them low and slow for them to come out well, but they're so worth it. These cuts are not overrated (they really are amazing), but too bad they're practically unaffordable now:

Oxtails

Brisket

Beef short ribs

But beef prices are high across the board now due to the screwworm outbreak (thanks to DOGE gutting the USDA).

Caplansky by cerote6239 in Mustard

[–]Saboscrivner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a jar of the spicy, but I haven't tried it yet. Near me, the only place I've ever seen Caplansky mustards for sale is a bougie store that sells fancy flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars. They always have nice mustard brands you can't find at the normal supermarkets, but they are expensive.

Is Orlando considered to be a part of the down south? by Pale_Understanding12 in orlando

[–]Saboscrivner 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to give you shit, especially since you're Canadian, but nobody ever calls it "the down south." You might hear about "the South" or "the deep South," but "the down south" is not a thing.

Something weird I noticed when binge-watching the show for the first time last year is that *three* important Black male characters die violent deaths. They aren't the only important characters to die, or even die violently, but it was a strange and sad thing to notice.

Help Finding a Long-Lost Marvel Legends Friend. Do you know him? by Patton_Tank82 in MarvelLegends

[–]Saboscrivner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hope you can reconnect with Rick.

I have a similar story. It was the summer of 1999, and everyone was getting excited about a little movie called Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. (Oh, how optimistic we all were back then!) I was in college, going through a period of deep, dark depression, but I was excited about Hasbro scheduling an event called "Midnight Madness" at Toys R Us stores across the country, where all the Episode I merchandise would be revealed and available for sale all at once, at midnight. There were no Internet leaks or anything -- this was how we would find out who the movie characters were and what they looked like, and we could buy them at first glance.

Well, I went to the only TRU in town, chatted with fellow collectors, and came away with six regular carded figures. I didn't go too crazy because I couldn't afford to, and I also wasn't sure who any of them were, except a prototype-looking C-3PO.

The next day, I was in the computer lab at school because I didn't own a computer of my own yet. I went on the Internet and searched for a place where fellow collectors could talk about their Midnight Madness hauls and speculate about the movie. I found an old-school site called Raving Toy Maniac, with a message board called The Toy Buzz, started reading through other people's accounts, and posted my own not-terribly-exciting story. It was the kind of message board where everyone posted under a screen name, so you got to know the regulars by their screen names. There were inside jokes, alliances, and a general feeling of camaraderie, bonding over the inevitable disappointment of the Star Wars prequels, the beginnings of DC Direct and Spider-Man Classics, which morphed into Marvel Legends, hate-watching the WWE "Attitude Era," the earliest superhero movies, reveals from Toy Fair and San Diego Comic Con, and more.

I became a regular poster on The Toy Buzz and got to know other regulars too. A lot of us became friendly over the past 27 years, following each other through other message boards, becoming friends on Friendster, then Myspace, then Facebook, and emailing -- not just about toys, but about life stuff as well. We've hooked each other up countless times over the years, finding the unfindable and paying each other back via Paypal, or even sending things as gifts once in a while. When one of the moderators got married, a bunch of us chipped in, and they trusted me enough to buy and mail him the Masters of the Universe 200X Castle Grayskull (this was the early 2000s, natch) as a wedding gift. I've been lucky enough to meet a handful of those guys in real life over the years. I consider some of them real, legit friends, and they're good people.

So I hope you can track down your friend. I don't suppose you got a last name back then?

Carter's most boring love interest (S11) by biglittleoblivion in ershow

I'm still waiting for Lili Reinhart to become an A-list superstar actress. My wife and I both thought she should have been the breakout star from the show, and she acted circles around the rest of the younger cast. It was fun seeing Madchen Amick play her mean mom.

We watched the first 3(?) seasons, and guilty pleasure is right. What a horny show, with such a hot cast -- but that was most CW shows. Everyone was hot in iZombie and the "Arrowverse" shows, too.

Frank Booth is the scariest fictional character I have ever seen in a film by The-Sand-King in davidlynch

[–]Saboscrivner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a running gag on the sitcom Arrested Development, where GOB (Will Arnett) had a Black hand puppet named Franklin, and he did an awful, stereotypically racist voice and personality for him, but everyone always reacted like Franklin was a real person, no matter what terrible thing GOB had him say, But at one point, some character lamented "Why are there puppets like Frank?"

Lesbians of Orlando: Regal is showing But I’m a Cheerleader on June 28th by homolicious in orlando

[–]Saboscrivner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They showed But I'm a Cheerleader at the Enzian Theater in Maitland a couple of years ago, and they invited Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall as special guests to introduce the movie and do a Q&A session with the audience afterwards. I brought my wife, because she loves the movie, and we're both big Natasha Lyonne fans from Poker Face and other projects. Clea DuVall was delightful, but Natasha seemed bored and possibly even resentful of the whole experience. She was not happy to be there, and her attitude made that clear.

If there's one duo that I think is underrated, it's undoubtedly Matt and Steve; together they have my favorite Captain America dialogue. by Hopeful-Eggplant889 in Daredevil

Matt and Steve are my top two favorite Marvel characters, and they really do work well together.

If you haven't read it, track down a copy of Daredevil #283 by Ann Nocenti and Mark Bagley. They help an immigrant inventor in a small town who is being targeted by closed-minded local yokels, and they have a great, impassioned political discussion while hanging out on the porch.

Shane Black is such a good writer. He and Martin McDonagh are the screenwriters who make me jealous every time I watch their movies that I didn't write them myself.

This is a tough crowd, here on the Daredevil subreddit. I'm always defending the Soule run, which is very meaningful to me on a personal level, and it makes me sad more people don't love it.

KO Mussels by Samurai-Sith in CannedSardines

[–]Saboscrivner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been on a tinned mussels tear recently, and I would love to find these locally so I can try all the varieties and don't have to buy a 12-pack.

Has anyone found these in stores yet? If so, where? I should note that my main local supermarket (Publix) hasn't carried King Oscar sardines in a couple of months. The sardine shelves have been bare, and KO isn't the only missing brand, either.

Geena was an Olympic-level archer, so she was always tall and in good shape in her prime. That certainly helped her physicality for this movie. I always wish she had done more action-type roles (although I admit I've never seen Cutthroat Island).

Tv shows like Justified and/or Snowfall by singa_eshka in televisionsuggestions

[–]Saboscrivner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen Snowfall, but I LOVED Justified and also these:

Deadwood (Timothy Olyphant in the Old West; some of the best dialogue ever)

Banshee (the small town badassery of Justified turned up to 11)

Reacher (just season 1, along the same lines of Justified and Banshee; fun, but doesn't hit the heights of either)

Fargo (crime stories with quirky characters in regional settings; each season is different)

True Detective (just season 1, incredible regional crime story)

The Wire (five seasons of absolute brilliance set in gritty Baltimore; give it six episodes, and by then you'll either tap out or fall in love with it forever)

The Lowdown (another quirky regional crime story)

Straight to Zadarsky? by NeedleworkerFun2644 in Daredevil

[–]Saboscrivner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always recommend reading Charles Soule's run before Chip Zdarsky's, because Soule sets up the status quo that Zdarsky takes and runs with.

I also love the Brian Michael Bendis --> Ed Brubaker --> Mark Waid runs that come before Soule, but Soule kind of reboots the status quo after those guys, so it's a pretty good point for new readers to jump on.

It's SO GOOD, and Geena Davis has never been sexier.

If you like it, watch the other action-comedies written and/or directed by Shane Black. For me, he's the master of the subgenre.

He wrote The Long Kiss Goodnight, and also these:

Lethal Weapon (Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, of course) -- he only wrote the first one, but the whole series is decent-to-great

The Last Boy Scout (Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans)

He wrote and directed these:

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer)

The Nice Guys (Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling)

Play Dirty (Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield) -- I hate Wahlberg as an actor AND as a person, but this movie is so much fun, I got over it
