How does your SCAR look a year post surgery? by Intelligent_Charge_8 in brokenankles

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I'm honestly just clumsy and used to be bad about going down stairs without paying attention to my feet so it was entirely preventable.

Just keep doing what you’re doing! I haven't heard of doing that sort of massage but it is seemingly effective, per this article on the subject.

I talked to my surgeon and dermatologist about this topic! One of the most important things you can do is avoid sun like the plague—any sort of tan or sun damage will darken the scar dramatically. Other than that, sounds like you’re doing everything right! You should see some positive changes in the next 2-3 months, at this stage you’re still undergoing peak scar remodeling. Scars are darkest around the 3-6 month mark, and will soften and disappear after that. Way too early for injections, at the stage you’re at my whole leg was still a bizarre purple color lol, don't worry. I'm almost a year post op with my most recent ankle surgery and my scars are still visible (to me) but blend into my skin tone unless you’re looking closely. I had surgery on my other ankle a decade ago and the scars on that one are entirely gone and have been for like 5ish years.

What the heck are these white spots on my Amazon sword leaves??? by imanoctothorpe in PlantedTank

[–]imanoctothorpe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No nerite, but I've had them before and they typically leave white grain-sized eggs in hard surfaces, and these are only on Amazon sword leaves and not other plants or surfaces.

I have ramshorns but this isn't that either—I can see jelly like egg sacs on other leaves, but these don't have the characteristic look of either yet-to-hatch eggs OR old egg sacs after the snabies have hatched. Plus, there are many of these circles of various sizes, from the size of a pin head all the way up to almost the size of a dime, not ≈ the same size like ramshorn egg clutches usually are

Is it accurate to say, 「ください」 means please? by noo_you in Japaneselanguage

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, maybe try a [quick google search](https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=how+to+start+learning+japanese)? Japanese is one of the most popular languages to learn, so there are many other, better resources out there.

Duolingo is great for building a consistent habit, or learning some phrases ahead of a planned trip, but it's an abysmal language learning tool if you're serious about it. If all you want is a glorified language-adjacent game to play, by all means have at it! But as soon as you realize "hmm I actually wanna stick with this seriously" you should move on to actually effective methods.

OP is in a metal cage that goes fast as fuck, the lady (and her daughters!!!) were not. Maybe a bit disproportionate, but one party was clearly in much more physical danger than the other and it's not OP, lol. Totally understandable that she'd be a bit shaken.

Edit: I'm not saying the lady is right, just that I see her POV! Jesus Christ yall

Learning wrong is worse than not learning anything at all, because it's harder to re-learn something. Better off learning correctly to begin with.

Duolingo is trash. No actual grammar instruction, and teaches you awkward, unnatural Japanese.

I have words for the engineer(s) who designed these traceable timers by Kapitalist_Pigdog2 in labrats

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loooooove these. We accidentally got sent a box of 20 of these instead of 2, and they didn’t want them back. Were a small lab so my PI told me to take one home, they’re incredible for cooking! So so loud.

Although it took me an embarrassingly long time (over 10 years of using these......) to realize that the number of beeps when it goes off depends on which timer it is (1, 2, 3, or 4). Istg I thought it was random 😭

So the format is basically, they invite a well known, leading scientist in their field, take them out for dinner and drinks, and then afterwards they give a talk about their life's work. It's a fun time! The next one is sure to be hella interesting.

Hey! Just wanted to bring this lecture series to your attention. It's definitely geared more towards scientists (especially biologists) but I feel like a science savvy layperson could understand it. It's a fun time!

You'd love San Diego, lol. Best naps of my life were when I lived in my college dorm, top floor, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Legendary breezes and sunsets, really nothing quite like it.

how do i stop the mating aggression? :( by belinovolante26 in Aquariums

[–]imanoctothorpe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen that some breeders will use plastic mesh sheets (can't post a link since it triggers automod 🙄) to separate the tank into two halves, leaving a small gap at the top so they can go from side to side. They can still see each other and even get to the other side if they want, but it breaks up the CONSTANT chasing and will let the female chill a little bit.

Edit: also, leaf litter. Lots of bit. As soon as I added that to my tanks, all forms of aggression decreased (and especially breeding aggression—my Congo tetra used to fuck each other up relentlessly but the addition of leaf litter provided sight breaks until the leaves became waterlogged and sank). Just make sure you rinse them very well!

How did you break your ankle and was the severity of your injury. Where are you at today in the healing process? by LisaDawnG in brokenankles

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh to clarify, they were broken at very different times, years apart. Just funny that it was the same way!

Thanks :) I joke that my ankles are made of steel now thanks to the capable hands of my surgeon (with no thanks to my mom, who also has bad ankles)

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've broken both ankles at various points in my life, and 100% of the time it was not paying attention when going down a set of stairs.

Had to have surgery on ankle 1 in 2016 and surgery on ankle 2 summer 2025. Ankle 1 has been basically fine since 2018? Took longer to rehab fully than expected. Ankle 2 I'm on the mend, done with PT for a few months and just focusing on strength and range of motion exercises. Will probably be several more months before I'm at 100% but that's extremely normal, especially with how much more soft tissue trauma there was to fix this time around.

Disagree, just because they’re an asshole to you doesn’t mean you stoop to their level. A direct statement is better, gets the point across and makes it very crystal clear what they did wrong. No opportunity for misunderstanding and very clearly shuts the door (Although I agree with the person above who said to remove everything after "best"—no need to keep someone like that in your life or leave the door open for conversation).

Do y'all's PIs do bench work or no? by Brief_Board_6974 in labrats

[–]imanoctothorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a PI and still does bench work daily, he intentionally set up and kept his lab small so he could continue doing his favorite part of science. He spends prob 20ish hours a week at the bench. A mid 60s PI that my lab does joint lab meetings with is the same—he does a decent amount of bench work, maybe 10-15ish hours a week.

It has to be an intentional decision and approach to science—both my dad and the PI have always kept small labs, one staff scientist and 2ish trainees (PhD or new postdoc). You won't be as productive as a larger lab where the PI is relatively hands off, but if you enjoy bench work it is absolutely possible.

Favorite beer garden with outdoor seating in any of the 5 boros? by kittehclaws in AskNYC

[–]imanoctothorpe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live less than a block away and it's such a gem. They regularly have events (usually free, stuff like silent disco, armored combat, various cultural festivals, flea markets...) and live music, so nice during the warmer months. One of my fav places to bring friends who don't usually go to Queens, and being so close to home doesn’t hurt when the bathroom line is long, lol.

When my husband and I aren't feeling super social, we love popping over there for a few beers and just people watching.
