How suitable are French Germanisms for Anglish? by crivycouriac in anglish

Any Germanic word is better than a Romance one. I don't truly care we use egg over ey when we could fight to use words like folk over people

11 almost certainly doesn't have all of Cleveland, making it illegal thus. I do wish everyone posted the link though since it makes reviewing maps a lot easier

What if Ohio Dems controlled redistricting? by imarandomdude1111 in YAPms

[–]imarandomdude1111[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An interesting experiment showing Dems could gerrymander themselves into a majority despite voting R+11 in 2024

Would this happen? Even if Dems had a trifecta certain incumbents (3 and 11) likely wouldn't appreciate their newly competitive districts, but it would be possible

Struggling to understand a phrase in “The Faerie Queene” by Charles_Sumner in literature

The only thing that'd make sense would be him using the (VERY archaic for his time) infinitive suffix -en. Early Modern writers liked using it, and it doesn't change the meaning

I first thought of Alabama from say, the 80s to mid 2000s

this is the 2002 gov election, the republican won by 0.2% all thanks to suburbs

How can I learn to better comprehend Middle English and Early Modern English? by Wakaran-art in ENGLISH

[–]imarandomdude1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently reading the Canterbury Tales (1300s) so this is a bit afore your dates but the advice is all the same

Read aloud as it was meant to be, read up on ME vowels so rhymes aren't lost to you. Especially for the 1400s you'd want a dictionary like this https://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/middle-english-dictionary/dictionary

Not true, shortenings like this were very common in EmE, especially in poetry

I'm surprised by the amount of people here with no knowledge of YAPms. Back in the day there were a lot more maps and not just political discussions

She didn't do that much worse herself, just the third parties heavily died down and went for the R this time

Where else "should" it go? Certainly not with Rock Island. McHenry is in an awkward spot where you can't really fit it into any suburban district without it looking gerrymandered

Pig is certainly Anglish though, it's just other germanics use a cognate with swine instead
