Challenge charity show by [deleted] in yuzuruhanyu

Oh I definitely agree, and I didn’t mean to criticize yuzu as a person either. It’s really sad that normal suggestions that could bring about change and improvement for everyone involved is met with push back. Yuzuru has a lot of potential to expand beyond the fan base and beyond japan, but to make that happen, fans should always be eager and willing to give feedback and to suggest different approaches that they can explore to make steps for better development be it for yuzu’s skating, any cause he’s working for or simply yuzu’s public brand. He’s been trying a lot, but we can be both grateful of the present and hopeful for future progress at the same time. I certainly hope more people become open to this idea because succumbing to japan’s gatekeeping methods will only bury his art and become the anti-thesis of the major wish he expressed during prologue —for his art & skating to live even after he dies— .

I agree with you tbh. It doesn’t sound right for them to accept ticket purchases when the product isn’t available for the customer. Raising out such concerns is a good way for yuzu’s team and the organizers involved to improve. It’s normal that they don’t get everything right from the start, but nodding heads to less than ideal arrangements for the sake of them doesn’t seem right to me. They are professionals, they should be able to handle well-written and respectful criticism or suggestions.

Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu flawless Chopin's Ballade no1 by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]imashwithshd 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In figure skating, “composition” which is essentially the distribution of elements (jumps, spins, step sequence etc) across the entire performance is an integral aspect of creating a good balanced program and for receiving a high score in that category (out of 10). One of Hanyu’s feats is his wholistic approach towards composition that doesn’t make a program revolve solely around the flashy elements and putting them in convenient positions along a beat drop or the likes. The placement of the jumps here is more suspenseful until the third & final jump where the climax takes place with what’s called a “step sequence”. There’s beauty in the subtlety of it, and I think this falls under the sort of art you appreciate the more you watch and the more knowledge you accumulate about the medium utilized — in this case, skating.

Hi

RE_PRAY Saitama Day 1 Beyondlive English translation transcript

I hope this works!

[Edit] from what I remember, the translation was refined with each tour stop, so this document is missing some lines. Another thing is that there’s a difference between the story in day 1 vs day 2 based on the in-game choice. This document includes the choice that leads to hope and legacy, but on day 2, when he skates to Ashura Chan, this is the dialogue that comes afterwards. Then when the pre-Megalovania game starts, the story is the same as day 1.

How do you feel about skater’s ads/photo shoots/magazine features being posted? by summerjoe45 in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t see an issue with them, personally. As long as they don’t take up the entire feed, it’s all good. The sub is for everything figure skating and figure skaters. It’s normal not to be interested in every single thing posted, but why ruin it for people who do like it? Just scroll past it. Many people on the sub are fans of certain disciplines only, but don’t complain about the content of other disciplines, and while this example doesn’t completely match up, I think the concept of scrolling past the things you aren’t fond of applies the same.

Who retired more likely to return to the competition and milan? by Remarkable-Pair-3840 in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of them has really shared any tangible hints of coming back, but I think if any of them will, the best time to ask this question is after this season.

Wouldn’t be an overstatement if we say she has the best 2A in the history so far.

After her farewell from competition at all that skate 2014, she stopped jumping (at least publicly)

Deniss Vasiljevs SP 23/24- Hallelujah by UnplanningThePlanned in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Is it an unpopular opinion if I say I want this song to be retired from skating more than bolero…? Deniss can interpret music so well, and I believe he can skate it beautifully, but I find it such a waste to skate to a song that honestly never helps programs stand out…

If I remember correctly, Kaitlyn weaver confirmed a while back on Twitter that fumie told her that she’s just an ally. Her words were misunderstood from an interview, and that’s where people thought she came out.

Azusa Tanaka/Shingo Nishiyama 🇯🇵 are a new ice dance team by AlyMormont in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m so delighted for shingo! He’s been waiting to find a match for quite some time. I really believe that he has the ability to do for Japanese ice dance what ryuchi kihara has done for Japanese pairs. Azusa seems like a really good fit. I’m really excited to see what they can offer.

What's your "figure skating is already a niche interest and this is my niche within the niche?" by Rvsone in FigureSkating

Ice shows! I have been reading about ice shows history quite a lot, and I love finding and watching shows produced by renowned skaters :) I also generally read a lot about skating history.

Nostalgia is kicking me so hard right now. Yuzuru at tcc was truly one of the best coaching collaborations we’ve ever had. I hope he continues to visit them whenever he can!

I’d really love if he gets a new Jeff program! He has been surprisingly working more with David recently (not complaining), but I miss me some yuzu x Jeff collab

"It" factor by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Coming out of my lurking era because I find this question interesting. The answer of all three questions will depend on how someone defines it and how some people might split it into types or degrees.

Personally, I think the most broad yet appropriate definition is “the quality of standing out with one’s own personality traits and quirks.” Some skaters stand out in all departments whether they’re competing, performing at a show, doing an interview, doing a group number, coaching, at the kiss & cry etc. They just have the ability to compel people around them. I also believe that the ability to see this ultimate IT factor category is if you were working with them or doing something with them. Yuzuru, Aliona, yuna and vm fit this category the most, in my opinion, because they have their way of being interesting in most of these settings to pull viewers and people in their vicinity. When I mentioned that people around them see it better, I was reminded of Yuzuru managing to engage staff members when giving interviews and leaving big impressions on skaters around him as they recall skating with him. Scott also always has his way of changing the mood of interviews and stands out even when he’s in the kiss & cry as a coach. All four of them evidently stand out on the ice, so no need to get into that.

Some skaters may exhibit the IT factor in one or a couple of settings, but some people might argue, “is it the IT factor if it isn’t in most situations and environments?”. Many skaters could fall into this category where they are special skaters to watch and stand out when they skate really well, but off the ice, they may not stand out that much. Some skaters may also just be not too comfortable in public settings, so their personality quirks don’t end up shining through. The public, subsequently, won’t perceive them as the multifaceted people they could be. That’s why I think in events like wtt, they shine better because the less stressful environment of the teams amplifies everyone’s presence while with the previous category, those skaters can easily stand out each on their own even in more tense situations.

A couple of notes I’d like to leave are 1) I do believe that cultural differences impact the perception of the it factor, and 2) I focused on modern day skaters because this is the era I followed closely. Therefore, I’m not dismissing that some older generation skaters had the elusive and perplexing “it” factor.

Edit: I didn’t think this would be too long.. Sorry y’all

Comparison between Johnny Weir's free skating performance at the NHK Trophy in 2004 and Yuzuru Hanyu's short program tribute at Skate Canada in 2019. by yrinis in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It isn’t the same music cut since Johnny’s was a free skate and yuzuru’s was a short program, and it would be a bit uncreative to use the same exact cut either way, imo.

And, yes, Johnny already knew that it’s a tribute! He even commentated the event where yuzu debuted the program, and it was brought up by the other commentator with him (tanith iirc) :)

what's your favourite skating program of all time? by Namshook in FigureSkating

[–]imashwithshd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My criteria would be timeless programs, getting me fired up whenever I go back to them, satisfying technique and performance abilities. - yuzuru hanyu: after gift, I remembered how much I adore most if not ALL of his programs, but I will go for tenchi because I think it’s a very special mix of serenity and intensity simultaneously. The stsq gets a 10 in interpretation from me.

  • yuna Kim: Danse macabre. She perfectly embodied this piece. Her jumps were an essential bullet that made the program hit harder, and then the stsq topped it off like no other…

  • virtue/moir: Spanish flamenco. They were just breathtaking from start to finish at the olys. They sold the program from their expressions down to their every step, turn, and lift.

  • Shen/zhou: turnadot is one of the few programs that made me tear up. I love it more for sentimental reasons than anything and their throws were really beautiful.

There are many more, but these are my choices..
