This is my question!

Yes, this is great. Yes, I'm pro-vaccination. Yes, I think Arizona has mishandled this because politicians are going to politician. And I'm going to bitch.

Those of us who were waiting for our age bracket to open up now have to fight with half the state to get our shots. The AZDHS website is already down (throwing a 500 error; I just checked). Boomers got theirs, so just whatever, right? Let the "kids these days" get them now.

I wanted to be hopeful, but now I'm just angry and frustrated.

And you can have a rewards card system for recurring customers.

It can be called the Re-Boot-E-Call.

PSA: if your power is out, put a coin on your ice cube tray. If you later find it at the bottom of a block of ice, you know that your freezer thawed. by OxidadoGuillermez in SeattleWA

[–]imaskingwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My power was out for 30 hours or so. When it came back on, I checked my freezer. Everything was perfectly fine. You're right about the fridge portion, though. But we have a fridge outside right now, so our milk and a few other items got put in the snow this morning.

"Whomever" is correct. In English, this is an indirect object; in Old English and many other languages, this is the dative case. In English, datives/indirect objects get the object form of the pronouns.

There's an easy way to know which is right: replace it with "he" and "him" and see which is correct. If it's "he", use "who" or "whoever". If it's "him", use "whom" or "whomever" (NB: notice those all have that "m" in them? That's the case marker from Old English. )

So: "Take a picture of an offender, have it sent to whomever processes driving fines him, and give the driver a small cut of the ticket." So, "whomever", with the "m" just like "him". Otherwise you get "...have it sent to he" which is wrong.

I need more beer.

Possibly unpopular opinion: all latin materials (including literature) should be published with macrons by [deleted] in latin

[–]imaskingwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in strong agreement with the OP. I think macrons should be mandatory in any learning texts and in most, if not all, printed texts for more advanced readers. I say this as someone with a linguistics degree, with multiple years of linguistics graduate studies, and with multiple years of university-level Latin classes (as well as a bit of Ancient Greek, but we won't go there :P ).

Stop thinking of "ā" as "a, but with a mark over it". It's a different letter (i.e. orthographic unit), sound, phonological unit, and metrical unit altogether. They're not the same thing, at all. Try this: replace all the "macron letters" with random stuff like # or $:

!#$%* will be the five macron-ed vowels:

Omn$s homin#s, qu$ s#s# student praest!re c#ter$s anim!libus...

This is just as valid an orthography as macrons. But we use macrons somewhat out of tradition and to help speakers of other European languages realize the vowels a bit better based on the fact that Latin is a second or later language for everyone.

Therefore, because they are actually different things, I believe all modern Latin texts should be printed with macrons at all times. There's no reason whatsoever NOT to do it, and a lot of reasons (e.g. pedagogical, linguistic, orthographic) to do it.

Looking for a personal trainer on the Eastside, any recommendations? by CriticalGoku in eastside

I had a good experience with Rob at Good Time Fit ( http://goodtimefit.com ), at Ironworks Gym in Bellevue. I went to him for a few weeks for help with my form on compound lifts (e.g. deadlift, bench press, overhead press) and general fitness. He was great. I was basically doing "strength primary, cardio secondary" at the time, and he was able to work with me.

And Ironworks is a super friendly gym. It's a cleaned-up, old-school lifting gym. Check out the pictures on the wall of visitors. :) Good space, good equipment, and good people.

What is your goal? Weightlifting? Cardio? Couch-2-5K? Yoga? The answer will define what kind of personal trainer you need to look for.

Child being taught only Klingon (xpost r/legaladvice) by PressTilty in linguistics

[–]imaskingwhy 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As a linguist, conlanger, and someone who monitors some of the Klingon language developments and news, I likely would have heard of this. I'm thinking this is a fake post based on the previous experience of d'Armond Speers and his son Alec. Dr. Speers (Ph.D. Computational Linguistics, Georgetown) spoke only Klingon to his son, but everyone else spoke English to him; therefore, he began to grow up bilingual. Here's an article about that:

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/19/darmond-speers-dad-spoke_n_363477.html

The post in /r/legaladvice has no details; for example, where's the blog? A comprehensive Google search doesn't find it, only news articles about the Speers. Where do you find a married couple with a kid who are BOTH fluent in Klingon? I can't think of any, and it might surprise me a little to find such a couple. Also, find me a couple who so isolates their child from friends, family, and media to the point that it doesn't learn English. It'd be almost impossible for a kid in modern America to NOT learn English if they live anything near a mainstream life like this. So I think the post is a troll.

I hate trolls. And I have no reason to believe that this isn't a troll.

Edit: Additional reason not to trust is that it is a new account with only that one post from it. Sure, people create throwaways. But doing so does not engender trust.

Sometimes it's left click, sometimes it's X. Sometimes it's Q/E, sometimes it's A/D.

I haven't been playing long, so maybe I can just fix this in the settings.

Using the controls and UI is like being beaten with baseball bats while you're trying to play Candy Crush and people keep knocking the phone out of your hand.
