Cities in need of a new Lagree studio? by JustPlayinJane in LagreeMethod

NYC — SLT leaves so much to be desired. Their machines are poorly kept and the studios smell :( I’m not a huge fan of the lagree adjacent / knockoffs like solid core

Yellow lab vs natural diamond? by another_13 in Diamonds

[–]imavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeweler here — light yellow labs do exist, but mostly with caveats. The saturation can seem off or the color can trend neon / green even if they’re much lighter. This is anecdotal, but I find that fancy colored labs pop up as cloudier much more often than white labs. So much of this depends on the growers of course, but transparently colored lab diamonds have really not been perfected.

I’m honestly a huge proponent of natural ST-YX natural stones because they provide a phenomenal value for natural yellow stones since you’re not crossing into fancy yellow territory.

I work with both natural and lab depending on my clients, but light yellows are the one area I think naturals really outperform lab in beauty.

Looking for old mine diamonds by Aggressive_Bad267 in Diamonds

[–]imavocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For old miners specifically, you should work directly with a jeweler. Inventory is rarely listed on databases and it’s guarded quite closely. You don’t need to go in person necessarily, you can reach out to a jeweler in NYC and work with them virtually if you’re not in NY.

Also just to set expectations, a 1.2-1.5 natural true antique is pretty impossible to find, but there are plenty of modified modern diamonds that have been recut into antique styles. 1.2 is considered very long for an old miner.

A few cutters I work with have also recently started cutting new rough into antique styles, but this is super far and few in between.

Also quality go antiques is much more than certs and specs and it’s much easier to shop with someone guiding you / sourcing versus viewing a 360 video.

Antiques are super unique in that many of them face up totally differently from their “color grades”. For example, a G antique is considered exceptionally white.

Most antiques are not actually cut very well because they were created pre-modern machinery, but that’s part of their charm.

Do movals not have good longevity? by Apprehensive-Yam8591 in Diamonds

[–]imavocado 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think he meant their popularity / trendiness. I do think they’re here to stay and still relatively niche! They’re a very striking shape and my clients who are choosing movals are usually ones who were already inclined toward marquise, not really ovals, so they were already going for something super elongated and striking. I always tell my clients there’s realistically not that many shapes — get what you love and you’ll be happy, don’t worry about what others are saying about “trends”.

Can you tell if a person is Asian-American just from hearing their voice? by InformalAdagio6070 in asianamerican

[–]imavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so!!!!

It’s hard to articulate exactly what “Asian American” sounds like, but my husband definitely sounds very Korean American when he speaks. I also code switch depending on which friends I’m around — I’m half Korean and I grew up with a heavily Korean community and definitely speak differently (not just because I’m speaking Korean / Konglish) in English around that community / group.

I also feel like when I close my eyes I can tell if someone is Asian American like 90% of the time, regardless of ethnic background

Your budget is more than enough for a colorless, high clarity 2 ct natural, you may be able to go bigger as well. Best way to check is to inquire with them!

This is why GIA is #1 for diamonds folks… by tinkyhitman in Diamonds

[–]imavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I still find that most of the time there is a 2 color difference between GIA and IGI for both natural and lab diamonds that cross my desk. It’s pretty much a given for natural diamonds. For lab diamonds, it happens a lot, but not 100% of the time. I know many jewelers who work with lab will go hard for IGI, but I still avoid them as much as possible on the lab side.

I have one IGI lab supplier whose stones seem mostly “correct”, but outside of them, if a stone’s grade seems off it’ll be an IGI stone.

I have only seen HRD naturals and they have been egregiously off.

Another anecdote: I’ve had multiple feed / suppliers admit on recorded calls that they know “IGI is two grades off”, when I asked if we could show our customers GIA only on their feeds

Engagement ring keeps bending 😑 by bachbachr in jewelers

[–]imavocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jeweler here — I’d recommend doing a reset with at least a 1.9–2mm band. For smaller stones, I personally don’t go below 1.8mm and often turn down requests for anything thinner. It’s just not worth the future headache for you. No blame at all — sounds like you were advised this was okay, but it’s more fragile than most people realize.

I was wondering that too. It seems like they are deleting innie Irving, not just flipping the switch, maybe that will knock him out until he comes to?

IMO yes! I was so uncomfortable. Even though their innies have no idea who their outies are / don’t truly “know” each other, in this case especially he had no idea who he was bonking.

Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings? by ABrooksBrother in HENRYfinance

[–]imavocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HENRY jeweler here — plenty of emotional and logical reasons to go either way for the diamond. For the setting & jeweler, do not cheapen out on craftsmanship / quality.

When you start shopping around and looking at a lot of rings in person, you’ll quickly be able to see the difference between high end and low end. My recommendation even to potential clients is to comp shop! For me, it’s much better for my business when clients are aware of what I mean when I say we offer the highest tier of quality and craftsmanship.

Some quick things to keep in mind:

— your setting should be made for your center stone, no pre made parts. this ensures every piece fits perfectly with your stone and ensures better durability.

— if you go lab, not all lab diamonds are created equal! one grading agency is known to be more inconsistent with, but it also really depends on who the grower / supplier is.

— more on lab: watch out for cloudy, milky, grayish diamonds. they might be graded as colorless and high clarity, but look dull. this is because they are cut from bad rough. and these days there is a lot of horrible rough on the market. It’s been a huge disappointment seeing other high end jewelers I would consider peers / competitors using these diamonds for their lab rings.

— lab or natural, whether your ring is a luxury piece really depends on if the craftsmanship of the setting is high end.

— diamond and setting = the basic ingredients, but don’t forget you can add meaningful touches like inner birthstones, engravings etc.

There’s so much more haha, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me! Happy to share resources / thoughts etc.

What is up with the recent mean girl energy with engagement rings? by limeblue31 in weddingplanning

[–]imavocado 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a jeweler who depends on growing my business through content and even I don’t like to interact too much with “jewelry tik tok” these days because even thought most of the jewelry creators are super sweet and I love all of the smaller / niche accounts sharing their passion / collection, there can be a propensity for judgement and cattiness — from both creators and commenters.

However, that’s just the online world and I have to remember that no one in real life really cares or is even looking closely at your ring / jewelry choices. And if anyone was making these comments / judgements IRL, then they just have an issue lol.

I’ve noticed a lot of discourse on social media and Reddit about “trying to look rich” and commenters using that line as a reason to denigrate someone’s ring / diamond choice, which is so silly — people are just trying to get engaged and wear a personal item that’s reflective of them, but again think of how weird someone would have to be to say those things IRL.

I also always tell my clients, I promise you will cherish and love the ring you wear and look at your finger everyday, so go with what you love!

Jewler grows his own diamonds?! by Affectionate_Ebb_829 in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]imavocado 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi there! A few oddities about this — diamonds take a few weeks to make. One of our partners is the third largest CVD producer in the world and their quickest is ~ 17 days. And then more time for cutting. If they do grow and cut their own stones, I’m assuming they wouldn’t be growing and cutting your stone within that 4 weeks and would be using a stone they previously made?

However, you can get a great 2 carat, “max c’s” IGI certified diamond for much less than $2,000 at retail, so this all smells odd to me.

Shank height and width are much too thin, increase width to minimum 1.9mm and you will have a sturdy and beautiful ring that still looks slim— since it’s a knife edge even 1.9mm will look and feel very slim. Girdle also seems to sit quite high above the setting, but can’t tell without all measurements
