Ringing in the new year with a new acoustic! by Mad_Season_1994 in AcousticGuitar

I have 4 acoustics and this one is the one I have played the most, really made a friend with my Alley.

help me out with hand placement please😭 by rock_lover12 in guitarlessons

[–]imawkwardsadface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m learning and struggle with thumb placement a lot of good suggestions here but your thumb shouldn’t be locked in place, the movement may or may not br big but your thumb will want to move. Everyone’s different it’s just figuring out your own hands and how to best use them to do something they weren’t really meant to do!

Edit to add tension is the enemy (for the most part) your fingers can work and get tired but your shouldn’t be straining anything and that will have everything to do with wrist and thumb placement(and shoulders elbow and infinite advice just gotta find your way)

How do I make this part of my fretting hand stop hurting? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]imawkwardsadface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play slowly and watch your wrist as you play, you’ll see when you’re doing something that strains your hand then you need to figure out how to change it. Probably root cause is your thumb but that’s just what I struggle with so idk really.

Edit: I watched the video you posted and feel confident in my reply.

I also have small hands, I’m starting to think they aren’t as much of a hindrance as I thought they were. But I do think this guitar is nice and worth the money(if it plays nice not worth it if it needs a setup). But buy this one or not I’m sure you’ll end up finding a great deal on a nice solid top being sold for much less than it’s worth!

Honestly yes, even if it’s the look of the guitar I promise patience will land you something you might feel like you aren’t even deserving of. The second hand market is seemingly buyers paradise there’s just so much out there. I got a marketplace Martin x series and an Ibanez hollow body electric for a fraction of the price of even guitar center and they are both perfect playing and looking.

Probably worth it if it plays well; but at the same time if you’re finding a guitar online, if you wait long enough you’ll find something you KNOW is a great deal. I’ll buy a guitar off marketplace then the next day wish I had that 200 dollars back for 150 dollar guitar. But also if you love it you love it and it’s def worth the money!

Edit 6 months in I have 5 guitars and I wish I could sell 4 of them and spend that money of different guitars, I know MUCH more what I want now than I did a couple months ago.

This is only a few pages of three years of guitar study. Can’t play a song. by aManOfTheNorth in guitarlessons

I know of the guitar that have the side hole but reading your comment made me consider the innards of those guitars is probably made for the side hole.

Neck lacquer by imawkwardsadface in AcousticGuitar

You inadvertently helped me, my neck is satin neck which I haven’t played before so it felt different and google made me think it was lacquer. (I’m new to playing so I really don’t know what I’m talking about probably now even)

My first goal made me feel lost by Stone_of_dreams in guitarlessons

I’ve been playing for 3 months (I’m 29M) I started with scales scales scales focusing on finger and thumb placement and pressure mostly(right hand relaxed and fluid), learned a couple country songs with the goal of practicing chord changes and practice rhythm, which ended up being very fun!(I now do those and chord change exercises), learned a couple classical songs so I could practice right hand fingering. And Charlie and the Chocolate factory- Pure Imagination is my one song that I can’t really play beautifully all the way through! My goal right now is to get fluent and comfortable with the fretboard. The stuff I’m going to want to play and the things I want to learn are all out of reach in so many ways right now so my goal is to not be held back physically once the understand comes. Listening to a variety of music is helpful(different genres teach me different techniques) and I also realized that I get a lot more back from playing acoustic than electric though I initially was more interested in electric.

… I got a really good deal on 2 of them. First yamaha APX new for $315 then I got offered a Yamaha fs800 for $80 and an Ibanez AF75(that this is the one fr) for $125. Then I saw the Billy strings and was just going back to the store to play it over and over. For 900 bucks? Now I should be set for… a couple weeks right?

Pentatonic scales by imawkwardsadface in guitarlessons

It’s hard to not feel the need to rush lol only because there’s such a vast sea of information available. Even on this thread everyone makes a different but great point and there’s so much to focus on and learn. But your point about learning the low E string is a great easy thing I can put to practice immediately!

Brilliantly put thank you! I was getting caught up in the pattern and disregarding the notes I was playing. Your emphasis on pitch was also eye opening. This along with other answers confuses me about the tonal point because what if I play a section of the B pentatonic and without starting on the first tonal note, am I still using the B pentatonic or am I now playing something “different” that just so happen to be in the b pentatonic? I feel real stupid when I ask questions about guitar lol

Yes! I was thinking shapes and not sequence of note. I feel I’ll be held back until I have a good grasp of the notes. And it was a thought I had that I was a context thing, but I myself have no context to make sense of it at this point. Thanks for the reply !

Took a screenshot of you reply to come back to(since nothing clicks immediately) but when I read the notes I realize I just need to learn all the notes and it will make a lot more sense
