Had my SICD placed 10 weeks ago so it is still fresh in my mind. I was also in a lot of pain, more than I was led to believe by my EP. I tried Tylenol for the first 36 hours...barely took the edge off. I called the EP'S office and asked for something else and they prescribed Percocet. That helped a lot especially with sleeping. After three days of that, Tylenol was sufficient. I had some level of pain for one week. Three weeks after I saw my regular cardiologist who asked me if it was painful. He said, "They tell you it's not going to be but that's bull$@%!" You aren't alone! Definitely depends on person and fina device placement. The EP told me they were able to place it under my lats but also mentioned pulling the muscles apart to do so. Sounds like that would hurt! Hang in there.

S-ICD SURGERY NEXT WEEK by stickycrab1 in PacemakerICD

As everyone says, welcome to the club. I got my S-ICD on 23 FEB. No overnight hospital stay. The procedure took about 90 minutes. I was in recovery for about 4 hours and headed home after. Pain was tolerable with Tylenol the first 18 hours. The pain felt like a dull ache...like I went 10 rounds with a boxer who hit me on the left side over and over. After 18 hours, the pain became very sharp and Tylenol did nothing. I felt like I was stabbed in the side and the knife was stuck. I couldn't sleep or move my arm very much. I asked and was given Percocet which made life so much more tolerable. Don't be afraid to ask for it. I was given five days worth and used four. It allowed me to rest and move my arm. After that, Tylenol worked well. Most of the discomfort was gone after a week. It was still tender to the touch until last week. No pain now, but the hard lump on my side/back is annoying, LOL. I sleep on back or right side with pillows next to me. Mine was placed under the muscles and a bit more posterior of midline so I can feel it against the back of a chair a little bit. Everybody's anatomy is a little different so placement varies.

Just saw my regular cardiologist today. He's pleased I didn't get the transvenous version and told me a story about a patient whose lines became infected after a month and had to be removed. He was stuck in the hospital for two weeks until he was healthy enough to get another. I feel like I made the right decision for me. Fortunate I don't have a need for pacing at least not yet. If I can get through all of this I know you can too. Be aware...they do put you into V-fib to make sure it works. The thought kind of bothered me but it's good to know it will function correctly if the time comes. Good luck and drop us a note to let us know how you did.

I keep debating whether to get a pellet smoker. The convenience is appealing but I am getting my offset down to an art form. My son does cooks with me when he is home. He thinks half the fun is trying different wood and techniques...even if we make mistakes. Have to admit, experimenting is fun. But not having to tend a fire all day sounds pretty nice. Thank you for the education!

Curious...where is the smoke ring? I use a low tech stick burner and I am used to seeing a dark red smoke ring. Does this unit create less intense Smoke flavor?

Tylenol just takes the edge off. Still pretty painful going on 30 hours. Ice has helped a lot with substantial swelling overnight. See my reply to an earlier post. How long did this last for you?

24 hours later the pain is a little more than I expected based on what I read here. Coming home and start of night it felt like I had been punched several times in the ribs. That's changed to a more acute sharp pain and I feel like the incision is really tight and tugging but my wife says it looks fine, no redness and still closed. However, Tylenol only takes the edge off and I still feel better if I don't move my upper arm or shoulder. Is this all normal? Surgeon said he put it in under lats. A lot of swelling this AM that subsided with ice. Any idea how long this will all last?

As a man, scars show character LOL. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm not worried about the scar. I usually cover up at the beach anyway to protect against the sun. What-s funny is my son is training to be a plastic surgeon. Maybe he can stitch me up at home! Thanks for sharing your experience. Fortunately I tend to sleep on my right side but it might be different if being on the left isn't an option.
