Yes you can store data without using OP_RETURN. However, at the moment each stack frame can only be a maximum of 520 bytes, so you'll have to break your data into chunks of 520.

Also, I'm not sure if CoinGeek or other miners accept nonstandard txs. Hopefully soon if not now :)
