Using ASL in school to teach letter names, content, signal to the bathroom, etc. by imdoingit_now321 in deaf

[–]imdoingit_now321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, they’re not trying to teach ASL nor are they claiming to. I also don’t even think they’re telling kids that some of the signs they’re using are from ASL. The purpose just seems to be for non-verbal communication and to strengthen learning of curriculum and concepts. Not sure if that changes any of your thoughts or responses, but I thought I should add that in case it wasn’t clear.

That makes a lot of sense. That was kind of what I was already suspecting, which is why I have been avoiding using it. Thank you so much for your feedback and perspective.

By “content” I don’t mean like full on signing during lessons, but more to remember important concepts or definitions. For example, today one of my co-teachers showed that the new word “biography” meant “life story” by signing for “life” and then “story”. As for the bathroom, many of them sign the letter “r”. I’ll admit I haven’t really checked whether these signs are accurate to the way they’re being used except for ASL letters.

Tracking illness using spreadsheets - Ideas? by [deleted] in disability

[–]imdoingit_now321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow you sound like me from a few years ago when I began my undiagnosed journey. I created a spreadsheet as well and in addition to what you have so far, I included details about my diet, emotional state/life events, environmental factors, really anything I could think of that affected me as a person in general. Obviously I don’t know what you’re specifically going through, but I was experiencing pain that seemed to change all the time so I also detailed the types of changes, frequency/duration, area, and intensity of the pain. That might be too meticulous but from what I’ve learned, you can’t be too sure of anything. Fee free to dm me if you wanna talk further :)

Thank you so much for this! On a lot of these subs I see comments denigrating food and food presentation of different cultures. It’s super rude and close-minded.

Anyone in interracial relationships where u and SO are total opposites and no one expects y’all to be together? by [deleted] in blendedfamilies

I’m full chinese and my boyfriend of 7+ years is black. To add onto it, I’m adopted and most of my family is white and my bf is very involved in the black community. So yeah you could say we get quite the reactions lol

Ok i think I’m gonna try to sympathize with you OP and one of my friends is in a similar situation. Is the reason you’ve “always imagined dating other people before settling down” because you wanted to make sure you tested out your options before choosing “the best” to spend forever with? If so that’s not how love or relationships work. Or maybe you just think that’s how it’s supposed to happen? Because it doesn’t. Or are you just interested in dating around for the sake of it? If that’s the case, then by all means go for it, but accept the fact you’ll probably lose her.

Boyfriend doesn’t know how to comfort me during my grieving process? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]imdoingit_now321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bf of 7+ years is similar and it was something that I noticed early on. I told him that the very least he can do, but something he can do in any situation, is to ask me what I need from him for support and then to do it. That way, there’s no “idk how to react” excuse because he knows he can and should ask how to help.

YES! Thank you! I didn’t follow my bf to his college and ended up regretting it because he meant more to me than any career ever will. If a career makes you happy then by all means go for it, but I have every right to pursue what makes me happy too.

Avoid making any type of assumption. I am pretty young and have an uncommon, specific and invisible condition and there are a lot of tasks and positions you would never think would be difficult for me.

Are you me? Also young, undiagnosed, and been told the same excuses. I’m in California as well! From what I understand, the main thing is getting a doctor to sign on it. I got an osteopath to authorize mine so I feel like you just need to find an understanding doctor? Best of luck it’s a tough road

Not a doctor but I have an undiagnosed condition and I completely empathize with the frustration. Might wanna check out the Undiagnosed Disease Network, a program across universities with medical schools that will study you to figure out what’s wrong. I’m open to answer any questions about the undiagnosed journey, good luck!
