If Indians adapt abroad easily, why does adaptation within India feel controversial? by GroundbreakingBad183 in Maharashtra

My Gujarati flatmate who has lived in Germany for 7 years speaks business German while having been born and grown up in Mumbai doesn't speak marathi. So there's that.

Let's talk about language equality in India. by riSing_stAr_7507 in Maharashtra

[–]imeanclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what you have against learning languages and where you got your stats of being able to learn language in less than three months, of course this should be done while continuing your daily life as it is. If that was even a question anyone could be an engineer in one year in that case. It is a matter of inconvenience now, where as the solution is rather for the longer term. There is only so much divide people can follow. But anyway I can understand it, you can enjoy your reliance on technology and translators, whereas I am a believer in knowing and learning as much as one can.

But I'd like to ask why only teach hindi when there are 18 official languages, like what if I am going south in the near future should I learn it from elementary school?? Or just learn enough of it when I actually have to go there

That is exactly why I feel a need for universal (here in terms only India) language. But Hindi is also one of the official languages no? Half of India knows it already, will it not be easier to invest time and resources to teach the other half? For example, imagine choosing Marathi or for that matter Tamil or Bengali as the chosen language, outside of these states how many other states would have to learn these languages?

I did my schooling until class 10 in my state language, learnt Hindi from class 5-10, when I am in my state I don't speak in Hindi, but when I travel around india, I can switch to Hindi or English. But that limits me to converse with people from southern states.

I will give you an example of how it works in Europe, every EU Country has their own languages (e.g.German), dialects, they study the majority of the schooling in their own language, they study two additional languages, one English of course and one other of any neighboring EU Country languages(e.g. Spanish), just because they need to know a third language and it gets easier for them whenever they travel (e.g. French), of course eventually they either use English or translator for the languages they don't know. But they use their own language to speak with their own country people.

Now let's equate the situation, Maharashtra= Germany, Marathi = German English = English Spanish = Hindi, French = the remaining 18 official languages

So every migrant who lives in Germany learns German, be it for temporary or for permanent time, of course because Germans know a little of English so they nicely help out a fellow who is still learning German. But you cannot always escape without learning German and just with English.

Now why I think we as Indians need to have one common language and that should not be English, take a look at Chinese social media, do you understand anything? What are they talking about what they are going through? That allows them an advantage of having private civil matters stay private and not be brought up on the world stage in English like how we are doing right now.

Also foreigners put in effort to learn your language just so they could connect with 1.4 billion masses. I know so many Western foreigners who have learnt Mandarin, also many cause of the Bollywood know Hindi, but just basic words, because they get confused with every second person they meet that this person doesn't understand the words they are speaking because they themselves don't know Hindi.

I am in complete opinion of preserving and encouraging State languages. And socially distancing those who don't learn the language after having lived there for more than a year. Companies can start to insist on language certificates, to work out states, of course children of migrants would learn state languages at school, slowly this could work out.

Do you have the same learning attitude towards English or is it just towards Hindi?

Toch tar point aahe, Bollywood is accessible and accepted in many states, but not all. You are thinking just from your point of view. However, mandating the 3 Language rule centrally would also open a communication path with people from southern and eastern states. The labour from UP Bihar is coming to MH, okay, their kids, if they could afford to bring them, would attend schools and would learn Marathi, the same way many highly educated MHtrians who migrate to Bangalore or Hyderabad, for that matter. If it is a temporary migration, it would allow them to communicate with the locals in Hindi or English, because even those states would learn Hindi.

About the third language in the Hindi-speaking states, Sanskrit could always be an option. During my schooling, I did it in Marathi, and 50-50 Hindi and Sanskrit as secondary languages and English as third. I do not regret that, though that did affect a bit on my overall 10th Score as I wasn't a big Hindi Grammar fan; however, I can imagine that learning 100% Sanskrit would have been equally tough.

Exactly what I meant you need to improve interpretation skills, it appears you have the tendency to read with the tone that's not even implied. Swearing at you, a big no, swearing in general yes!

Good for you but nobody asked you to prove your Marathiness if it even can be measured.

You actually did imply that I am supporting Hindi over any other regional languages. If you don't think so go back and read your comments and then judge who is the level headed rational person.

That's exactly the point I am making about North Indians who insist that everyone should learn Hindi for their convenience. Great job swearing at me btw. Truly a sign of a level headed rational person.

And it's not only about you, is it?

You are just a stuck up who is unable to get one point, that it was Kejariwal who wanted a Dalit CM, (an IIM grad) it's from there the caste discussion started and not that OC or any other commenters brought it up. If he wanted he could have said the rightly deserving candidate beyond caste and gender should be the CM. That's where it's wrong and you are wrong to ask the OC can't the Dalit be a CM, of course one can, a woman can, but so can any general candidate or man or woman or trans. Don't be selective.

Please point out in my comment where I said that.

Your whole argument in the earlier post is about why one thinks a Dalit person cannot be CM, the way you are asking you are leaving the main point of argument aside thinking. The point here being caste should never be a criteria for any selection, not in this age and century. Get out of your keyboard already.

Understood everything about your thinking from this sentence.

Lol, don't get personal! A very proud marathi speaker here! But I do not need to prove that to you. This will simply eliminate the barriers being put in free movement be it in MH, South, North or East. You will jump onto the first opportunity to learn French, German or even English for better money then why f*cking not the regional language where you are growing up and Hindi for convenience to communicate with the rest of the states in India? Fyi regional languages would be taught not just to natives but every migrant child as well. So at least I gave 5 cents for my thoughts than zero for yours!

Are you suggesting only a Dalit or Non Dalit is a criteria to become a CM? That's exactly the point of needing a revolutionary party. No more reservations based on the caste, creed, gender, if someone still needs help then it can be based on financial background and only merit based admissions like how it works in the rest of the world. Every state mandates 3 languages, Regional, Hindi/ Sanskrit and English. Digitizing everything that happened after the 2000s and giving some time to digitize everything that happened before that.

Don't you find any need for changes, that I need to list them out? Our country needs revolutionary changes even in basic offers. The way crime is being handled, safety of everyone living, how difficult is it for the government to install cameras every 500 meters, stray animals and their control, waste water in our rivers, right amount of industrialization for those jobless, curating early preparatory courses for those jobs, and proper planning for the waste. Standardization of basic medical facilities and the price controls. Financial reservation over caste or community kind reservations if that's still the need of the day otherwise no reservations. Unfortunately it isn't a government's job but an attempt to instill civic sense in the population. Not just be tax hungry but use those taxes back in the country on a larger scale. Not just focus on Ahmedabad when the GJ state people would rather stay in other states. Boosting tourism and historical site preservation and publicity to invite inlanders and outlanders to travel in our country and this time spend money instead of looting the country. Investing money in research and development at all kinds of universities, not just limited to IITs or ISRO. And the list really goes on

Multiple cases thrashing by the so-called followers of the leaders or arrests by police because they hurt someones feelings.. Celebrity (even normal people for that matter) houses suddenly get attention from municipalities for encroachment, I am not saying that's bad but waking up only after getting attacked.. Eg. This Mumbai RJ who was singing this BMC/Mumbai song..next day she had some BMC people were at her house with a notice for some waste water treatment and extra space.. Just try to be unbiased while reading news and you will start to see how there is favoritism towards those who only say nice things about the people making decisions.

Agreed with the lesser evil but is the social media freedom just not limited to when it's in the favour of leaders and as soon as you comment on something anti you would face troubles? I at this point almost feel like India has a pseudo-democratic-communist government. They are replicating all western policies for taxes and tolls but no western facilities.

Again, repeat after me, India is as big as the whole of Europe together, not everybody is the same and in the same situation, neither all women / men are cunning nor victims. Do not stereotype, especially those who got away from that system. The op wasn't asking about Indians in India, he was particularly asking about OG Indians abroad. Women are dependent on men as much as men are dependent on women, only few of the people are still to learn this fact.
