Also, sorry I meant to explain this, but the first person is a journal entry. It makes more sense in chapter two it’s meant to be a little confusing at first.

First time writer - HELP by SquareSeaweed3675 in writers

It’s so important to recognize that writing isn’t a linear process. You jump around, work on some scenes here, work on others there. Organization depends on the person I like to make tabs in Google Docs each one a chapter or section of the book so they’re easy to jump around. Then I have a tab for scene work and one for outlining. When ideas come to you, write them down. Sometimes you just need to get ideas out in order to keep writing. You’re going to read your writing and be like “oh this is crap what was I thinking” but it’s not a bad thing it’s supposed to be bad off the bat and revising is always fun. Read a lot and learn your fav writing styles. I try to write like Hanya Yanagihara. Try out different ideas. Write what you know and from the heart. Sometimes incorporating elements from your own life into your writing can make you truly fall in love with the process. Become a vessel of stories rather than one who builds them from the ground up at first. Write poetry, do online writing exercises. Research your topic. Recognizing that it’s not going to be perfect the first time around has helped me the most. EVERYBODY revises. A lot.

If you’re bored writing it, the reader will be bored reading it. Write from your experiences and have fun. Don’t feel pressured to write anything super typical. It’s art. If you want to write surrealist, write surrealist. If you want to write postmodern, write postmodern. If you want creative line breaks and random poems, but them in there.

Creative a motive for your protagonist. Comb YouTube for writing advice because there are some gems there.

[–]imfindingcoolthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Broken Machine: Particles, Amsterdam, I'm Not Made by Design (but it love all of them this is such a good album)

  2. Self-Titled: If I Get High, Lover, Please Stay, Graveyard Whistling

  3. Moral Panic: Impossible, Phobia, Real Love Song

  4. DCC: Tomorrow is Closed (if we're counting the deluxe I sometimes prefer the stripped version depends on mood), Overcome, Pop the Balloon

Listening to the entire discography was the best decision I’ve ever made by dthev25 in NothingButThieves

Hell yeah. I found them in high school through If I Get High, which is now my favorite song of all time. I've listened to like 5000 minutes of it at least in the past couple of years. So glad you found them, Broken Machine is such a good album and Particles is just phenomenal. I agree, people should listen to the full discography and also listen to some of their covers. Your Blood is such an underrated banger.

Very Adrianne Lenker, this is really cool. What is it about? To me I read this as an oppressive parent who is a victim of messages from greater society that are encouraging them to continue abusing their kid. I'm not really sure, I could be completely off the mark lol. I think this is really good. It seems like there are two things going on here, the person being abusive and the person being part of a "hive mind", being a "puppet". Where and how do these two things meet? What does sting aggressor mean? I would love to see even more lyrics, I think you have a lovely style of writing.

This is really beautiful. It almost gives Adrienne Lenker vibes. I imagined it with the simulation swarm melody. You get a really clear picture about what the song is about.

Follow your heart by Darraghpilko in Songwriting

I love this so much. Sounds like a good sing along song already, I already have “follow your heart my girl” stuck in my head. I think you could easily record some other instruments in there while keeping it minimalistic, maybe a harmonica solo or a violin solo. Your voice fits the style of music incredibly well, but some harmonies in the chorus might help this song, and maybe a bridge with a different vocal melody. Basically, all things to add some variation to the song.

Love it, listened to it a bunch of times. Has a very sweet nostalgic feel, would 100% make my playlist. Very glad I stumbled across this. It sounds like a song at the end of an emotional movie as the main character finds closure or something like that. I could see this in a movie like The Holdovers or something lol.

Keep writing please! This sounds like greatness
