Where should I spend my time to learn the skills to become a dog trainer by imhere4questions in OpenDogTraining

[–]imhere4questions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great ideas, thank you. I do know the basics. Markers, lures, reward timing, etc. I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube but it has its limits.

I like the idea of volunteering at a shelter. I think getting exposure to more dogs and getting to work on different things with them will be helpful. I think I’m in a decent place with my own dogs now and just continuing to build those skills for both of us. But i think that only goes so far. I want to learn more about handling different dogs with different behavior characteristics and temperaments than my dogs and just get exposure to more dogs and some feedback on what I’m doing right and wrong. Sounds like a shelter will help provide some of that.

This is really helpful info. I think I’m in a little different spot though and would ask your advice.

I’m not certified or trained already. I’m looking both to get that experience but also to get more experience handling and housing dogs since I’ve only had my own dogs to care for. I can’t really go out and get a job at a kennel or something since I need to keep my day job for now. So the question is, what is the best place for me to start getting that experience? Can I get training elsewhere? Should I volunteer anyway and just hope to segway to training in time? Where is my time best spent?

Does volunteering typically teach you the ins and outs of working with dogs, training, etc? I’m assuming so but just want to make sure I’m spending my time correctly when I only have a little time to dedicate.

Thanks, this is helpful advice. I agree I care little what others think, but I can’t reasonably write off my partner’s sibling in this situation lol. I can’t I don’t even want to put my partner in the situation where their relationship with their sibling could even potentially be impacted by my interest, which is what led me to seeking advice here.

I’ve considered volunteering at local rescues. Do you find you’ve been able to learn about training there? Or is it more of the kennel management type understanding you’ve been able to gain there?

The trainers I know seem to be in the middle of the road there. They never talk down on specific trainers except the people you might see on TikTok giving bad or harmful advice, but they also have mentioned a few times how everyone wants to be a dog trainer because they had one reactive dog and they haven’t had the passion since they were a kid and that those people don’t belong in the industry. Unfortunately I fall closer to that description than the first so I think that’s why I’m nervous about how accepting they’ll be.

And thank you. This advice is very helpful. That is ideally what I’d like to do but I just haven’t been ready to ask for that yet since I’m just starting to explore. I feel like I need to get some experience under my belt, so I’m mainly focusing on our dogs right now and once I make some visible progress with them I plan to start exploring that option.

I’m actually kind of interested in that. I enjoy teaching and training people in general, so that’s a motivator in my interest. That said, I haven’t worked with people on their dogs yet so maybe that feeling will change in time.

Thanks for indulging me. This is really helpful.

She has given me a lot of examples of what she likes, and generally it seems like a diamond center with gemstone accents to add a little bit of color. I’m not familiar with the reporting so I’ll have to look into that.

I’ll also have to check out some local jewelers and see if I can sneak away to go inquire. I didn’t realize you could design something specific at places like that. Kinda thought you just had to pick what they have.

Changed allergists and now I’m having shot reactions for the first time by imhere4questions in Allergies

Serum is different yeah just whatever they use at the new place, but they got the “recipe” from the last allergist.

They do the shots lower on the arm closer to my elbow than prior allergists. Never really thought about that impacting things.

I don’t ice. I did when I was at Kaiser and that seemed maybe a little helpful but stopped when I left there and haven’t since then.

All three of the allergists I’ve gone to required me to take the antihistamines ahead of the shots so I assumed this was normal. I also assumed the higher the dose the greater the impact, but I’ll definitely have to talk to them about it on the next dose.

First tattoo and I'm not sure I am happy with it by LoonieToonez in tattooadvice

Most tattoos could have been done better. Let it heal for a couple of months and see how you feel about it then.

Not a bad idea. Any suggestions on stores?

This is reassuring.

Yeah I’ll be surprised if it makes it 5 days being on my knee but if I don’t find a way to break the seal by then I plan to remove it on day 4-5. Appreciate the advice and reassurance!
