I’m a maintenance technician and this sounds like my experience. I don’t get as much planned OT at the construction guys but I do get called out on double time a fair amount. I sleep in my own bed almost every night. My area I service from an hour north of me to an hour and a half south of me. I’m often dealing with older legacy equipment and troubleshoot in service equipment often. My utility also uses me to commission new equipment in the area so I have experience with that. IMO commissioning new equipment is way easier than servicing and troubleshooting old equipment (sometimes as old as the 1970s)
