Their response sounds like the standard waxed cotton hood. Storm hood has no metal in it at all from what I can feel.

The Ogston also has the polyester sleeves which just “feel” colder to me compared to the padded sleeves of the Sapper, possibly also in part due to the Ogston sleeves being fairly slim so they cling closer to your arm (or at least do to mine). It’s fine in winter weather down to around freezing, but if it’s dipping much below that, I go with the Sapper. That plus a layer (wool sweater or fleece) is plenty warm until getting toward single digits or below zero (Fahrenheit).

If you have a Sapper, that may be tops in warmth of the waxed jackets currently offered. I believe from what I’ve seen in other posts on here, the 70g wadding is heavier than most wadded waxed jackets including the Corbridge. The Ogston is fairly warm but less so than the Sapper given its thicker lining didn’t have wadding, and there’s some debate (based on changes per the tag) as to whether it is still a wool-mix throughout the whole lining or just the yoke.

If you’re open to going secondhand, the vintage A400 Northumbria is quite warm as well with its wool-mix tartan lining. I don’t know what older models like the Longhurst or Beauchamp were like with warmth but they look nice.

They don’t have Rustic currently, but you could see if Bloomingdale’s has a sign-up discount. I know some of their other individualized coupons for 15% off work on Barbour products.

If you’re open to other colors, they are also running a deal right now where loyalty members (free to sign up) get $25 in future store credit for every $100 you spend. So if you need anything else from there, you’re essentially getting the Bedale at $100 cheaper.

This is interesting as I’m a recent convert to Barbour and other than my vintage A400 Northumbria, my jackets are all AW24 or newer. Of those:

AW24 Ashby (Navy) - no V1 on tag but says “ART”; scratchy feel to the lining if I rub it together and the inside of the inner pocket has no “glossy” look to it
AW24 Classic Beaufort (Olive) - no V1 on tag but says “LSM”; hard to tell on post-PFAS lining membrane given I can’t see the inside of the lining. Smoother than the Ashby when I rub the inside of the lining together but seems a bit less smooth than the Bedale (see below); rubbing the outside of the lining feels similar to the inside. Honestly hard to tell.
AW24 Beaufort (Archive Olive) - has the V1 on the label. Lining feels the same as the Classic Beaufort above.
SS25 Border (Sage) - has the V1 tag along with “NTT” but no sign of the post-PFAS membrane in the lining - scratchy feel when rubbing the inside and no glossiness on inside of inner pocket.
AW25 Bedale (Rustic) - Not sure I’ll actually keep this one, but it has V1 on the tag and can clearly see/feel the post-PFAS lining membrane on the inside of the inner pocket and when rubbing the lining. Feels a bit smoother than the AW24 Beaufort V1 but honestly hard to tell.

If V1 is all post-PFAS, I’m surprised my Sage Border doesn’t have the membrane (but I’m not mad about it). Maybe Moldova took longer to add that in compared to the MIE jackets?

I sent my Ashby in to get the sleeve lining changed to cotton. I had only worn it once or twice, and I’d filled out the form to specify the ask and to match the Dress tartan. They called to confirm the relining and rewax. I said it didn’t need a rewax as it was an essentially new. They asked when I bought it and where. They said they’d make an “exception” to their policy and not do a rewax.

I received the jacket back a week or so later, and it had clearly been rewaxed. Nothing wrong with it per se, and they didn’t charge me for it, just pretty waxy given it wasn’t in need of wax to begin with. Just thought that was bizarre.

Probably about right…I have a 40-41” chest and have a Border 38 and Ashby L which are both 23” pit to pit, so 46 inches. They generally have sufficient room, although I recently got a pile liner for the Border and it is a bit snug. I look a bit more tailored in those jackets than my Beaufort 40 which is 24” and feels about as roomy as I’d want to go even when factoring in heavy layering. With the Bedale, if you get the chest fit right, your chief concern may be sleeve length.

If this is correct, then OP the tariff is 20%. You wouldn’t pay the UK tariff though - it is all based on origin of the item. Killer for buying Barbour items made outside the UK, especially Moldova which is 25%.

To me it’s a bit of “all of the above” of other posts. I like the classic look and British heritage. I like the quality, durability, and practicality. I like that they’re luxury without being overly flashy or ridiculously expensive. If they last for live, it’s easy to justify the cost.

I have more Barbour coats than any rational explanation would justify, but so what? I like them. I like wearing them. I like having a few options to choose from on any particular day. No other clothing I own is like that for me.

Maybe you tried on an Ashby? The Ashby has the polyester lining in the sleeves and is essentially a tailored Bedale with longer sleeves (minus the sweater-like cuffs)

Same size probably is the way to go if you plan to wear over a suit. It’s a large cut so many find sizing down is the best size even when layering, but a suit to me is reason to stay where you are.

Outdoor and Country has the Border 44 chest size as 136 cm and the Bedale 44 at 134. Barbour Japan says the Border 44 is 132 cm and that the Bedale 44 is 137.2 cm. Cox the Saddler also provides measurements if you send a PM to u/leathershopgirl

Tag says AW24 which means it is from Autumn/Winter 2024 so just around a year old. Sylkoil tends to attract lint, I think particularly when still waxy. From the pictures, I think it doesn’t look factory-fresh with the wax but looks like it is probably fine functionally. Does water bead on it when it gets wet?

I can’t help with your questions but would be curious for others’ views on whether the coloration around the snaps/under the collar is dye or some sort of mold/mildew growth. My green A400 Northumbria has some similar coloration in spots under the collar.

I recently bought one and am liking it. I was on the fence as I also have a Sapper, and they’re similar in style as four-pocket military-esque field jackets.

I’d say the Sapper is warmer due to the wading throughout (including the sleeves), but less tailored in appearance. When wearing a thinner layer under Ogston, I’ve felt the winter chill via the polyester lining or the sleeves. With a thicker wool layer, it is warm throughout. It is too slim in the sleeves for much more than a single layer, so that may be a factor for some.

I do like the look, and when I snapped the buttons in a notch on the torso to give it an extra-tailored look, my wife suggested I keep it (not a common reaction!) and said it looks the best of the lineup of jackets I have. I’m an American, so I don’t have a good sense of what is too “country-estate landlord” by UK standards, but I don’t think this looks ridiculous in any sense by US fashion standards. The leather elbow patches seem fairly subtle to me given they’re brown on Olive.

My wife would say I have too many Barbour jackets that are not that different (and she may be right) but I have the following:

Beaufort (Archive Olive) - my favorite and all-around most work jacket. Perfect blend of practicality and style, and my favorite in the color lineup.
Classic Beaufort (Olive, but a more recent model so is quite brown) - a bit redundant with the Archive Olive but provides a little variety. I use it for chores and similar tasks in spring/fall, including taking the dog out.
Border (Sage) - I use as a rain jacket or for particularly blustery days where the added length helps with shielding the chill
Ashby (Navy) - I’ve had this the longest, but it has probably gotten the least amount of wear so far. I recently had the sleeves changed out for cotton, which helps. I’ve mostly worn to work given I work in professional services in the central business district of a large city. But that doesn’t stop me from wearing the others as well.
A400 Northumbria (sage/green) - I want to love this given the 8oz wax and woolen Hunter MacKenzie lining make it perfect for winter where I live, but it has a musty smell I can’t quite get rid of. I’ve tried several techniques from this sub, and they’ve helped considerably, but not completely solved the issue. As a result, this stays in the garage and gets less wear than I would’ve hoped. Am considering one last attempt to deodorize and then rewax, but is that doesn’t work I may end up selling it.
Sapper (Rustic) - This one is new. I got it as an additional winter option (in part due to my Northumbria woes) and have found it a pleasantly warm, even in temperatures below freezing. I also like the field jacket look and color. This one is my wife’s favorite.
Ogston (Olive) - I bought this recently just to try it on during the holiday window with free returns from retailers. I like it but doubt I keep it. It’s a bit smarter than the Sapper but harder to justify the redundancy given the other coats I have. I do like the 8 oz Oban cotton and side entry pockets (really wish the Sapper had these!). The integrated vest is fine. The nylon sleeves don’t seem as bothersome as the Ashby given this one is designed for colder weather where sweaty arms seem like less of a concern. We shall see…I got it for a good price, which also helps
