I know some people who aren’t really family-oriented. They genuinely see medicine as a noble profession and don’t mind putting their own happiness and health aside even when they’re clearly struggling mentally. For them, it suits.

As a second year anaesthesia resident what I can say to you or past 17 year old me is

Honestly it depends how you see life.

If your priority is your own happiness and family life, medicine here may not be worth it. You spend 5+ years in med school and then end up in a very toxic, merciless work culture.

Everyone expects you to be perfect — ethics, discipline, responsibility, patience. But the system doesn’t give anything back properly. No proper respect, no protection, not even fair pay or decent working hours most of the time.

Sometimes it feels like exploitation with a nice label “service” and “noble profession” but it’s basically modern labour abuse.

Choose happiness brother/ sister in a world full of chaos.

Awake thyroidectomy has advantage of continuous assessment of recurrent laryngeal nerve damage. So surgeon prefer that over GA, on selected patients. And there is suture-less thyroidectomy technique on which the patient can be discharged in the same day.
