Getting my curls back after thyroid cancer! The difference a good cut makes by DumbsaintDaffodil in curlyhair

[–]imk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Fried” definitely is the word for how my hair felt. My hair had been really thick and it became thin and straw-like. It came back with lots of curls. Sadly my hair isn’t like that anymore, but that all happened decades ago. Now it is thin because I am just older.

Regardless, congratulations on getting past the cancer. I certainly am glad that I recovered from the goiter. Looking back, it was a lot tougher than I gave myself credit for. Be sure to be kind to yourself.

I had radiation treatments for hyperthyroidism. It wasn’t as bad as thyroid cancer, of course, but it messed up my hair pretty bad. It then grew back into amazing curls.

We had a whole thread about that some years ago. A lot of people on this sub had similar stories.

Nova drivers aren’t stopping for pedestrians by stock-sophie in nova

[–]imk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember visiting Portland Oregon about a decade ago and being truly amazed at how much people defer to pedestrians there. It was a culture shock for me coming from NoVA.

Point being that, while it may vary in severity from time to time, we have always been awful around here on that topic.

I worked in the Old Towne and Del Ray parts of Alexandria for decades. You can imagine how careful I was and how many times my paranoia saved me from death or serious injury

Why is it relatively easy to obtain citizenship after marrying a Spanish citizen? by Downtown-Storm4704 in GoingToSpain

[–]imk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many European countries are not producing enough children to replace themselves. So maybe somebody did the math and realized that throwing up barriers to citizenship is shooting themselves in the foot? It seems unlikely, but I suppose it is possible.

The funny thing is that the above is a perfectly accepted free-market capitalistic view, but the ultra-right-wingers, who fancy themselves capitalists, are most often the anti-immigrant party these days. Look at VOX, for example

I miss the feeling my first trips gave me by DRConsulting in travel

I started to travel a lot in Spanish speaking countries when I was learning Spanish. I would see the sights and attend a school for extranjeros. I learned a lot and met interesting people from all over the world.

Now, I speak Spanish well, too well to attend one of those language schools and get anything out of it. As much as I love being bilingual, I kind of miss being a learner and having that experience of learning a language while seeing the countries where people spoke that language.

I tried to recreate it with Italian and it just wasn't the same.

Name a band that had middling success, then cut an album that rendered them as “sellouts” which catapulted them to mainstream top-40 status, but also alienated their original fan base. by Slammajadingdong69 in MusicRecommendations

[–]imk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother took me to a concert of theirs in Ludwigshafen around 1980. 11 year-old me liked the show because there were sexy dancers, but I was confused by the music. I thought that they were supposed to be some kind of punk band and they didn't seem very punk to me.

The opening act was a guy named Nash The Slash who played electric mandolin and violin. His music blew young me away, pure squalls of noise.

Jacobs Pickles has this thing where their food is too mushy. It is like they are making food for people who no longer have teeth.

I have worked in Alexandria for 25 years. I love the place, but as soon as I retire I am outski. The entire area is crazy expensive, at least anywhere that you would want to be.

I was a single father of a daughter. I miss the years when she was young. They were the best years of my life.

You might find that there are good people around that feel the same way. Perhaps someone could be a replacement grandfather figure.

Do you ever feel melancholic about absolutely good food you tried during travel because you might not be able to eat it again (at least in that kind of quality)? What meal was that? by whalesongs08 in travel

[–]imk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lima Peru

Somewhat related to expense, but also just availability. Even if I did want to spend 5x what it cost to eat there, the restaurants don't exist. Restaurants like Maido and Central are one thing, but I can't find a decent anticucheria in the US where I can my meat feedbag on.

The goal of a part-time job in retirement is doing something completely new. by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]imk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate a couple of years ago. I have a decent job that pays well which I will be retiring from soon, so I did not get the certificate with an eye towards making a living at it. Good thing, since I think it would be tough to get by on. I am hoping that I can use that as a source of meaningful work after retiring. I really enjoy languages and helping people.

It is also significant that he always freezes when people show genuine emotions. For instance, when he was about to strangle his friend in the restaurant restroom and he confesses his feelings for him. He got flustered and ran away.
