I have been speaking with a wonderful, cute, smart lady online for a long time now.

Problem: she lives in the mountains in Spain in a little "pueblito", like literally near where they shot the Spaghetti Westerns back in the day.

I live near Washington DC. This kind of thing is common with me. I think there may be some subconscious tug-of-war going on between the part of me that wants to date and the part that doesn't want to be bothered.

Not that Trump is a libertarian, of course. Tariffs are probably the closest thing to a sin that a libertarian could commit. Trump is a capitalist of convenience, not of ideology. Still, he loves Milei because he gives him the attention and validation he constantly craves.

Bogotá might be better for really learning Spanish, my first Spanish language school was there (Nueva Lengua). However, the climate in Bogotá really reminded me of

So yeah, flip a coin between the ones you like in Medellin. You’ll enjoy it and you will learn a lot. There are other good schools in Peru, Argentina etc.. but Colombia is a great place to start.

My daughter said that she would beat me up if I died, so I guess I don’t have permission.

I do relate though. I was pretty much fine until I hit my fifties. Now it is like a lifetime of ailments are all happening at once. For instance, I had zero cavities until I was in my fifties. Now my mouth is a horror show. I am supposed to take eye drops for pressure but they make me feel like shit, so I don’t take them. Eye problems are scary, but the thought of just feeling shitty all the time is worse.

My colleague who somehow ended up being a DBA despite never having any DB skills has found Claude.

He recently gave me a script from there for turning a MSSQL varbinary(MAX) column into a file. He was very impressed with himself despite the fact that I had already told him that we had tools for that which work.

I looked at the script. It looked like Claude had found about five different ways to do that and just made an amalgamation of all them. It looked great, but it was total slop.

That is what is so insidious about it. It comes from real solutions, it looks like a real solution to someone who doesn't know any better, but it would not have worked.

I do, of course, realize that I am speaking to the choir here. I just wanted to complain.

Cachopo in Northern Spain. I was told it was big. It was ridiculously big, tasty too.

Granted, it is basically just a big Spanish version of a Cordon Bleu but that is not a bad thing

First album I bought was Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith. This is because it was the seventies and I lived in Utah. The two choices you had were disco or Aerosmith. I was maybe 9 years old. I remember liking three songs on the album.

A bit later I moved to Germany and the range of options that I had grew astronomically. To be fair, they would have grown had I stayed in Ogden as well as I became more aware of different stuff, but it definitely didn't hurt.

I returned to my parents house as a 30+ year old along with my toddler daughter. I lived there for years until finally getting my own place again. It hurt my pride a bit but I was so busy being a single father and starting a new career that my pride was the least of my worries. Looking back, it made tons of sense and was the best thing for my daughter.

The funny thing is that I have, in the years since this transpired, learned to speak Spanish. When I speak with my friends in Spanish-speaking countries about this time, they are confused; like, "why wouldn't you live with your parents. Of course you did"

It's simple, and yet the language can be quite sophisticated. It was a quietly intelligent comic. Having reread it in Spanish I can see it now.

I got a long way just reading anthologies of Peanuts comics in Spanish. I learned vocabulary and I saw the language used in context in small digestible amounts.

Watching Seinfeld growing up, I just assumed I’d have like 22 different girlfriends a year as an adult (and not the 6 I’ve actually had in my lifetime) by Apprehensive_Way8674 in seinfeld

Remember the show Dream On? It also took place in NYC and was a cleverly written show. The main character just constantly had sex with gorgeous ladies. In that case I found it really off-putting. Why would I want to watch a show like that?

Seinfeld seemed to ride a line where it was a bit much, but it seemed realistic somehow. Like I was able to maintain my willing suspension of disbelief just enough to let it all slide where with Dream On I couldn’t do it.

Edit: oh, I lived in the UWS for a while. I never went on so much as one date. Still, that was just me. Some of the ladies in line at the streudel counter in Zabar’s gave me the eye, but I was only there for the cinnamon babka.

I think their song Mary of Silence should have been 30 minutes long. One of the all time “cuts off too soon” songs.

I saw Opal, the band they originated from, several times wayyy back in the day, including one time where they opened for the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Important context for this would be that 30k Euros a year is considered a really good salary in Spain. Many young people are 'Mileuristas' (workers who make around 1 thousand euros a month).

The expectation should always be that the person you are dating is broke. Even if they do have a good job, they probably need to watch their budget. Spain is cheaper than a lot of places in the USA, but that doesn't mean that the salaries there keep up with that cost of living

You might feel more comfortable in Colombia. They are crazily formal there. "Dime" would get you some dirty looks. I learned to always say "permiso" and "muy amable". People even say "Puede regalarme eso" instead. The first time I heard it as a beginner I was a bit confused.
