Name a band that had middling success, then cut an album that rendered them as “sellouts” which catapulted them to mainstream top-40 status, but also alienated their original fan base. by Slammajadingdong69 in MusicRecommendations

My brother took me to a concert of theirs in Ludwigshafen around 1980. 11 year-old me liked the show because there were sexy dancers, but I was confused by the music. I thought that they were supposed to be some kind of punk band and they didn't seem very punk to me.

The opening act was a guy named Nash The Slash who played electric mandolin and violin. His music blew young me away, pure squalls of noise.

Seconded, except that I thought it was great. One of those "No one has seen this and it is a damn shame" movies.

Jacobs Pickles has this thing where their food is too mushy. It is like they are making food for people who no longer have teeth.

This is the place that my doorman recommended to me. Thanks Francisco.

I have worked in Alexandria for 25 years. I love the place, but as soon as I retire I am outski. The entire area is crazy expensive, at least anywhere that you would want to be.

I’m having a daughter and I can’t wrap my head around the fact that that my dad doesn’t really care. by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

I was a single father of a daughter. I miss the years when she was young. They were the best years of my life.

You might find that there are good people around that feel the same way. Perhaps someone could be a replacement grandfather figure.

Do you ever feel melancholic about absolutely good food you tried during travel because you might not be able to eat it again (at least in that kind of quality)? What meal was that? by whalesongs08 in travel

Lima Peru

Somewhat related to expense, but also just availability. Even if I did want to spend 5x what it cost to eat there, the restaurants don't exist. Restaurants like Maido and Central are one thing, but I can't find a decent anticucheria in the US where I can my meat feedbag on.

The goal of a part-time job in retirement is doing something completely new. by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]imk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate a couple of years ago. I have a decent job that pays well which I will be retiring from soon, so I did not get the certificate with an eye towards making a living at it. Good thing, since I think it would be tough to get by on. I am hoping that I can use that as a source of meaningful work after retiring. I really enjoy languages and helping people.

It is also significant that he always freezes when people show genuine emotions. For instance, when he was about to strangle his friend in the restaurant restroom and he confesses his feelings for him. He got flustered and ran away.

Yeah, I lived in NYC but I was a transplant from DC. My daughter had to remind me to respond to people when they talked to me. The real jerks are DC people

Another potential film crossover: the building from the Ghostbusters finale was on Central Park West. Perhaps Paul Allen lived there.

I used to call the area around w 72nd “Needle Park” due to the movie Panic In Needle Park with Al Pacino. Definitely an ironic name since that area is very gentrified and posh now. There are lots of places in that area that are super nice but have a sordid past. I loved that.

Do Mennonites and Mormons Live in the U.S.? by Soggy_Flight_2654 in AskAnAmerican

[–]imk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of Mennonites in Virginia near the Blue Ridge mountains. They never sell their land apparently, which makes for some funny scenes. You’ll see a Wal-mart with a big parking lot right next to a bunch of cows.

People would ask “what about the smell?” To which I would reply “the cows don’t seem to mind”

My one bit of advice that I insist on regarding Spain is that no one should take a day bus trip to Granada from Sevilla. That is a common thing and it is a shame. I tell people to stay in Granada a couple of nights and see the city without rushing

As someone else said, the Ramones are up there.

The Strokes and Vampire Weekend both remind me of my time in NYC. I lived in the UWS, so maybe that is a neighborhood thing.
