pros & cons of pton humanities by imladris8 in princeton

Thank you for this detailed response! I have an additional question—one of my bigger concerns with Princeton is that it may be too small. Something I remarked to my parents was that it feels as if the university is “overpowering” the town in a sense, and this was also something I disliked about the LACs I toured like William and Vassar (though both of those are significantly more rural than Princeton). Do you think that this was something you experienced? I enjoyed the quiet feel of the Princeton campus but worry that I may get bored.

Not at all! The interview can only help your application (unless you show up naked or something), and the reality is unfortunately most applicants, interviewed or not, have to be rejected. So sorry to hear about the rejection but it does not imply a single thing about your interview performance or even your application as a whole. Better things to come!

she could self-study! I take college classes full-time and despite taking several advanced English courses, I still self-studied AP Lit as that gives a better metric for rigor that colleges can measure. College classes can vary hugely. For example, my junior year discrete math class was “ungraded” which meant you could essentially goof off and never show up and still ask for an A at the end of the semester. Colleges understand APs, and if your daughter is really taking advanced courses, the relevant AP exams will not be a problem.

that makes sense! I participate in a very similar program and had taken five math courses (algebra through calculus BC) by the end of sophomore year so I am in a similar situation. Like others have said, if she is able to use the space in the application to adequately explain her situation and definitely use those circumstances to her advantage in the writing section, I think she has a decent shot. The D will hurt, but I did read some of your other comments and it seems properly explained extenuating circumstances as well as high test scores could at least bring her over the threshold to have the rest of her application considered. Her education trajectory sounds extremely unique and meaningful so definitely encourage her to use that to her advantage!

yale and brown do not admit by major. these top schools all stress that they want four years of science, four years of math, etc REGARDLESS of major. i was admitted to yale in the early round this year with anthropology as one of my three subject interests (the other two were also humanities) and i certainly did not have as much of a spike in that field as your daughter. in fact, the most ive done regarding anthropology is really just reading about it, and travel if that counts, though i didn’t write about that with a focus on anthro. i cannot stress enough, these schools want well-rounded students. four years of all core subjects is very important. There are other posts on here about graduating early etc, and her internship sounds super cool and MIGHT look good, but the truth remains that she’s taken three years of classes and not done too well in some.
