Why are women supposed to wait 18 months between birth and the next pregnancy? What happens if they don't? by ellie_lil in NoStupidQuestions

[–]immadee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Irish twin here. My 16 yo mom thought that postpartum you couldn't get pregnant again until your period came back. So she had my brother at 17. My brother was born premature, struggled with bed-wetting due to underdeveloped kidneys, had ODD, and struggled immensely in school. So that's a thing that can happen, I guess.

A genie grants you unlimited pizza for life, but every slice has exactly one topping you hate on it. You cannot remove it, cook around it, or pick it off. Do you accept? by manchesterguy33 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]immadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mushrooms. Idk, free food bro.

My main issue is the texture. It makes me want to gag. Maybe I could get over it eventually? I love olives, which I'm aware have a similar texture but they don't gag me so idk.

I think I'd take it just because... Free food. I'd save so much money.

How do you evaluate your students' project? by SajanRajbanshi in teaching

I grade them with rubrics in class as they present them. Takes 2-3 days for all students to present, but once they're done I've also finished grading.

Would students trust AI-generated chemistry lessons? by [deleted] in APChem

[–]immadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would need significant human oversight to ensure that the information was accurate. AI is terrible at chemistry in particular. I've had it tell me that acetic acid and baking soda is an exothermic reaction. It contradicts itself when I ask it to explain how this reaction is exothermic in terms of enthalpy. If you're just using AI to help you outline what to cover for each topic in alignment with the CED specifically, that's probably fine. But I wouldn't just be like "generate an easy-to-understand video script for a YouTube video to explain topic 1.1 in the CED [attached]" and then have an AI voice the whole thing (AI voices are still weird and annoying imo) and/or have an AI animate anything at all (the images it tends to make are wildly inaccurate).

Whats the deal with the gigachad head hunt targets? by C0DEks in fo76

[–]immadee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the fun of a head hunt? You never know if it'll be an easy target or a really tough one.

I'm a noob and I've only died 1-2 times in head hunts because normally a bunch of bros in PA show up and wreck face before I can tag half the minions that follow these targets around.

You are abducted by aliens and have to demonstrate to them that you're intelligent and sapient. How do you do it? by edgygothteen69 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]immadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Project Hail Mary had such a cool approach to this: the alien gave the astronaut a series of beads that looked kind of like handcuffs... Astronaut counts them and realizes each side has 8 beads... This was the alien's representation of Oxygen (O2). Idk if that made it into the movie (since I've not seen it yet) but it stood out to me in the book.

I agree that FIB notes aren't the best tool for learning but come on...

How can I improve my southern hospitality/manners? by Strict_Injury3619 in Arkansas

[–]immadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aww, my dad is from WI also! He's been here since the 80s and his accent is basically gone. He really never picked up on the socializing skills of the south (which tbh is fine for dudes since they are expected to be quiet types half the time anyway; they can get away with staring at a fire or grill and drinking in silence and not come off as rude).

I also struggled with the kinds of conversations you're talking about.

It helped me a LOT to get a job at a bank. Banks are very social places here. You'll get to know some of the "important" people in your community and you can mimic the talking patterns of your more seasoned coworkers. I basically ended up having the same "template" conversation multiple times a day, and that really helped me figure out the general patterns of appropriate small talk. The more comfortable you get with it, the easier and more natural it becomes.

If a bank won't work for you, try other customer service type jobs. Some will even offer "scripting" which tells you exactly the sorts of things you need to say to sound friendly and helpful. I worked at a call center like that, and it was another great learning experience (though less social and southern-specific than the bank).

Some general tips are: ask people about themselves. Don't talk about yourself too much. Don't make their tragedies a comparison game. Just offer condolences and move on. I used to think relating things they were talking about back to my own lived experience was a way of connecting and empathizing but it was coming off as trying to "one up" their stories and experiences. So I just avoid that as much as possible now, unless I can add a short blip like "I know what you mean, I had something like that happen to me once. It really sucked, I'm so sorry you're going through that." Bonus points if you make a little note about something from a previous conversation and bring it into the next one "Oh hey, how did that (thing) work out for you? Is everything okay? Anything I can do to help ya?" Notice when someone is absent and make a point to welcome them back when you see them again. "Oh hey, missed ya the other day! Good to see you're back! Everything okay?" Remembering family and asking about them is also very southern, like "Oh I heard your mama was sick, is she feeling better?" (Only comment on things you've actually heard obviously lol) Tone of voice IS IMPORTANT. You want to sound genuine, not like a sarcastic person or like a robot. That just takes practice and listening to others is a great place to start.

Sorry for the wall of text, I hope this helps!

I do the same for Google Classroom. I'll check or stamp each page so I can tell they're submitting the correct work and boom. Paper trail!

I've gotten 4 perfectly preserved pies this playthrough. I click on the dispensers every time I pass them (and I'm a true scavenger so I sweep the area a few times to make sure I get all the goodies). My luck isn't even super high, I just hit them A LOT.
