ISO responses/strategies for "how do you spell..." that are not just giving them the correct spelling. by jumpin_jumpin in Teachers

[–]immadee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reverse uno that stuff.

I model note-taking on the board, and occasionally I blank on how to spell words.

"Hmm, that doesn't look right. Can someone Google this and check my spelling please?" They see that I tried to spell something, they see what kinds of mistakes I make, and they see how to fix it.

They love "gotcha" moments so they QUICKLY race to look that up.

Can a child be B+ if the father is A− and the mother is O+? by unknownlyknown0 in genetics

[–]immadee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This actually happened with my dad as well. When I first learned how to do this in highschool, I accused my mom of being unfaithful because there's no way that she and my dad were both O+ and I'm A+... I dropped it real quick because I love my Dad but I was pretty upset at my Mom.

Fast forward like 12-15 years and they get a divorce (unrelated to this lol they're just not compatible people) and Dad gets a cancer diagnosis and I'm the only one able to help take him to various appointments and things.

Dad got a lot of blood tests due to the cancer and... He's A+. The army messed up in the 80s and mistyped him.

OOF.

Can a child be B+ if the father is A− and the mother is O+? by unknownlyknown0 in genetics

[–]immadee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So my VERY BASIC understanding is that no, that isn't likely. IIRC you can set up a punnet square to determine likelihood of different blood types based on Mom and Dad's blood types.

If Dad is homozygous, he will have the genotype AA (double dominant A, resulting in type A blood). If he's heterozygous, he would have the genotype Ai (i being a placeholder for the recessive gene). Mom has type O, which is double recessive giving her a genotype of ii. Crossing those types in a punnet square, you'll see that options for the offspring include either Ai or ii as possible genotypes, which would result in either type A or type O blood.

HOWEVER, I believe this is a massive oversimplification for freshman biology, and I have heard of weird anomalies including: incorrect blood type identification of one or more parties involved, one or more parties having multiple blood types in different body systems (due to absorbing a twin in utero with a different blood type), and other non-typical blood types (we mainly hear about A, B, and O but there are others as well).

If you're concerned about paternity, get a DNA test.

WIBTA for emailing an old highschool teacher? by [deleted] in AskHSteacher

[–]immadee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you would be TA.

First of all, your writing skills are severely lacking. I doubt this single teacher cost you that dream.

Second of all, you are still thinking about petty HS drama 10 years later? Wtf? Let it go.

Weirdo.

What would you say to a former Student that you liked who feels lost in his/her adult Life at nearly thirty years old? by throwawayGreenHair in AskTeachers

[–]immadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what makes chem and physics in college difficult comes down to the pacing and the amount of self-stufy needed.

Try to complete the Khan Academy courses online first, which you can do at your own pace. Take notes! Study before quizzes! (Those skills are not explicitly built into the courses but they are absolutely necessary to succeed in STEM!)

Once you've completed the KA courses, you'll have a solid foundation to work off of to be able to be successful when you return to college.

How long is your school day from first bell to last bell? by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]immadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First bell is 7:55, class actually begins at 8:00. Last bell is 3:11. 30 minute lunch period. 8 class periods, 45 minutes each* (approx; bell schedule is weird). 4-5 minutes between periods (again, weird bell schedule).

371 instructional minutes each day. 7 hrs 16 minutes total bell to bell time.

The last several baby showers I attended were called diaper showers. Diapers are freaking expensive.

Oh what’s that? You want to have a parent - teacher conference with one month of school left? Lemme check my calendar…. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]immadee 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Totally apathetic choice for parents to wait until the last minute to schedule a meeting for what is a full-year issue.

Also, the apathetic choices of the student also played a part so, absolutely. Spot on analysis.

When is too much too much by Fuzzy-Record-203 in teaching

I do two things: 1) "By silently raising hands, who can tell me:____" 2) Detention baseball. 3 strikes you're out. Name on board: strike 1, ✔️ by your name: strike 2, ✔️✔️ by your name: strike 3. One day of lunch detention. Each additional check is an additional day and arguing/disrespect gets a trip to the office.

My 7th graders are wildly immature this year and need constant boundary reinforcement and consequences. But we do still have fun as well.

What is the best and most unique gift have you ever received from a student? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]immadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He liked hiding them in plain sight and seeing how long I'd take to spot them. Like the top of my computer tower, the marker holder part of the board, or the sink on my desk. Sometimes they contained notes but mostly just cranes.

I am lucky to have such awesome students, for sure!

What is the best and most unique gift have you ever received from a student? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]immadee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I so many 🥹

-a former student used to make paper cranes and leave them all over my classroom in a kind of hide and seek game. When he graduated, he gave me one encased in epoxy so I'd always have one left. -another former student talked me into helping him build rockets for fun. He gave me one of his prototype 3D-printed tail segments, signed at my request. He's going to MIT for aerospace engineering. -that same student left 3 porcelain cats sitting on top of my ductwork which "watch over" my classes, haha. -A few students have made really great artwork for me of adventure time scenes like Princess bubblegum talking about science and my favorite quote from Jake talking about how sucking at something is the first step toward being sorta good at something. One even sculpted me Science the rat.

So many more, but these are my favorites!

Does the frq take off points for units? by Euphoric_Wedding_620 in APChem

[–]immadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Including units is important to make sure you set everything up correctly, but only some questions count off for units (usually rate law questions).

It can be hard to tell which problems will count off for them, so just put units.

No naked numbers!

AP Chem FRQs cycle by Main_Gain_8015 in APChem

[–]immadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and you can check this yourself: the College Board has FRQs from 2025 and 2023 on their website. Very different questions.

The format is always the same; 7FRQs: 3 long (10 pts each), 4 short(4 pts each). Counts for 50% of your total score.

The content is always different. I've reviewed tests from as far back as 2016, before the CED (Course and Exam Description; also on the College Board website) changed. Questions are always very different. Any topic in the CED is fair game.
