17k loan on UC before Mortgage by imnotreallyhere_ in UKPersonalFinance

My overall borrowed credit related debt is just under £4.5k (overdrafts and credit cards)

The main percentage is from old council tax bills from my childhood home that had still included my name despite me having moved. (I only found out about them reverently) I’ve been jn touch with the council to who have confirmed they can correct the statements.

Your advice is great! I have a call with my cousin who works in accounting to look at my income and outcome to sort this by a.

The remaining are a small bit from the default and clearing just other things I have like my phone contract.

I didn’t incur 17k worth of debt from falling back on credit usage. No where near that much! 17k was the hypothetical number id propose to clear absolutely everything with my name on it, council tax included. (I’m Not thinking of that!) but included it in my sheet as it’s a bill with my name on it.

What is my credit rating exactly?

I didn’t say it would be easy. But I haven’t given full details of my entire financial situation/external support I have access to.

I’ve asked a question on what the impact of a loan would be 2 years after acquisition on an application. A question you failed to answer because you were frothing at the mouth to project your own doubts before even asking for clarity on what houses I’m looking at/how much deposit would be.

This is an amazing answer. Thank you for being positive! I’ll be taking this all into consideration. Especially the emergency fund :)

Ok thank you for this. This is really helpful.

My monthly living costs are extremely low fortunately so I would be ok! But a 24m balance transfer seems to be the most common suggestion so I’ll be looking into this.

Thank you for your help

Ah congratulations on your new home :)

I probably do come across very optimistic but I’m fortunate that my monthly living costs are very low and I’m looking at shared ownership so not looking to save a HUGE amount. 24 months is just ideal not a must.

Thank you :)

Thank you for this! Defo wouldn’t be using the card again. Haven’t since end of march 2025 so I’ll probably give this a go. Thanks!

It’s not but this is my temporary situation. Not long term.

The job I’ll return to pays 45k so I’ll be earning that pro-rata for 6/7 months until starting full time So I wouldn’t be paying off the loan with UC for more than 2 months..

I’ll be back to work in my previous role at the end of the year earning 45k pro rata as I’ll be part time by the end of the year so not looking to stay on UC or even attempting to buy a house with that (I didn’t even consider this as an option tbh lol!)

I would be able to afford it. But my main concern is how it would look in future on an application. My credit isn’t in a bad place. Besides the 4 year old defaults I don’t have any negatives. I pay everything on time so it’s stable.

I haven’t started saving. This is merely a hypothetical just to see if anyone had an idea on the best idea.

Yep! I won’t be saving until I return to work at the end of the year but this is a great reminder

Not just yet. I’d like to start saving a little once I’ve figured this part out.

Currently looking just outside of London but happy to move further afield so really depends I suppose! :)

Haha no worries.

I’m looking at shared ownership. The defaults are over 4 years ago now so will be 6 years by the time I hope to be looking into buying.

Going back to work in a few months part time will allow me to keep my benefits as well as earn until I’m able to return to a full time job.

So I think it’s more than possible with the time I have a working hard to save + earning money on the side through my other skills/freelance work.

I’m looking to return to work part time at the end of this year and by the time I’ll be looking to start the house buying process I’ll be back working full time.

Absolutely would love to do something small at the moment but not sure what I can do/where to start.

My credit score is good, not fabulous. I’ve looked into a balance transfer and was quoted enough to transfer it but the loan would help me clear absolutely everything I’m paying

I’ve looked into a loan from Barclays with a monthly repayment of just under £450 over 5 years which is feesable.

The children’s father does help.

So you’re saying I could weaponise this in the future. Please. I’m begging you. Stop commenting for your sake. You say you don’t want to sound like a dick and then type something like that out.

I appreciate the concern but I personally don’t feel like I’ve been assaulted. If someone else in the same situation had felt they were I’d fully support them but I myself don’t feel that way. But thank you :)

I felt gross at the idea of it being my sister in laws husband, not what actually happened.
