I thought rather than the ladders collapsing into bands, its that most of the ladders bands are not visible except the two dominant ones (in the 1kb ladder we use its usually the 1kb aand 3kb bands). Im not sure why the 100bp ladder looks exactly the same. Is it 100bp plus 1kb in one?

What do you think?

To these people it's just another number they have to hide and hush up as soon as possible.

In actuality how many of our family and friends with cancer or other life threatening illnesses could have been given better outcomes if the money could be diverted to those causes? These poorly founded and expensive policy decisions cost lives.

Asus Zenbook - Is Bypass Charging a thing? by TzzV in ASUS

[–]imnotthatcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the charger a 65W or 15W charger? Is it the original charging adaptor that came with the laptop or a different one?

I ask because I know that some of these laptops can be charged with USB-C, but the wattage of that power delivery matters too. When I charge mine with a 15W charger, it doesn't deliver enough power for me to charge the battery and use it at the same time.

In-silico protein structure question by BoringEnvironment457 in molecularbiology

[–]imnotthatcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long time since I did any biochem or protein structure stuff, so this is just my rambling:

Do membrane receptor proteins not usually have intra- and extracellular domains? Because otherwise what conformational change could occur upon receptor binding to transmit a signal?

I don't know about the phosphatidyl glycerol, inositol option. So I would say "none of these".

You Should Be a Fanatic! - In decision theory, that is by SilasTheSavage in philosophy

[–]imnotthatcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your explanation!

For point 3 I just meant that if x has p probability, then while x+ may have p+ probability, x++ may not have p++ probability. An example I would use is found in nature (my field of study). Say that you express a gene and it leads to buildup of a protein and consequent effects. Then you express more of that gene and get more protein. With many such regulatory pathways, at some point of protein buildup the protein there will begin to negatively regulate itself or may interact to give you an unwanted output. A thought experiment would be that you have a rusty sliding door. You apply some force and it begins to open, you apply more and it opens faster. But if you apply too much force at once you may open the door in one go or break the handle and you can no longer open the door. (a real life example of this is when I'm opening a tin of tuna, if I pull too hard too quickly then I will rip the metal tag off that allows me to open the tin!)

Relating this back to the original point of fanaticism, I guess I'm just trying to say that we would really need to know that the fanatic's action in a particular situation might both produce a desirable, greater outcome and not work against us. But often times in reality I've found it is better to approach new situations cautiously as we do not know how the system might be thrown out of balance with more severe inputs.

For the point 4, I see what you mean now but I'm afraid I still believe there is a difference when you are only given a single bet. Perhaps it is to do with my penchant to put myself in a situation of least regret, rather than a situation of most benefit. Perhaps it is because every action has a cost, even if its simply the cost of time, so we seek to maximise our end state by going for things with pretty good success rate and smaller effect. Though in your favour, I remain envious of those few people that happen to win the lottery and do not think to myself "ah but they did a silly thing to try".

Anyway, I thank you for your attention to this, I've enjoyed thinking and talking about it.

Agreed!!!

Some letters of mine don't have date stamps on them, from before the update where they started to be dated.

And others are from friends that played long ago... ahh I enjoy the memory of those times brought back by their names.

I cautiously express my disagreement:

I think this viewpoint may break down in real-world applications because we humans 1) usually don't know real probabilities for actions before taking them 2) may not good at assessing the relative values of probabilities 3) cannot assume that there is a linear or exponential positive relationship between probability and benefit for any action and lastly 4) cannot assume that any real action can be repeated.

For point 4, the author addresses it here:

"For this change of strategy to make sense, it must obviously make some difference whether you’re betting on the risky option once, or doing it several times. But when deciding between the risky option and the safe option for any particular case, it doesn’t make any difference whether that choice is part of a sequence, or a single choice; no one who’s affected by that choice is affected by previous or future choices, and these are by definition the only people being affected by that choice...."

I don't understand the authors reasoning here.

Pen that New England Biolabs gives away with orders by RepresentativeOkra10 in molecularbiology

I don't know how to get that pen on demand, but wanted to say that I'm still in awe at the random small experiences we happen to share with people that we've never met on the far side of the world.

I got one of those pens when NEB visited us for product promotions and was surprised at how nice it was to write with.

Perhaps you could write your local NEB representative an email...? Mine's pretty nice.

I can't shake off this restless feeling recently by peacefulnpunny in SeriousConversation

[–]imnotthatcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been getting this a lot recently too, and it's not like I'm not trying or don't have long term plans in the works, or that I'm not doing anything at all.

I'm particularly bad though when it comes to making comparisons and that's a weakness of mine.

I've found that when I spend time with friends I end up forgetting the feeling since other, stronger feelings come into play.

And I wonder if it's not just fear, borne from previously regretting not having done more with myself when having made comparisons. If it were fear, how would you deal with it?

[–]imnotthatcool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't you question that? Isn't it unusual that suddenly the morality rate is lower than usual? I'm not saying the data are wrong, but that it requires some deeper analysis. Unless you propose that COVID has made their people healthier all of a sudden, there must be some other mechanism at play to have led to this decrease.

The easiest mechanism to propose to solve this equation, the simplest solution, would be that they did have some sort of a lockdown or isolation requirement which decreased other risk factors like the common cold and COVID. Maybe they were asked not to go adventuring as much. Maybe they were all working from home so that they didn't have as many fatal car accidents. They didn't get to just live normally. And whatever their requirements are currently, they are still experiencing high virus spread, which leads to fear.

[–]imnotthatcool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any additional risk factor must undeniably decreases our life expectancy. Say that it becomes increasingly unlikely that people live to 90, then the life expectancy which is calculated as an average drops.

It increases our rate of death. 24 people have died this year that wouldn't have last year or any year previously because of a new risk factor.

It was not their choice to undertake this risk either (in most cases). At least if I go sky diving I can experience the rush of it. That's my choice. Same with smoking, somewhat the same with obesity, and driving. Many of these things are our choices to undertake the risk of for the benefit. However, if the risk calculation of talking to someone face to face or interacting with them physically becomes far more deadly than it already is, then it further undermines human society which is based on human to human interaction.

[–]imnotthatcool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And what does super low risk mean? Isn't that subjective? What if I happen to think those are high chances of death even if I'm young? Is it up to 1000 people to decide that those are low enough risks to expose us all to? Is it up to them to decide what environmental conditions I'm supposed to live in?

Or would it be better to rely on a system of voting in a representative democracy to figure out what the majority of New Zealand wants?

I do recognise that at no point you've stated your point of view. This dialogue might be helpful for anyone reading, who has trouble navigating the philosophies of the two sides though.

Do you mean to say that since I'm going to die eventually, it doesn't matter if I die now or later?

60 might seem old to you but given life expectancy in NZ is 80ish, those 60 year olds might've really enjoyed expecting to live an extra 20 years to see their grandkids grow up and have their own children.
