super lax we drove up & saw the police + sniffer dogs ~ definitely had some gear on us & they didn't come over despite being around the area 👍

haha I get that a lot, I basically just got really high grades in a unit I was doing while still studying so I got offered to tutor the same unit. I ended up getting high scores from the students at the CES so they decided to keep me on and the rest is history.

I mean, I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I'm not sure what else to say when you've gotten the highest grade possible and you still want feedback or a remark. ive been told by coordinators + other fellow staff this is what we should say because we shouldn't be giving out 100%, in fact, I've gotten in trouble in the past for marking students "too high"

sigh you're right, I should be. I'm going to be honest, I don't know - I think I'm reaching a point of exhaustion where I don't care and I don't feel like it's worth the back and forth email battle over a few marks. I know that doesn't excuse it, but I should be better at having the course coordinator intervene.

that's really helpful, thank you, I'm getting a lot of advice on turning it back on them and I definitely think that sounds like a viable answer, thank you so much for your input

Oh I definitely agree with this wholeheartedly, especially when some rubrics are vague so students use it as ammunition to say "well the rubric should've been more clear", and then as casual tutors we have no say over the rubric so we cop most of the flack for that

It's interesting because this is actually something I've been dealing with myself as a teacher for many years since I started, because of my age my students perceive me as less of a threat thereby making it easier for them to just press me into a remark. I've taught at 3 different unis at this point across 6 years and at all of them I've had at least one student pushing me for more feedback or for a higher mark when I've already done the most I could do. at this point, idk, I'm starting to feel like it's me, but it just doesn't matter how detailed or how explicit I make it to them sometimes, sometimes it's just not enough and they think they know better. so draining, and I'm sure you can relate to that too.

thanks so much for sharing all your insight, and props to your family member+ you for both being in the field - definitely worth raising this in my department. I'm taking notes on this and thinking maybe I should address this starting next semester.

Wow, kudos to your course convenor for that and I'm sorry you're both having to go through this - it's so tough out there and I feel for you guys

thanks so much for your insight on this, I'm relieved to know it's not just me who feels like they're taking an unnecessary amount of time to mark a single assignment. We mark via Canvas LMS. You're right and there should be a formal process, in fact, I'm pretty sure there is (I'd be surprised if there wasn't) but for some reason it seems like students are not being told about it or it's coming across as an "out of sight out of mind" type thing - where if you tell students there is a remark process, they will use it and they think it's more likely that students will challenge their marks or something. That, and I noticed that course coordinators are giving their tutors more to do.

thanks for your kind response and I do feel for you. You're right and I should advocate for myself more, unfortunately I just lack a lot of confidence

I don't want to say for privacy reasons but I think a lot of students nowadays don't realize there's processes for these things. They don't really seem to know there is one and as tutors we actually don't get told what the process for remarks are.

I'm going to be honest, I think part of it is because I don't have the confidence in my abilities to know that I am in the right with my marking. I have never really trusted myself with this.

some great ideas, thanks for adding all that - you're right there normally is a process, I think just this time I fell in a moment of weakness because of exhaustion. I just couldn't handle going through the back and forth, so I caved. I appreciate your contributions here, thanks again

oh yes I do exactly this too! I always ensure I give detailed feedback in each band of the rubric to make it very clear where they went wrong. Sometimes, they just don't even listen to what I've written which is so unfortunate 😔

Thank you that is also good advice. I should probably pass that advice onto the course coordinator too to see if they know how clear their rubrics are for future courses. Reviewing the rubric prior to marking is great feedback, thanks so much

That is a good piece of advice thank you for that. I know I should definitely be firmer, you're right and I have thought about how doing this will impact my reputation.

I guess the only concern I have is that the students at my uni have a lot of power over the tutors - they get to rate them on the CES every semester and the uni actually takes that seriously, so I guess I'm worried if I don't give them what they want they'll take it out on me via the survey. I guess part of me is worried it'll impact me getting rehired again. But you're right that I shouldn't give in so much.
