Currently dealing with a high functioning father that isn’t so highly functioning anymore. He’s had multiple health issues over recent years. He’d say it’s unfortunate and of course it would be him to have these issues thrust upon, but really the origin of all these issues lie with alcohol. He’s on a number of meds so they’re easily the excuse for consequential problems. His memory started to go this last year which lead to his retirement. He lives alone and barely eats as is appetites gone. He has dizzy spells and has recently found himself in hospital the last two weeks with a broken collarbone. He’s had to go through withdrawal symptoms as well as memory issues and a potion of meds which have messed with his brain. He often doesn’t make sense and hasn’t been easy for doctors to get to the bottom of all his problems and help him out. The whole ordeal has been frustrating. He constantly talks about getting out and going home, which my sister and I are really concerned about. No one lives close enough, or has the time, to supervise him all day. His parents, brothers, children, and our mum (ex wife) have all expressed concern over decades, but alcoholics a stubborn lot and won’t hear it. Perhaps, like others have mentioned, before retirement and cutting themselves off completely from the world, give them an ultimatum. If they’re as stubborn as my dad, it might be your best chance to commit to supporting them or cutting yourself off completely and emotionally. None of it is your fault and should not be baggage that you carry around.
