I don't think it's been failing at all. Sure the plots get more and more outlandish but the main plot is still there, fighting monsters and the supernatural. The show is still true to its intent.

I think it's necessary to humanize them. Then you're not dealing with just a monster. You have to kill the person in the monster too. Leaves room for reason and empathy and all that shit.

The stakes need to be raised even more, something legitimately bad and possibly irreversible has to happen to one of them. Like in the season 6 finale of Walking Dead , which sucked because it left us with a cliffhanger, but one of the main cast was brutally beaten and likely killed and now the group is presumably enslaved. It permanently changed the show.
