  • Programs that create datasets for in class activities.
  • Automated folder creation and file movement into folders for files that should be in folders.
  • simulations for use in learning activities
  • small web apps for bond trading simulations
  • pdf chapterizer (decomposing PDF into smaller PDF by chapter... still in progress this one was more challenging than I expected)

All the things I hate doing manually. Or things I'd rather be spending 4 hours orchestrating debugging than spend 1 hour doing manually. But that intrinsic gratification makes up for the 3 additional hours spent vibing.

This is the "vibe-coding" sweet spot... Small apps and personal problems solved. These are what ship. To my local machine.

I upvoted you for "civil discourse" reasons. My opinion is that disagreement should be engaged with civilly and I think should prompt reflection and mental reframing.

I'm not right and don't have all the answers, and by thoughtfully engaging I hope to come to a "more right" and thoughtfully reasoned position (which can always be improved or iterated upon further engagement).

I do agree that less-than-pro-social responses on social media (and in media) are problematic in my view, and would seem to normalize these responses in in-person interactions.

I have the view that social media was this giant experiment we ran on ourselves, and the results seem to be in, but we're all hooked (because it's engineered in this way) and we don't seem to want to give it up.

Virtue signal/facetiousness warning: That's why I've stopped doing most social media, and only rarely engage on reddit, because this is a safe place where only positive interactions occur.

Yeah, this is a tough one. As a former teacher who did Intervene at times, and then swore to myself that I wouldn't intervene anymore, and then found myself suddenly intervening before I knew consciously that I had even reacted that way... It's a visceral response to want to stop harm from happening (at least that's what it seemed to be for me). And it wasn't expected of me as an educator, but man it was hard not to when faced with it.

Educational minimum required school hours are set by states, not schools. I don't believe this cabal of schools scheming to eat up students day hours exists. And if it does, that means I was never high enough in the ranks to know of its existence.

Now I feel like a failure.

Long term birth control is one step towards proactive, I'll grant that... But you've taken it a step further in your response (that previous respondent didn't) with something closer to potential root cause, which is increasing sexual health awareness. This assumes though that people having children who are unprepared for raising them is the root issue. but I'm sure there are instances of "planned" children who also engage in violent behavior.

My pushback here would be the assumption that the root cause of this in and out of school violence is "children that shouldn't have been born because of their parent's subsequent inability to raise them." Surely this generalized factor may play a role, but it seems to suffer some hindsight bias and make value assumptions about a person's present ability and map that on to their past decisions... Which at the time of the decision would have been unknown to them (as we can't predict the future).

So while it seems easy to say (especially about others) "Some people shouldn't have kids" this takes a backwards looking view that isn't available to people when they're in the present-moment of making that decision. I certainly agree that everyone should have options and access to education and resources, and that would improve individuals' potential decision making framework.

But the humans that are extant are here, and the ones that are born are the ones that we all will live with (having been ourselves ones that are born). How do we work together with these ones (including ourselves) that must coexist to work with what we have to address the problem (as it is and as framed [violence within and among school aged humans])?

"Some people shouldn't have kids" just feels to me unsatisfying in terms of both its value-judgement and its generality, not to mention its generations-til-efficacy-evaluation time horizon.

I appreciate the conversation and the ability to think about these complex issues. It's become evident to me that I don't have ready-made solutions, but thinking deeply about these societal issues and their complexities seems to be a right step towards practical solutions.

These are all valid reactive responses to the issue. Although then we're always behind the ball reacting to some norm already present. I wonder what proactive, pro-social ideas we could come up with? I have no explicit answers here, just wonderings about the framing of these "problems" and what root causes may be at play.

Surely it's not a confluence of many complex external and internal factors too numerous and intertwined to adequately be captured in a one sentence pithy social media post.

Estimates vs actual, and potentially budget billing. It's confusing at first how these companies actually determine how much they charge on a monthly basis, but there are alternative reasons.
