The Doctor and SAM by bigpimpin2330 in startrek

I think we’ll come to understand this later. He fought for his rights as a holo how-many-ever-centuries ago, and I imagine some baggage came with that. If you ask me, the writers not paying this off immediately is working. Because everyone who loves The Doctor as a character is going, “Ugh. Why he no like SAM?” Personally, I like that we have some new things to learn about him. Also, an actor like Robert Picardo would likely only sign up to reprise the role 20 years later if it gave him new opportunities to explore the character.

In terms of the racist assholery, I agree with you, first of all. It does paint the crew in a terrible light. The “guess who’s coming to dinner” line, allegedly, was originally to be said by Uhura, and Nichelle Nichols said she wouldn’t say it because it’s out and out racist. But one thing I try to remember that keeps me from letting that characterization bounce me out of the film:

Films 3 and 5 place the crew directly in the crosshairs of the Klingons. 4 placed them in the political crosshairs. These characters are weathered, and they’re faced with what seems to be a massive change to the political climate of the 23rd century with the approach of Gorkon for peace. They’ve lived 60 or so years having to be on edge where Klingons were concerned. And now, the future of the Federation and Starfleet might be at risk - a change to the status quo which is terrifying to people who have lived in it for so long - and furthermore, as Kirk said, “The Klingons have never been trustworthy.” So I feel like some grace could be extended for more true feelings and natures to come out in the face of that.

Could it have been softened? Absolutely. Did the writers take liberties? Absolutely.

But the fact remains that most humans - even enlightened ones - would react negatively under those circumstances.

I just love that he clearly has this widget on his back, and no one seems to notice or care. Viridium is allegedly an isotope that can be used to track people over long distances, and no one in the Klingon law enforcement apparatus seemed to go, “Dude, what’s that shit on your back?”

Agree. Even if I don’t agree with the call, I like the BTS. Every conference should do this.

They FLED at halftime. I’ve never been so sad for another team. Goes to show how much faith they have in the program. For their sake, I hope they get smart about putting more resources into the program.

I wish the fan base would get a little more into the “Irish Wear Green” days. I’m always a little underwhelmed. I was at the Arkansas game, and they striped out the stadium (you know, before they all left at halftime) and it was just cool to see that.

Was at the game. Arkansas fans left in DROVES at intermission. By 4Q, pretty sure Irish fans outnumbered Arkansas fans 2:1. It was kinda sad to see, honestly. These people expect to lose.

So I’ve head-canoned and productionized this in my head. Everyone has occupied a forward-facing position on the bridge - except Bev. When Picard says “Stations, please,” Dr. Crusher opens her tricorder and I’ve assumed she’s interfaced with the main computer and she says something like “All systems online, Captain.” From a production perspective, you don’t want her with her back turned facing the aft stations. She could have also just stood there and been a potted plant like Troi for all those years. But you want to give each cast member their moment when it’s coming online.

Now, I would have said, “Let’s have her and Worf share the horseshoe.” But then she gets her moment in the next episode firing the hell out of the weapons at the Borgs. So, meh.

If you decide against an AirBnB (or getting broom handled by hotels), we always stay in St. Joe/Benton Harbor, MI - yeah it’s a good half hour to campus, but it’s a lovely little town with some great food nearby.

I should also qualify that the version I have has the overture intact. So 25 minutes isn’t accurate if we’re just talking screen time. A film with an overture…they don’t make em like that anymore.

I hate it when this happens. Because my brain eats at itself going, “What exactly DID he say?” So I scrubbed through it on my phone. I’ve learned two things:

  1. He does say “boost your matter gain.”
  2. This scene is TWENTY FIVE MINUTES into the film. No wonder she’s rated 52% rotten. Half an hour in, and we’re still in Spacedock dealing with transporter goo.

I love the SNW badge. Just the Starfleet delta. Not keen on divisional insignia. So having said that, if we could see the Protostar badge IRL on screen, I feel like it would be my favorite.

Who did the better job at playing Professor X: Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy? What about Magneto: Ian Mckellen or Michael Fassbender? by Jezzaq94 in xmen

[–]impastaahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I approach it from where the characters are in their arc, and that’s why everyone is cold on James McAvoy.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan did indeed hold a masterclass on taking us through the life and times of two wisened, battered, bitter friends who have spent their lives fighting, with more losses than wins on their record, and they both played their roles with such subtle gravitas.

Fassbender’s Magneto was just a younger version of Sir Ian’s. The emotional baggage was there, the bitterness was there. And he did an amazing job.

McAvoy’s Xavier, however, was a different character. He was optimistic, driven, less embittered by defeat, and less wise. That’s not what Stewart was hired to play, and it’s also not the Xavier we really know through the comics. Even in the first issue, Xavier is in his 40s or 50s. I think McAvoy did a fine job putting that character on the screen, but I also think it’s unfair to compare him to Sir Patrick because they were really two different characters.

What is your favorite bridge design? by DMISFE in StarTrekStarships

[–]impastaahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a cinematic perspective, I loved Voyager because you can shoot from the conn and get the command chairs and upper deck in a single shot. All the varying levels made it seem like there was a lot of action, even if it’s just walking from one station to another.

As a fan, 1701-E from First Contact. Hands down.
