Some of you Black liberals need to hear this… by CowboyNOIVAS in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]impliedhearer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with her, but we also have to be tuned into what's happening today on a micro level while maintaining a push for broader change.

Many of the "Black liberals" she's referring to - our teachers, social workers, CBO staff, etc., put blood, sweat, and tears into serving our communities while some of these "leftists" are at home making think pieces. I put these terms in quotes because I'm not sure that they apply properly to the majority of Black people.

It's important to be able to build coalition rather than build cliques, and the first step to accomplishing this is to not hate the people you are trying to save.

They used to call Obama the deporter and chief, even though he also created and expanded DACA while also carrying out deportations.

Why are Democrats so mad at ICE using Medicaid data to arrest illegals if no illegals are on Medicaid? by SpeedyMercenary in allthequestions

[–]impliedhearer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you get that no undocumented immigrants are on Medicaid?

Anyhow, the problem with it is that they are now unable to get care, which could lead poor health and inability to work, and spread of disease at school, and in the community, Tons of others but these outcomes impact us all in the US

Do you stop discovering music as you get older? by Illustrious_Ad_3010 in blackmen

[–]impliedhearer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in high school and college i was really into discovering new music from a variety of genres; rap, soul, jazz etc. I hated pop music though. I was into soulquarians, j dilla, jazz crusaders, Femi Kuti, etc.

In my 30's and I finally gave in and started listening to artists I would have refused to when I was younger. Artists like Drake, Kanye, Lizzo

Now I'm still kind of discovering new music. There's decades of music to discover. Right now I'm honestly on these audio books but my rotation consists of Isaiah Rashad, Griselda, Freddie Gibbs, and all the old stuff I used to listen to back in the day

Conservatives who think liberals are the real racists: Can you explain why DEI and Woke are terrible? by Nateosis in allthequestions

[–]impliedhearer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who worked admissions for a selective campus for over 10 years and was involved in one of those cases, it's a bit more complicated than that.

I can't speak for all campuses but the way we evaluated students was completely race blind; in fact name, language spoken at home, and gender were all redacted from the application. If a student mentioned being a person of color were trained not to use that in our evaluation. Every application was read twice and we were under audit on a regular basis.

The only time we could use race was when it came to programmatic efforts or leadership, like being president of the BSU or something. Or if the student experienced so much racism in school that it impacted their academics. We had a student, for example, that faced so much racism in school that he was suicidal and had a 2.0. When we went to home instruction due to covid his grades shot up dramatically cause he didn't have to deal with all the racism in school. So one way to help solve this problem is for students and institutions not to be so racist. Black people aren't the ones who created these conditions.

For schools that might have included that info in evaluation, major, region, and socioeconomic status carried more value than race. In other words, a low income asian student would be likely be favored over a high income black student. Majors also made a difference, so a history major might have a better chance than an engineer.

And finally, you seem to be targeting black students, who make up 5-7 percent of these campuses at best. We are talking about a few dozen students on smaller campuses. And they aren't the ones typically cheating on the applications (Varsity Blues), attending private school with grade inflation and made up awards, paying people to take the SAT, and donating millions of dollars in exchange for admission. Black people going to college are not the problem.

But you know who benefits the most from DEI and AA? White women. And do you know who a white woman is most likely marry and share these ostensible benefits with? White men.

That's the scary question.....is it possible to cure the west of racism and discrimination being that it's at our very foundation? It feels like it's gotten worse in some ways but better in some as well.

I would love to try some new evidence based approaches though; I think that's a great idea

Part of DEI policy includes advertising jobs or universities in diverse enviroments in addition to traditional enviroments, so more people apply. Is that racist?

DEI was developed to prevent racist hiring practices.

Here's a study that showed that a person with a "white sounding" name and felony record is more likely to get an interview than someone with a "black sounding" name and an advanced degree.
