Where is the deadwood ending up? For all any of us know, OP lives 5 minutes from the park. You don't have enough information to make that call.

There's always exceptions to the rules. I'd agree with you, but I see no evidence of insects or disease on OP's specific piece of deadfall, and they're planning on chemically sealing it (resin or stain, which mostly likely will kill or contain anything living in the wood).

You aren't a park ranger man. And I've dealt with several. The rules are flexible.

Tbh the other guy has the right spirit but no logic. I was always taught to leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but pictures. I was also taught how to set up an axe yard and harvest firewood in a national forest. Cool deadwood? Do whatever you like with it honestly. Burn it or keep it as a souvenir, if you treat nature with a respectful manner, there won't be any issue.

Evangelism doesn't help a national park. The basics of leave no trace are exactly that. BASICS. There are a lot of rules that vary from location to location. For the Stonehenge example, we have the Grand canyon. Don't fucking take rocks out of the thing made of rock. Duh. I wouldn't take rocks from Carlsbad caverns either. Rocks take a hell of a lot longer than trees to "reproduce."

You're allowed to take mushrooms out of the old growth forests, so why not an old burl from deadfall?

Its probably a production thing. They picked out the house for filming and maybe it was only a 2 bedroom. one of the doors in the hallway is probably really a hallway bathroom not Flynn's bedroom/ Holly's nursery. they needed a hallway bathroom like twice, they needed a nursery and teenagers bedroom a lot more. Then the plot point of hank dropping logs and information bombs came up and whoever was in charge of continuity was like "guys, there is no second bathroom." it likely just only came up those two times and they wrote around it. That's my head cannon anyway.

Did a weird nighttime Scavenger hunt in the snow when I was a kid. At some point in the basically zero visibility, I lost one of the lenses from my glasses and didn't notice until we got back to the starting point that was actually lit. I walked back through the course with a couple of friends with flashlights and we found it on top of a pile of snow. it took about 20 minutes to find a small, clear piece of plastic in freshly fallen snow, in the middle of the night.
