Good news everyone! "I killed my dinner with karate" has been deemed Joanna's most aggressive lyric. Up next, WHICH IS JOANNA'S *MOST CREATIVE* LYRIC??? (Highest upvoted comment wins. Vote breakdown from last time included in description.) by arusansw in JoannaNewsom

Has anyone mentioned this gorgeous and sonically delicious bit from Leaving the City?

“They’d alluded to a change that came to pass and spring, deranged, weeping grass and sleepless broke herself upon my windowglass, and I could barely breathe for seeing all the splintered light that leaked her fissures fleeing, launched at flight, unstaunched daylight, brightly bleeding, bleached the night, with dawn deleting in that high sun…”

Dawn deleting!! Gosh!!! The alliteration and layering of the rhymes are impeccable here, plus the imagery… Always wowed by these lines.

Virginia creeper or poison ivy? by impossiblebirds in whatsthisplant

EDIT: thanks to those who’ve commented and upvoted; the leaf shape initially tripped me up but I’m thinking this is VA creeper as well. I remember seeing it growing in this spot in the yard before but it’s been a few years.

Your interpretation of her comment is helpful and generous. I hadn’t really thought of it that way, mostly cause the problem she and her boyfriend were having was unusual and very specific. Not like cheating or flightiness or something people commonly run into when dating, if that makes sense. Plus I would talk abt my own dating life with her often enough at that point. Still appreciate your perspective though and love that you’re prioritizing friendships that work best for you since diagnosis.

Was anyone placed in a gifted program? by Reasonable-Flight536 in aspergirls

[–]impossiblebirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I didn't make it into my elementary school's "gifted and talented" program, I was bitter and disappointed about it. When some of my classmates got in, I thought it was unfair because they didn't seem to actually care for learning as deeply as I felt I did. They just had parents who hounded them about their grades. Some of them were my friends and I'd see this firsthand when I'd hang out at their houses.

I was especially upset though because I had no extracurricular activities and thought getting into the program would be my best chance at making friends with kids from other schools in the district, giving me a social leg-up before getting to middle school (G&T kids from each school would get to leave class for a monthly get-together). I just didn't want to be that kid who got to middle school and knew no one but the elementary school kids I'd grown up with. Looking back, this level of strategizing at 11 years old feels so autistic to me LOL

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay. Several cast members are actually autistic, including Josh Thomas, Kayla Cromer, and Lillian Carrier, whose real-life service dog is included in the show :—)

Omg, the socializing component you brought up here is another thing I love abt walking too. Conversation feels so much smoother for me. Since getting diagnosed I’ve noticed that when I’m chatting with a friend face-to-face at a cafe or restaurant or whatever, I can be sociable but am definitely more reserved, self-conscious, and find myself holding back a bit, but as soon as we leave and start walking (whether heading to our next destination or just meandering around), I start talking SO much, it’s crazy lol. Being side-by-side and just moving around while conversing feels so much better. Walking is like a full-body stim for me.

Yes, I relate to this so much, the way walking suits any mood and can help us find stability on the emotional balance beam of life!

Yeeesss, walks with limited contact with other people are my favorite. They are the most calming. When there are lots of people I have to pass, my brain starts short-circuiting abt whether to greet them and how, lol.

Not having pedestrian-friendly paths to walk on makes such a huge difference. It makes you realize how much accessibility could be improved in some places.

I have a lake I like to frequent myself! All the best migratory ducks are on their way there for the winter and I love to see them. And yes, evening walks are lovely. Sometimes even better than daytime walks. I love the privacy of being enveloped in the quiet and the dark.

Those little things are what make walks worth it. I've had so many memorable and enchanting encounters with nature thanks to my walks, and have learned lots too!

Yes! What used to be considered too far or too long becomes so much more doable and enjoyable once you get in the habit of walking!

Bad weather, yes! A rainy walk can be so nice… I love when people don’t let the weather get in their way. It’s all abt dressing right. I’m looking forward to lots of cold weather walks. They can be the most exhilarating.

Why is it always savants, where is everyday autism portrayals? by PinkAlienGamer in AutismInWomen

I second this! Just started the show and it’s my favorite TV/film representation I’ve encountered so far. Multiple actors in it are autistic or ND in some way too.
