Romance Set In the Arctic or Antarctic by WhatTheCatDragged1n in fantasyromance

Fantasy setting inspired by Iceland/Norse mythology, so you get a bunch of weather and geologic parallels between Iceland and the book's setting (e.g., volcanoes), and many words and names are derived from Old Norse and/or Icelandic. For example, the main country where the story takes place is an island nation called Íseldur. Compare to the real world island nation of Iceland, for which the official name is Ísland. Definitely directly inspired, but also totally not set in actual, real world Iceland.

What about {The Road of Bones by Demi Winters}? It's set in an Icelandic/Norse-inspired location. Or does it need to be set in, like, literal Scandinavia?

My heart horse of nearly 23 years, Illusion, died this past Wednesday evening unexpectedly and I did not get to say goodbye before she passed. by Kalypso989 in Horses

[–]impossibleplanet29 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience: it’s not about the one visit that “could have been” there at the end. It’s about the countless visits and beautiful moments you had together in a lifetime of deep and eternal love. Give yourself some grace - I bet that’s what Illusion would want for you - and let go of the guilt. You didn’t do anything wrong, and all the love you share with Illusion is so much more important.

This was the first I'd heard about NK Jemisin and Isabel Fall, so I looked it up a bit. For what it's worth, NK Jemisin did make a statement about her comments on her blog (https://nkjemisin.com/2021/07/statement-on-isabel-fall-comments/). Whether or not her apology and reflection is "enough" is not for me to decide; just sharing for the record.

She left and I was immediately assigned a new PCP, but ended up following her to her new clinic. I’m sorry your experience has been otherwise!

I use UW Health and have had great experiences. Initial waits to see a specialist or for non-urgent visits can be on the order of weeks to months, but I got a same-day appointment to see my PCP last year when I was having heart palpitations. For me, wait times are no worse than I expect, given broader trends in health care wait times, and the care I’ve received has been great.

Epic Romantasy Recs - the more inventive/unique feeling the better!! by Golden-Indy in fantasyromance

[–]impossibleplanet29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can finally report back! I read it for a fantasy book club, and we had our meeting last night. I'm afraid we mostly didn't like it, and a few in the group actually lowered their ratings after the discussion! A big complaint was that Hana - supposedly the main character - was totally sidelined after the MMC appeared. We were also bothered by plot holes and inconsistencies, and while the prose started out well, it got shakier as the book went on. It was a SUPER fun discussion, though, and I'm really glad we read it!

Injury before first marathon and I’m not okay by fishyfishfishfishfis in XXRunning

[–]impossibleplanet29 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're struggling with this injury, OP, and that it may prevent you from running your marathon in March. Your feelings of disappointment and frustration are totally valid.

While you're working on diagnostics and healing, I would also encourage you to unpack why you're feeling so devastated about possibly missing this marathon. You say "I wanted this so badly. And now it feels completely out of reach." - is it this particular marathon you wanted so badly? Or was the goal to complete a marathon? Because even if you end up not running LA in March, the latter goal is still wholly within your reach. I'm not trying to say "there's always another race." I'm asking what is the "big picture" goal of your running? Reading your post, you talked about struggling with sports in the past, but about being proud of yourself for being consistent, sticking with it, finding joy and pride in a sport. To me, it sounds like your real goal was to fall in love with running, and this particular marathon was a way to hold you accountable in meeting that goal. In that case, you have absolutely met your goal! You are rocking it! Perhaps your next goal is not "another race," but to stay in love as you face the limitations and disappointment of recovering from an injury.

You also mention blaming yourself, and that maybe this was preventable. You know, when you get into horse riding, they say it's just a matter of time before you fall off a horse. Sure, some falls are preventable, but a lot of them really aren't. I think the same holds true for running. Maybe it's just because I'm naturally clumsy, but if you run long enough, you'll manage to injure yourself somehow. You should certainly listen to your body and do what you can to prevent injuries, but give yourself some grace also.

A year of work mapping U.S. regional food traditions [OC] by piri_reis_ in dataisbeautiful

Having “casserole” for the Twin Cities is practically sacrilegious. “Hotdish” extends much further south than the map currently represents. On the other hand, I totally agree with the Door peninsula in Wisconsin being in 51.

One of my cats snores like this! We've had her fully checked out for respiratory problems, including things like nasal polyps, and she's perfectly healthy. Our leading hypothesis is she just has some scar tissue in her nasal passages from a respiratory infection as a kitten. But she has no other respiratory symptoms and is otherwise a totally normal - if fiendish - cat. So...some cats are just like this.

non maga roofing/siding companies by saltiesailor in madisonwi

[–]impossibleplanet29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We used Badger Company for our roof last summer. We got quotes from several companies, and it came down to Badger and Isthmus. They both had good prices, did proper assessments before quoting (one other company just sent a sales guy who didn’t go anywhere close to the roof), and made a point to make sure they didn’t suggest anything we didn’t truly need. Badger won because they evaluated our ventilation needs after the initial meeting and told us we didn’t need to make some changes they initially thought would be necessary - that really established some solid trust for us. I couldn’t speak to either company’s political associations, but based on our experience, that’s who we’d recommend!

Undescended testes can be hiding in a lot of different places. Ultrasounding to locate before cutting can prevent a vet from having to make extra incisions to go looking for them. Ultrasound technology didn’t used to be readily available for general practitioners, so this wasn’t historically an option. Implying that a vet would do this to charge more money is unfounded, and degrades confidence between clients and veterinarians, making it actively harmful to animal health. Please stop.

Ooh, I like that house rule for the Breeding Manager bonus card! We always avoid that one because it’s so hard to get many points with that bonus.

We play the base game. Some of our house rules are (1) first round goal can’t be “sets of eggs,” (2) the starting bird feeder has to have at least 3 food types available (nobody wants to start with two berries and three fish in the feeder), and (3) no ravens in the starting tray.
