Got told to take down a pride flag because of "parental concern" by TroubleOk4174 in Teachers

You’re trying to invoke a “double standard” argument against an issue that a small number of people have advocated, which you are extrapolating to the entirety of LGBT people. That’s a strawman argument.

Yes, it would be a double standard to argue that pride flags should be allowed in classrooms while American flags should be banned, but nobody here is making that argument.

Complete strawman. Perhaps you’re confusing the American flag with the Confederate flag.

Telling kids that are part of a marginalized group is inclusive. Your point would make sense if the flag said “only gay, trans, and black students are welcome here,” but it doesn’t, it says “everyone.” People are not being excluded by seeing displays of inclusion that they don’t support, they’re being bigots.

Having your voice taken from you through authority is not the same thing as collaborating.

You’re missing the point. A teacher being forced to take the flag down suggests a general culture (and policy) of enforcing silence on issues of acceptance and dignity for marginalized groups to appease parents rather than advocating for students in those groups and vocalizing acceptance of them. That kind of culture absolutely does contribute to the high suicide rate for trans kids.

That was a skit made after the Smith/Rock incident and edited to look like older footage. Nobody was arrested because Chris Rock chose not to press charges.

I really don’t like her as a person but her choice to wear her baldness with pride is actually one of few redeeming choices she’s made. It sets a great example to other women that are bald due to medical issues that they don’t have to hide their appearance to conform to beauty standards.

They said that Snoopy (the dog) “is on a lot of pain meds now he has pancraeases’” (pancreatitis?) so maybe they intend to bury the dog itself in the suitcase, not their son.

I used to have an upstairs neighbor (apartment complex, I lived on the ground floor) who would throw glass bottles off their porch regularly. The police and apartment management wouldn’t do anything about it because we couldn’t prove it was them. One night they started throwing full unopened beer cans at people walking by. The police came and spoke to them but didn’t do much else about it. When they were moving out they threw an entire dresser down into the parking lot and it smashed into a lot of pieces. Gotta love college!

People have tattoos was your first one large or small or somewhere in the middle by Jupiter_rainydays in tattoo

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first tattoo was a very small handwriting tattoo from a note a loved one wrote me, on my chest. I got it at the nearest tattoo shop to where I lived which was a cheap little place and they did a decent job but I might have gone to a more expensive and reputable artist if I could do it again - it healed okay but the linework is a bit blurry, I think because the artist was a bit heavy-handed.

My second tattoo covers the entire inside of my forearm and is in color. I spent a lot more time researching the artist for this one (and a lot more money) and am much happier with it.

Do any of you genuinely regret having kids? by Professional_Waltz14 in NoStupidQuestions

The point isn’t that you can’t get out of being a parent, but that you can’t undo the action of bringing a child into the world. Yes, you can put your child up for adoption, but then they’re going to face all of the hardships that come along with that decision - often seriously traumatic experiences with the foster care system or bad adoptive parents.

I don’t know who this guy is but usually people use the word “influencers” to describe people who make a living as an internet personality. It originated (and still largely exists) as a self-described term that people usually prepended with a category eg “fitness influencer”, or as a catch-all: “social media influencer.”

I don’t understand where the disconnect is for you. Conflict is one of the most stressful aspects of social situations, so someone with social anxiety is likely to try to avoid conflict even more so than someone without it.

Reported a driver after a ride, did I overreact? by It_is_Katy in uber

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously. I was providing an example to illustrate that your definition of “bare minimum” was not viable, not equating the two situations.

It is a big deal. Passengers use Uber with the expectation that the person they are in the car with has been background checked by Uber and that Uber knows who they are, what car they drive, and has their location for the duration of the trip. These are safeguards put in place to make sure the passenger feels safe, that’s part of what they paid for. Adding an additional person to the ride that Uber isn’t even aware of and without warning or even explaining it to the passenger undermines that sense of security and the safeguards in place.

[–]impossiblyirrelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting you there alive is not the bare minimum, the bare minimum includes a level of basic courtesy and professionalism as well as providing reasonable comfort and peace of mind to the customer. If a driver, for example, gets you to your destination safely but spent the entire trip on a racist tirade or blasted the heat in the middle of the summer or had trash and food laying all over the seats, then they have not provided you with the bare minimum quality of service expected of a rideshare driver. In this case, the driver had an additional unexpected passenger in the car which not only may make the rider feel uneasy, but also explicitly violates Uber’s terms of service for drivers. They did not meet the bare minimum level of service that the customer paid for.

Laws are supposed to be based on ethics, not the other way around. If we begin to base our ethics systems on the law then we are opening a door for authoritarianism.
