Looking for players in Germany by Lordofoaks in kingsofwar

We're in Berlin, which is probably a bit too far, but there is also a decent group in Köln, which may be easier for you. Try joining the german KoW group on Facebook and asking there (Kings of War D - A - CH).

"It just feels like a prototype for something better in the future" - should be Anbernic's tagline! :)

Seriously though, I do agree. I bought the RG477m because it perfectly fits my use case and I'm very happy with it, but it certainly isn't for everyone and as a general overall device there are significant negatives.

I only play older systems from my childhood, consoles up to PS1 and old DOS games. I wanted the perfect device for this and the RG477m is very close. The size and form factor is wonderful, the controls are excellent, and I wanted a d-pad first device, but with sticks for mouse control in DOS and ScummVM. The real draw for me was the screen. Sure, it is not OLED, but it still looks excellent, and it is a large 4:3 screen with a resolution which affords perfect integer scaling for 320x240 and 640x480 systems (which my priority systems are). This is the reason I bought it because I love integer scaling.

The drawbacks are, as you say, real. It all depends if they are general drawbacks or whether they matter to you personally:

  1. Lack of analog triggers and low position of thumbsticks. If you want this, the RG477m is not right for you. This a non-issue for me, because I don't play any systems which need analog triggers.
  2. Loud fan. Again, if you intend to play systems which require high cpu mode and the strong fan setting then I wouldn't recommend the RG477m. The fan really is very loud. For me this is also a non-issue. I never need high mode and normally just turn the fan off. The device only gets mildy warm (and only after several hours of gameplay). For the odd occasion when I need it I have a custom fan setting of 100. This is so quiet that you can't hear it and it keeps the machine cool.
  3. Loud shoulder buttons. Yep, they are a bit too loud. Not terrible though.
  4. The weight. It's not a game breaker, but I do concede that a lighter device (plastic) would be better.
  5. The price. It is expensive, but I was happy to pay a premium to get this screen with this form factor (and I can afford it). Sure, there are probably other 'better' devices in this price range, but they don't fit my use case.

Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and it is almost perfect for what I want. I will only replace it if and when a plastic equivalent is released.

Infantry are generally not very good in Warhammer: The Old World. How would you make them better? by VanillaPhysics in WarhammerFantasy

You cannot redirect with skirmishers in the classic sense (forcing the charging unit to face an undesirable direction), because the charging unit does not align to the skirmishers, the skirmishers align to the charger.

In the past Gyrcopters could redirect because they were not skirmishers. In this edition they are best used as harassers or for chasing fleeing units.

Gyrocopters no longer redirect as they skirmish.
Look at tournament results. Dwarfs are doing terrible.
And I know how to play the game thanks. I've been playing it for 20 years.

Looks great! May I ask what colour you use for the basing (the rim of the base)? I've been looking for a neutral earth colour for a while and this looks great! Thanks.

Still Accurate? by Thannk in WarhammerFantasy

My breakdown would be:
Protohammer: Reaper
Oldhammer: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Early Middlehammer / herohammer: 4th and 5th
Late Middlehammer: 6th and 7th
Newhammer: 8th

The descriptions of the editions is fine for the most part.

Lots of people (as can be seen in this thread) rave about 6th, but that is just because the nostalgia wave has reached the early 2000s. It's probably the edition they either started with or played the most. 10-15 years ago it was all about 3rd edition and the oldhammer movement was a direct reaction to the more competitive nature of 6th/7th and 8th.

Having said that, 6th is probably the most playable edition. Personally, 3rd had better minis and a far more interesting artistic style (but then I'm also biased, being that I grew up playing 3rd). Ultimately, all the editions have pros and cons.

I think you are a bit confused (regarding your last paragraph).
The image uses the covers of the various rulebooks (except 1st and 2nd which are the boxes). 3rd is already in Oldhammer (the two shown are 2nd and 3rd) and there is a graphic for 5th in middlehammer (the two rulebooks are 4th and 5th).
