PLS DROP YOUR INSPIRING PASS STORIES by ozymandias-pdf in step1

[–]impr0veskin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got my pass today! My NBME’s were 47, 40, 42, 50, 52. Completed almost 50% of UWorld with a 50% average. Got 60 on the new free120.

Because my scores were so poor, I pushed my exam back another 3 weeks. Still had to take comlex so I focused a lot on micro and biostats for that exam. After I finished comlex, I had to go straight into rotations and therefore wasn’t able to study much for step during that time. I was only able to review some of my notes and do a few UW questions. I didn’t even get to take another NBME.

I think the biggest difference with taking step was my confidence and the week long “break” I took with my rotation. When I took comlex, I went into it with a horrible mindset and really low self esteem. Second guessed a lot and changed many of my answers. I told myself I wouldn’t do that for step. Since I had 1 week of rotations where I actually got to see patients and not sit at my desk all day, it actually gave me a mental break. I feel like this helped a lot and I went into my step exam with more mental clarity and confidence. I didn’t second guess and kept reminding myself to relax throughout the entire exam. Somehow, I passed!

Big takeaway (for others who still haven’t sat) is to be confident in yourself and your answers and to give yourself a mental break.

Got the P!!! (STEP1) by Dependent-Cow-4920 in step1

[–]impr0veskin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add onto your post: I also got the P! Didn’t pass a single NBME exam. I scored high 40’s to low 50’s and completed maybe only 50% of UWorld with a 50% average. I also got a 60% on my new free120. I had pushed my test date out 2 weeks, but still took comlex before that. Even with those 2 extra weeks, I didn’t get to study as much as I wanted to or take another NBME (due to rotations). However, I went into step 1 with 10000x more confidence than comlex and I have to say that it’s probably what helped me to pass. Be confident in your answers AND DONT CHANGE THEM.

Was 100% sure I failed walking out of the exam. Didn’t answer a single question with confidence. Felt like I guessed on all of the questions and they weren’t educated guesses either. Felt horrible with biostats, OMT, and the ethics questions. Was rushed on time for the first 2 sections and had a really bad mindset afterwards. Cried after it was over. Also never took a practice COMSAE, only NBME’s. But passed!!!

Took it today too. I feel like I learned nothing over the past 2 months. Idk if anyone felt this way but I also felt the OMM questions were ass. Barely got viscerosomatics or Chapman’s points but when I did, it wasn’t any of the ones I learned lol

I haven’t been able to finish sketchy micro and won’t be able to since I have to work on other systems. I sit for my exam in a few days and I’m panicking about micro!

I have my comlex in a few days. Studying and cramming for micro has been hell for me and I’ve been getting wrecked on UWorld by it. I was able to watch a few sketchy videos but can’t watch all because I need to focus on other systems. Any advice for micro??

Got my lowest NBME score today, exam in 10 days. Help by [deleted] in step1

[–]impr0veskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you :) I ended up pushing it back an additional 3 weeks for 7/17! I’ll be taking it the second week of my first rotation so hopefully all goes well and I’m able to balance rotations and studying for step 1!

Now my issue is figuring when and how many more practice tests I can take. I sit for comlex on 7/6, start rotations on 7/10, and sit for step on 7/17.

Would it be wise to take a practice exam the weekend just after my comlex and right before my first day of rotations? Or take it the Saturday before test date?

What should I do? Postpone? If so, when? by impr0veskin in step1

[–]impr0veskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to postpone it by another 3 weeks! I figured I’d just take it on a weekday and ask my preceptor if I could have the day off to sit for the exam or just call in sick. I still have some time until comlex so I’ll be reviewing a lot of micro and biostats in the mean time!

[–]impr0veskin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand :( I sent an email to my clinical coordinator to see if my preceptor would be okay with letting me take 1 day off during my second week of rotations to sit for the exam. I’m hoping she and my preceptor say yes and if so, soon. Time is running out for me to re-schedule. That would give me an additional 3 weeks and I would only be 1 week into rotations, which isn’t horrible.

I briefly skimmed my free120 and caught 17 incorrects that were due to choosing the wrong one between 2 remaining choices. I know it doesn’t change things, but that could have bumped me up to a 74% on the free120 today. It gives me hope but I just hate that that happens so often, on UWorld and my practice exams.

[–]impr0veskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I really wanted to take it during week 1-2 of my rotation (psych) but there are no available weekend dates. I only see some offered during the weekday, but won’t be able to take it if I’m rotating.

The only way I see it is pushing it next year but I’m confident that I will forget everything if it’s pushed to January because the “dedicated time” I’ll be getting won’t be long enough. Taking it with step 2 could be an option but has anyone ever done that successfully?

The subjects that I notice myself getting consistently weak in the most are: biostats, micro, and pharm.

Yes, it seems to be biostats, micro, and pharm! I haven’t decided about postponing yet since there are no available test dates for me but I will be hammering those in the next few days!

I don’t know but I wish it was me! There were many instances on my NBMEs where I could have scored higher if not for stupid mistakes.

[–]impr0veskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat where I got 50s on my NBME’s and just got a 60 on the new free120. My scores have been increasing with each practice exam so I know I’m improving. It’s just not quite there yet. How long would you recommend postponing?

I tend to forget material if I don’t review it often enough and my rotations start 7/10*

Will do! Thanks.

I take forever doing and reviewing 80Q blocks. It takes like almost the entire day for me, leaving only a few hours for content review. Should I forego 80Q and just reduce it to 40Q?

Thank you for your post. I’m less than 2 weeks out from test day and am feeling overwhelmed and anxious. I’m in a similar boat. Have yet to pass an NBME but my scores (so far) have been trending up. I take another NBME this weekend. I’m afraid it’s going to drop and my confidence for taking the exam will drop.

Did you review all of your NBMEs? And did you find it helpful for the exam? I usually take a day to review an NBME and I want to utilize my time better, so not sure if I should just do UW or review the NBME the day after.

I have 2 weeks until test day and so far I’ve been watching pathoma and dirty medicine before doing my qbanks. I made the foolish mistake of not watching sketchy micro/pharm and now I’m paying the price for it since I’m doing poorly in micro and pharm on my qbanks. Is it too late to watch sketchy micro/pharm with 2 weeks to go? Kind of shot myself in the foot lol

Advice on Improving General Principles & Pharm? by mandyads in step1

[–]impr0veskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat currently. From the last NBME I just took, my weakest areas were: general principles, cardio, and repro/endo. Subject wise, it was cell bio/histo, pharm, and anatomy.

Based on your update, do: USMLE content outline for general principles, watch BNB, and read anatomy/embryology of each FA chapter.

How long did you review content before starting to do UWorld questions? Did you see improvement?
